Summer 2013 VN Division Update : TA Mac/Linux V1.1, Sasami Route Complete

Clannad - Little Busters! Crossover
Greetings Doki Legion and members of the worldwide Key Kazoku! Clannad Man here to provide you with a long overdue Visual Novel Division update!

So what’s been going on these past several months? Quite a few things, actually. Around the beginning of Summer, the Team began transitioning our content over to Github. Reorganizing the translation repositories has taken some time but will ultimately streamline how work on the games is conducted. However… I bet you didn’t start reading this article for news like this, did you? Of course not. Onto the games!

Let’s start with the big news. After months of fumbling around attempting to create updated Tomoyo After patches for Mac and Linux, the VN Team has finally been able to do so. Sometime over the next few days, an open-beta period for the v1.1 patches will begin. While it is believed the patch should work correctly for everything outside of unsupported OP video (including the Dungeons & Takafumis minigame), the VN Division would like to clarify that this is the case. To Mac & Linux users, enjoy!

A lot of progress has been made on the technical side for the Tomoyo After’s Memorial Edition. Scripts have been extracted and matched up with the original, leaving only the changes between editions untranslated.  While the VN Division is splitting its efforts between Clannad and Little Busters!, the remaining work that needs to be done on the game is relatively straightforward. If any able bodied translators were to volunteer to assist, work on the translation could probably continue in short order… *hint* *hint*.

On to Little Busters! EX/ME: Translation and editing continues with Sasami’s route having been completed and edited. It is currently going through internal testing for quality assurance; perhaps there will be a partial patch release to reflect its completion.  Kanata route has a few untranslated pieces on common route, putting that one’s release a bit further along the line.  The focus right now is on Saya’s Route and additions to the Common Route. Feel free to follow the VN Team’s progress HERE.

In addition to the lengthy transition that has taken place with Fluffy’s merger into Doki VN, translation progress has been slowed by the stepping down of Claymore_Smiley and the leave of absence taken by dango. The Team is actively looking for additional members to fill in for their vacancies. Again, if there are any capable Japanese to English translators who would be interested in assisting the completion of Little Busters! EX/ME or any of our other VN Translation Projects, please mention your interest in the comments section or on the #doki-recruits channel on IRC.

On the plus side, Kuzu will be transitioning back over to Doki VN at the end of the season to focus on Clannad’s translation checks with NeWbY. Several of the VN Division’s editors have been reviewing the game’s SEENs and will continue working with the game’s translators into the foreseeable future.

So that’s that. Updates all around for everyone. Oh, and the Key15th Project is still underway for you Key fans. We’ll get you all updated on that soon enough. Until next time, ciao!

Can we get a link to the Github repo(s)?

    • I’d need to check with everyone else. Most of the staff likes to keep information private, even if there’s no real harm in releasing it. Therefore, I’ll say: Probably. Hang tight!

    • Delwack

The repos are private right now, but we can potentially make them public. I think we’ll probably want to talk it over internally first, but if that’s what people want to see I don’t really think there’s any harm in it.

  • Nier

    Hi,

Thank you for the update, so when do you think we will get the complete patch of Tomyo After Memorial Edition? 2014? 2015? Also why do you guys call it “CS”, that’s the name for it on the consoles.

Also will the patch for Little Busters work with the Perfect Edition?

    • Rokudaime

      Hi Nier,

It’s hard to give an estimate for TA ME, since it depends heavily on whether or not we get someone to start working on translating it now, or if we don’t, and have to wait until after we’re done with LB and Clannad (since that’s mainly what team is working on now).

And we call the CS Edition of TA that because that’s what it’s called. :-/ Not sure if I understand your question. “CS” stands for “Consumer Safe”. The ME and CS Editions of the game are pretty much the same, but the CS Edition is the PS2 and PSP console version, while the ME Edition is for PC. For a more detailed explanation, I’ll refer to an earlier post from Clannad Man:

“The PC version comes in several types: The original LE, ME, and CE Editions. The original limited edition has H-Scenes and is a fair amount shorter than the later versions. Both the Memorial and Consumer Safe Editions are very similar outside of the way the files are compiled, do not have H-Scenes, have full voice acting with Tomoya Okazaki, and are longer than the original. Technically the CE version is more advanced due to graphical capabilities, though gameplay is not effected.

