Happy 5th Birthday, Doki!

Another year passes by… Now we’re 5 years old! It’s quite a feat really, considering how many groups I have seen form and disappear during these past 5 years. You could probably count on one hand the number of groups older than us and still actively releasing stuff regularly.

Personally, I am quite busy with my PhD (1 more year to go), so I don’t have much time to do stuff on here anymore. So a big thanks must be given to the Project Leaders of Doki, who keep the releases coming.

Despite efforts to consign us to history by certain people in the fansub scene, you guys haven’t forgotten about us, and your support keeps us going day after day.

So a big thanks to all you fans out there! May this coming year be as successful and fruitful as the past five!

PS: Pic related.

Seedboxes!

Sadly, donations are no longer steady enough to be relied on. (It’s not fair on iMdai to keep bankrolling us!) Because of this, I have been thinking about alternative methods of providing a steady stream of income for Doki’s operations.
One such method could be to sell seedboxes. I have received some positive feedback from this idea, so I will proceed with it, and see how it goes.

For a limited time (a week or two), I will provide free seedboxes for people to try out and test. These seedboxes are on a 100Mbps connection and have unlimited monthly bandwith. If you are interested in buying a seedbox from us in the future to support us, here’s a good opportunity to test them out for free!

Eventually, I will charge something reasonable, such as $10 a month for 200 GB, for example. But I’ll think about that later.

You can use the seedbox to download/seed anything you like, anime/BakaBT or otherwise. Obviously, the only rule is no CP of any kind.

Regarding the price that I will charge in the future: despite being cheap, I know that it’s probably not the cheapest out there. You can probably find cheaper seedbox providers. However, bear in mind that it’s not my goal to provide the cheapest seedboxes possible. I want the people who support Doki to get something back in return.

There are also benefits to getting a seedbox from us (aside from helping us out)! If you want to help us seed a show, or just want a Doki show for yourself, you can request for that show to be transferred directly into your seedbox from one of the Doki servers. I may think of other perks in the future. Also, I am here to provide support, answer any questions, which probably beats support from seedbox providers from elsewhere!

For those people who have no idea how to use a seedbox, I have written a detailed tutorial which will help them.

To get a free seedbox, all you have to do is send me an email ([email protected]) and I will set it up for you ASAP. I only have around 12 right now, so if this gets more popular than I expect, you’ll have to wait a day or so before I can get more.

Feedback on the seedboxes are welcome!

Update: 30+ seedboxes have been given out! There’s a bit of a waiting list, but keep the requests coming!

Donations

Paypal finally banned my account, lol. It was going to happen eventually, so I can’t really complain.

From now on, I’ll handle donations in a more roundabout way. You’ll have to send me an email if you want to donate, and I’ll send you the details.

Update from the VN Dept

Small update from the VN Department.

Rokudaime does not have time to continue in his position as PR for the VN Dept. We’d like to thank him for the good work he’s done up til now.

If you have any questions related to VNs, please go to here or drop me an email at [email protected] or catch me on IRC and I’ll direct you to someone.

Banner Competition: Winter 2013 (With a prize!)

Banner Competition: Winter 2013 (With a prize!)

Edit: And we have an overall winner! This was decided by staff votes. The winner gets a free mousemat!

The banner competition will end when there are sufficient submissions.
The number of banners I pick will be proportional to the number of submitted entries.
Submit by replying to this post, 1 link to a banner per reply.

And here are the technical criteria for the banners submitted to be used on the blog:

  • 1240px x 250px
  • .jpg or .png (preferred)
  • Filesize should be reasonable.

For banners submitted to be used on the Facebook group:

  • 851px x 315px
  • JPEG (.jpg) with an sRGB colour profile.
  • Filesize should be 100 KB to 150 KB.

And here are the criteria for characters/shows:

  • Character(s) should be female. (Or at least include a female.)
  • Banner must be SFW. No nudity/genitalia/hentai/etc.
  • Character(s) should come from a show that Doki has done/is doing/plans to do.
  • The banner should include the words “Doki Fansubs” somewhere on it.

Just some advice, the best banners not only have good design, but the logo “Doki Fansubs” also “fits” the banner, ie, it doesn’t stand out.

You may also modify and submit your banner for our facebook page. Or specifically make one for it. Please observe the FB rules.

The best 2 designs (picked by staff vote, 1 for doki.co, 1 for FB) will receive a free mousemat of their choice from my remaining mousemat stock.

Good luck.

Clarification regarding Clannad_Man and his Kickstarter Campaign

A while ago, Clannad_Man started a Kickstarter campaign with the goal of making a Key-related documentary.  Read the 2 links below for the full story.