The PS2 port of the game had the H-Scenes removed, added in the additional storyline, and reduced in-game flickering, but did not include other improvements. The PSP version is the first port of the CE Edition is is virtually identical to the PC version. The Xbox 360 version is a CE port with improved graphics options (improved light and shading effects can be toggled) and resolution. Naturally, achievements were also included in this version. The PS3 version was a limited edition release commemorating Visual Art’s 20th Anniversary; outside of controls and achievements, it is the same as the Xbox 360 version.”

As for LB PE, yes we plan on making a working version of the patch for that as well, but it will be the very last thing we do. So, not until after we’re done with the EX/ME Editions at least.

      • Nier

“And we call the CS Edition of TA that because that’s what it’s called. :-/”

Yes on consoles but not on PC, you guys are releasing a patch for the PC, it would only confuse people looking to buy the game otherwise aimlessly sending them on a wild goose chase to look for the non-existent “CS Edition” (since there is no “CS” version on PC, the two all-ages versions released on PC are the Memorial Box version and the Memorial Edition version).

CS Edition is the name used for the Playstation 2, PSP, Xbox 360 etc. But not on PC.

        • Rokudaime

Fair enough. I don’t think it’s going to confuse many people though. Well, I blame Clannad Man anyway, since he’s the one who called it that! 😛

        • I see what the issue is. First off, I had a brief mental lapse when I wrote up the post. For some time there was talk about adding achievements and potentially other console features to the patch. However, those plans were scrapped. (It was hard enough getting Dungeons and Takafumis to work correctly, lol!) Since it had been awhile since I posted an update, I may have subconsciously wrote ‘CS’ while considering all the updates that had occurred recently. I removed the CS reference in the post. Good catch!

CE was an unofficial term I used awhile back to loosely refer to each of the releases with full voice enabled outside of the Memorial Box release, which was rare and had a different file configuration than the consumer edition release, hence the ‘CE’. It isn’t an official term, just my own way of organizing the editions in my mind. If I recall correctly, the quote taken from Roku was a casual response to a prior post where the distinction between the versions could be considered beneficial.

So yeah, I apologize for the confusion. Mea culpa.

      • Cyrec

Any chance of TA:ME in next 2-4 months?

        • If and only if another quality translator joins Doki VN with the sole purpose of working on Tomoyo After, the Memorial Edition could potentially be translated by the end of the year. However, each day that passes without that dedicated TL, the less likely that is to happen. At the moment, Clannad and Little Busters have joint priority over TA:ME.

    • Dang it Roku! I was just going to answer this question!

  • Rawr

Good job Clannad Man and Rokudaime. Keep up the good work 🙂

Lol, won’t ever play the VNs, but even so, your posts are pretty informative.

  • “Transitioning” makes it sounds like I will be going through puberty again.

  • rain

How does one go about getting the game for Mac/Linux? There isn’t an official retail release that I am aware of.

    • Rokudaime

You use the Windows version of the game. The Mac/Linux patch takes care of the rest, assuming we’ve managed to get it to work correctly now…

  • Réboy

Awesome! Does that mean Tomoyo ME isn’t so far away now?

    • Rokudaime

Like both Clannad Man and I have already said above, it depends heavily on whether or not we get someone to volunteer to start working on translating it now or not. If we don’t, then it’ll have to wait until after we’re done with LB and Clannad, since that’s mainly what the team is working on right now. For the time being, Clannad and LB EX/ME takes priority over TA ME.

      • Réboy

I don’t understand why? Isn’t finishing the extra stuff in TA ME less work than finishing the entire LB EX game?

        • Delwack

It isn’t quite that easy; people continuing the TL (if we want to do it well) really need to understand the context of what they are TLing.

This means we either have to spend quite of bit of time to bring someone new up to speed, or they have to have worked on it before.

Even if they have worked on it before, it’s been a while, so they’ll need to refresh their memory on some of the details and intricacies of the story.

If I can arrange for it to happen in-between other routes and work, I will. I’m not going to pull people who are immersed in on another game in another route off to just spit it out unless they are confident they remeber TA well enough to handle the new scenes.

    • Delwack

I’m going to try to find someone to sneak in the rest of the TA translation if I can find some time from a few people somewhere. There’s still some technical work that needs to be done, and the whole testing and checking thing, but the bulk of it is complete now.

If I do, it’ll be a nice surprise, but I wouldn’t put your hopes in anything soon.

  • Zoom

Will you be adding back in the scenes that were taken out of the original characters routes in LB:EX and translating them? *crosses fingers*

    • Rokudaime

You mean scenes from the regular edition and/or ME edition that are different from the scenes in the EX edition? I’m not entirely sure, but I think the answer is no, since you can’t have the H-scenes and the replacement scenes at the same time, no? I don’t see how that would work. You’re probably gonna have to play both versions if you want to see absolutely everything. I might ask Phlebas about this and get back to you though.

    • Zoom

No, I meant the EX-only scenes that are not in your current patch. (from all the various routes)

      • Delwack

The goal is for the ME and EX editions to have all the scenes/cg in their respective editions. The modifications made are were meant to make the ME and EX editions work with (and reflect the content in) the regular LB patch, since that is all that was finished at the time.

      • Rokudaime

Oh, that’s what you meant. 😛 Yes of course, those will be there when we finally release a proper EX patch. The current EX patch isn’t really an EX patch, it just allows you to play the regular version of the game (or close to it) on an EX copy of the game. Refer to what Delwack said.

  • TheSeaAndCake

Keep up the great work guys. Clannad is the only visual novel I have ever played and I hope to play it fully translated one day. So that I can revisit all the great memories I have of playing it.

  • anon-kun

So, there was a ton of info about Little Busters EX in the post, but approximately how far have you gotten with the Clannad project?

It’s great to see progress being made though, it’s been quite a while since the last update.

    • Rokudaime

Clannad Man covered Clannad in his post as well:

“On the plus side, Kuzu will be transitioning back over to Doki VN at the end of the season to focus on Clannad’s translation checks with NeWbY. Several of the VN Division’s editors have been reviewing the game’s SEENs and will continue working with the game’s translators into the foreseeable future.”

      • anon-kun

True, but I was interested in some more detailed info. I mean, they posted a tracker for Little Busters for example.

        • Right now the common route is being worked on. NeWbY has been taking charge of that with BilliumMoto doing some editing.

The LB! tracker was carried over from when Fluffy used it. The VN Division has generally preferred not to give specific details about progress so that expectations for short-term releases never get too high; however, those opinions may be changing. Perhaps a tracker will be posted sometime in the future.

  • Nier

    Hi again,

Since this all about Key, I have been thinking of picking up the Memorial Edition of Planetarian, problem is the sole english patch in existence does not work with this version, anyone ever thought of making an english patch that works with the Memorial Edition?

And yes, I know that Key officially released an english version of Planetarian for Ipad and the likes, though I have no Ipad or Ipod or whatever.

    • Rokudaime

I very much doubt we’ll ever be doing that, especially since, as far as I know, there isn’t much difference between the regular version of Planetarian and the ME edition, outside of maybe the engine. I think? Clannad Man, can you confirm or deconfirm this? Anyway, even if we considered it, that would be waaaaay into the future. We can’t really think about it when we’re already working on Clannad, Tomoyo After, AND Little Busters!. We have more than enough on our plate as it is, and I also suspect that many in the team would want a good long break once we’re done with the final patches for all three games. Anyway, try asking again in the future once we’re done with those games I guess? :-/

  • shin

Hi there I don’t know how to extract the torrent file of tomoyo after english patch and I’m not really a computer guy other than being able to surf the net and thats pretty much it. I just got into Eroge/ Visual novel about a few days ago and since I heard from my brother that IRC or MIRC I think thats correct, is kinda complicated I thought that doing torrent would be a bit easier instead but I never touch torrent before. I was hoping someone here with patience wouldn’t mind helping me since I’m a slow learner. I did ask my brother to do it since he’s a computer guy and he knows how to touch these sorta things but he is being a you-know-what right now. Sorry to drag this on but any help will be appreciated and I’m kinda scare about torrent being in my laptop and all but if I get to play tomoyo after I’ll be satisfied!