Here and here

To sum it up, people became suspicious of the Kickstarter campaign when Clannad_Man had achieved almost 50% of his monetary goal. Someone went and posted on the President of Key/Visual Art’s Twitter, asking his opinion, and at that point, Clannad_Man suspended the Kickstarter campaign.

Upon closer inspection, their suspicions were not unfounded. We did not take a good look at his campaign at the time.  We should have, especially as he was throwing our name around with it.  We decided to start an internal investigation to clear up what happened. Here are some of our conclusions:

  • It is against the ToS of KS to offer the rewards that were being offered, rewards must come from the project itself.
  • Clannad_Man needs to provide more details about the budget and itinerary of the trip to prove it’s not a scam, even if they are preliminary.
  • The way the project sold itself, there was definitely potential for people to misunderstand that key endorsed this work, when they did not.
  • The company that Clannad_Man was going to use has not yet been formed, was going to be incorporated by him, and would have employed 2 professional videographers.  Clannad_Man notes the company itself would not take any money, and they would be passed through the professional videographers.  The omission of this information is unacceptable, no matter what the intentions were.

We also don’t want to take credit for, or have anyone else take credit for work people have done.  We believe that ‘lead three projects’  is a significant misrepresentation of what he worked on.  This has affected both him and us.

Clannad_Man in his time with Doki has done some good work with us.  That, however, does not excuse any of the issues at hand.

We want to clarify what Clannad_Man worked on at Doki.

  • Tomoyo After – Clannad_Man organized and ran the team that constituted Doki’s contribution to the project.  (This project was picked up from Baka-Tsuki.)
  • Clannad – Clannad_Man and the Doki team worked with Polarem on Clannad for about two months prior to him retiring.  Polarem is also retired at this point.  The project is right now in my hands.  (This project was picked up from Baka-Tsuki)
  • Little Busters – Clannad_Man helped set up and plan our collaboration, and was the liaison between Doki and Fluffy.  I had taken over the VN department by the time it was finalized, though he continued to act as a liaison.

Clannad_Man retired from active Doki operations about a year ago now.

This kickstarter initiative was Clannad_Man’s, not Doki’s.  We did not review his kickstarter before it was posted.  After it was posted, we should have clarified sooner what exactly Clannad_Man worked on at Doki so there would be no misunderstandings.  Our failure to do so is on us.  We allowed him to use our name, and allowed him to tarnish the names of others with it.  We should have investigated sooner.  We will not tolerate our name being used in this manner again.

With that said:

    • For LB, we continue to collaborate with Fluffy, providing translation support.  Phlebas and Rive were and continue to be our main points of contact with Fluffy.
    • For Clannad, we want to make sure we still have permission to build upon the work done by Velocity7, Baka-Tsuki and the other major contributors.  If not, we will turn our changes over back to BT, and they can resume the project from there.  We will then decide if we want to proceed from scratch or not.
    • For Clannad, after a discussion with Velocity7, we will continue our work on the Baka-Tsuki base.

Finally, I’ve attached IRC chat logs below where you can find the contents of our internal investigation.  As the current head of Doki’s VN department, I spoke with Clannad_Man directly to figure out what was going on.  To be honest, I’m not sure what to believe myself at this time.  Either way, the misrepresentations are unacceptable.  You are free to draw your own conclusions from what was said.

Investigation chat log

Edit: To be absolutely clear on the VN projects: Doki has not released a patch for Little Busters or Clannad, and thus should not be credited for those releases until we do.

Also, investigation chat log link replaced. only changes were made for readability: removed timestamps and was spell checked.

Happy 4th Birthday, Doki!

So 4 years have already passed since I started Doki… How time flies!

I would usually go on about how many shows/episodes we’ve done, how many files we’ve released, but that’s old now. If you want to see you could always go to AniDB 😛

I originally planned to do something for this year, but due to :reasons: I haven’t managed to. Never fear, Hanabi promises to do something exciting next year 😛 Let’s just pretend that yesterday’s Pokemon release was intended for today 🙂

I have almost completed the first year of my PhD, with two more years to go, so I don’t have much time to do much fansubbing anymore. But I am releasing the weekly airing shows this season and I also plan to finish Lucky Star before the end of the year, so let’s pray that the stars align!

As usual, a big thanks to all of you who donate to keep madoka going every month. The mousemat sales also went great. There should be enough funds to keep doki.co renewed for the next few decades and keep kotomi and yui going for 2 years! There are still a number of mousemats left in stock, so it’s not too late to grab one. The next time I get new stocks might be summer 2014.

A big shoutout to the active staff who keep Doki running, and thanks to all you guys out there for your support. May our success continue!