    • Rokudaime

      Hi there shin,

I’ll do my best to help and explain in detail, step-by-step. Bear with me, and let me know if you don’t understand, or you are unable to download the patch. You don’t really need to understand how everything works so long as you are able to download the patch, but since you seem uneasy about using torrents, I’ll include just a tiny bit of explanation about what they are as well, and how they work.

You don’t extract anything with torrents, you just use a torrent program (I personally recommend utorrent: http://www.utorrent.com/ ,which is free, easy to use, widely supported, and very stable) to download the torrent files (in this case the Tomoyo After English patch). It is a filesharing program, so you are downloading the patch from us other users, and they are downloading it from you and everyone else downloading or sharing the patch as well.

All you need to do is install utorrent, and then click on the torrent file link for the Tomoyo After English patch at the bottom of this post: http://doki.co/2013/03/24/tomoyo-after-english-patch-v1-1/ , which will start the download of the file in your utorrent program (utorrent will ask you to confirm, and ask you to select which Windows folder you want to download the file to). In your utorrent window, in the “Info” tab (which is selected by default), you should see the file downloading, showing you in percentages how far along it is to being done. Once it is finished, it will switch from saying “Downloading” to saying “Seeding”. This just means that you are finished downloading, and are now uploading/sharing the file to/with other people who are downloading the patch. At this point, right-click on the torrent in the window, and in the menu that pops up, click “Stop”. It should now switch from saying “Seeding” to saying “Finished”. Then right-click on it again, bringing up the pop-up menu again, and highlight “Remove And”, and then click “Delete .torrent”. This deletes the torrent, but not the file (the TA English patch) you downloaded, and finishes the process. At this point just go to the folder where you selected to download the patch to, and the installer should be there, waiting for you. : )

Also, you don’t need to be scared of using torrents or having a torrent file on your computer. The same rules apply to downloading using a torrent program as when downloading things normally: The program is safe, and you can download anything with it safely, but you just need to avoid scetchy and questionable files on the internet. In this case, the file in question is just our English patch for Tomoyo After, provided by us, so you have absolutely nothing to worry about. : ) As for the TA patch itself, you simply move the patch installer to the folder where you installed the game, boot it up (the patch installer, not the game), and then install it in the same folder. Done. : ) Let me know if you encounter problems, or need more detailed help.

      • shin

Hey thanks! I will be following that instruction later tonight since I’m asleep during the day. And again thank you for your time! Much Appreciated!

  • karikari

Please finish LBEX quickly! The anime for EX has been green-lit, and if possible I want to enjoy the VN before the adaptation!

    • Journey

Might have to be otherway around, it would seem that it is still rather far away due to Saya’s route as well as all the editing/proofreading needed.

  • Unknown Schean

ehm this is might weird question but i am wondering, is there any patch (or will be made) for tomoyo after the original that remove ehm part(S) of (mozaik or blur) ?…

oh yeah 1 more question what is different between clannad full voice with Clannad ME, is there any extent story or there’s voice for Tomoya

thank you for the translator(s) that i really admire

    • Rokudaime

In response to your first question:
I’m not aware of any uncensoring patches for Tomoyo After, but I suppose one might exist out there on the internet (an unofficial one, obviously)…I couldn’t tell you where though…

In response to your second question:
There isn’t really any difference between the Full-Voice and Memorial Edition versions of Clannad content-wise, at least as far as I know…

  • JbstormburstADV

    Hello, Doki VN Team!

I figured that I might as well drop on by and check up on progress, since I am eager for the CLANNAD patch release. So, since we are waiting on the TA:ME patch to release, is there an idea as to when the project will be complete? Anyways thanks for the work going into this, and I’ll be waiting.

    Per Laborem ad Astra,
    JbstormburstADV

    • Hi there JbstormburstADV! Always a pleasure to chat with you.

Since the VN Division has not yet added an additional TL to the teams, progress on TA:ME will continue to be delayed in lieu of Clannad’s TLC and Little Busters’ translation. Few people applied in the last recruitment run, and we did not feel comfortable bringing the applicants on board that did apply. Therefore, if you know of any dedicated, skilled TLs who would be interested in working on any one of our three VN projects, we’d be happy to talk with them and potentially give them a shot.

  • Unknown Schean

hmm i wanted try to learn hack and translate the visual novel too actually, what kind application i should download?

    • Hi there! If you visit #doki-recruits on IRC, mention that you’re interesting in helping to translate the visual novel. From there you will be provided with a test, currently set at 100 lines from the visual novel. You’ll be given a certain number of days to complete it. Once it is returned, it will be graded and a final decision will be made regarding your candidacy.

We very much encourage those proficient in Japanese to give the test a shot. These VNs are being translated by fans for fans, so if you think you might be able to help out, consider giving it a shot! (The worst the grader could say is ‘no’!)

      • Unknown Schean

hi clannad man. i might wanted join and help translate VN, but first i need to training myself first to get used using its device, then i will apply to recruitment :D. must be fun if i could give contribute to VN that i loved.
i have question is it hard and need time to re-coding VN while translating 1 line?

  • Kirashi

    I support you.

France is waiting for this patch impatiently.

Good luck for your work, you’re kind and awesome!

  • Darkau

I was wondering, do you need only translator? Do you need help for editing too?

    • Rokudaime

If you want to contribute, feel free to drop by #doki-recruits on IRC, and ask around if there is anything you can help with (and tell us what you want to do). The staff will look into it and consider it. You will probably be tested though.

      • Unknown Schean

hmm ok, then time for me focus on training using device,
and I forgot to celebrate on 14 September is Tomoyo birthday, well its kind late but happy birthday Tomoyo Sakagami (智代坂上)

  • Saya Sakamoto

So… have you guys decided whether you’ll do individual patches or wait for all three routes to be finished? How long do you think it might, possibly, theoretically, take?

So pumped for the Saya route, by the way! 😀

    • Rokudaime

Which game are you talking about now (remember, this thread is about both Clannad, TA, AND LB)? Little Busters? The team might decide otherwise when the time arrives, if they feel like it, but I’m gonna go ahead and and say that most likely, we’ll release a complete patch after everything is done, rather than do individual route patches.

  • DreamRar

can i ask question about clannad according to the vndb http://vndb.org/r27053 clannad PS3 version have full voice including player so my question is can you port the voice file from ps3 to pc?

    Thanks!!

  • Saya Sakamoto

    This is hypothetical.
$5000 if the basic translation and proofreading of all three of LB EX’s routes is done in three months. Could it be done?

    • Rokudaime

With the way things stand right now, it could, yes. It could be done without the money as well though. 😛 Of course, there’s no guarantee it will happen.

      • Rawr

Any idea if Clannad Man is coming back Roku, or are you taking over his post making duties on here? The drama from before has died down entirely on here lol

        • Rokudaime

Depends on what you mean by coming back. He still has access to the IRC channels, and is still around. I had a pleasant conversation with him not that long ago. And the one to take over CM’s duties is Delwack, and he did that a long time ago, lol. 😛 Also, the drama…Ye, well, there was never really all that much drama on this particular site to begin with, to be honest. Probably because most people here know CM, and what he stands for.

          • Rawr

Oh okay, well that’s good. As you know I don’t use IRC and was wondering as he hadn’t commented on here since he had a few haters, and thought maybe they drove him away or something lol

Best of luck with the VN stuff anyways.

          • Rokudaime

            Thanks! ^_^

      • Chocolatemilkgod

Huh. Let’s use the power of selective quoting!

“Basic translation and proofreading of all three LB EX’s routes is done in three months?”

        “…Yes. …Guarantee it will happen.”

There we go, confirmed! Jokes aside, as always, thanks for the translation, guys. I love the work fluffy did with little busters the original, and I’m really excited to replay the game with the extra content! Maybe eventually we’ll even see an official translation of the game spurred on by the hard work of the translators and by fans of the game; it happened with Planetarian, so who knows.

  • Saya Sakamoto

XD That’s a really convoluted way of getting you to give me an estimate of when LB EX might be out. 3+ months, probably 5 or 6 max. Thanks!

  • Sasasasasako

Thank you for your translation effort for all fans!
I will keep waiting for the tranlsation of Little Busters EX to be completed! No matter how much longer it is!

    Arigatou Gozaimashu!

  • ps-gunkie

    Hello

So it seems that this gets asked a lot, but looks like it’s been a month or so since the last time, so here goes:

    How’s progress going on Clannad?

I’m currently playing it (this is the first VN I’ve ever played, right after watching the anime for the first time as well 🙂 ) using the latest Baka-Tsuki patch, and while it works fairly well the missing names that pop up everywhere (Nagisa’s name being blank and Tomoya’s name referring to a missing string) break the immersion a bit; especially since I read it gets worse in After Story, which I haven’t reached yet.

I know you guys advise to hold off on playing the VN until your new patch is released, but it’s too late to quit now!

In case the new Clannad patch is still months away, wouldn’t it be possible to release what you have already in ther meantime? It’s bound to be miles ahead of the current patch you have up.

Thanks in advance, and keep up the good work! 🙂

    • Rokudaime

I’ll have to concede that progress on Clannad has been kind of slow lately. Many of the members of the team have been busy with other projects and RL. You’ll just have to be patient. As for releasing a partial patch, I don’t think the team wants to do that, since the Baka-Tsuki patch is already a fairly good but unpolished patch, and the whole point of this project is to correct this and turn it into a polished patch. Releasing an unfinished project would be kind of counterproductive, and a little pointless in this case. Sorry I can’t be of more help. :-/

      • ps-gunkie

Ah, that’s unfortunate, I was hoping for a nice Christmas present from Doki in the form of the finished translation, but I guess it can’t be helped. :p

If you say the current patch is pretty good then I don’t mind though, I read somewhere that the BT patch was shoddy/unfinished in some part, particularly in After Story, so I was a little worried. If it’s playable though it should be fine.

        Thanks for your reply! 🙂

        • Rokudaime

Well, those two statements aren’t really mutually exclusive. I’d say that, yes, the BT patch is totally playable, but I’d also that yes, it is unfinished, and it is especially shoddy in After Story.

          • ps-gunkie

Alright, I’ll try to wait until a decent patch is out before continuing with Clannad then. Thanks for the info. Any guesses on when we might be seeing it?

Anyway, keep up the good work, best of luck with finishing the patch! 🙂

          • Rokudaime

Well, it seems a lot of you expect it to be done within a few months, or even earlier, but you might get disappointed. One of the translators on the project told me it might be another two years…but, well, to be honest I don’t really know. ┐( ̄_ ̄)┌ It’s kind of hard to predict I think. The speed of the work being done fluctuates as people become more or less busy with other projects and/or real life.

          • Well, considering it has been worked on on and off by various groups of people for almost 7 years now I suppose 2 more years is nothing. 😛

Anyway, I understand why it’s a slow process and why it might take quite a long time to finish this. I’m just looking forward to it, probably a little too eagerly.

            Thanks again. 🙂

          • Rokudaime

You’re welcome. 😉 I’m glad you’re looking forward to it.

  • Sasaseko Sashimi

    Konnichiwa VN Team,

I want to ask a question regarding Little Busters EX/ME Progress. Does VN Team is taking break or the progress is stopped for some reason?
Anyway, I am not pushing, its just my mind is curious enough to know what happened regarding Little Busters progress.
Thank you for your time and effort!

    • Rokudaime

Read a few posts up on this page. This was already asked earlier this month. The translation is progressing just fine. In fact it’s going very well.

      • Sasaseko Sashimi

Ah yes, I read the post. I was just wondering why the tracking was not moving. If it is going fine, I guess this will raise my spirit to wait the patch to be released =)
