Tomoyo After - English Patch v1

Hello everyone! Approximately 17 months ago, I decided to expand into the area of Visual Novels, and take on Tomoyo After as our first project. Finally, we are able to present the completed patch to you. Thank you all for your patience! Many people have been involved in this project, and I would like to thank Clannad_Man for his leadership. If it wasn’t for him, who knows when we would have finished this project. I’d also like to thank Delwack for his role in leading after Clannad_Man became occupied with RL. Special mention to the translators Kuzu, NeWbY and egshady for persevering with this project. A full list of credits will be included with the readme.

Delwack has a few words to say on this release.

Greetings everyone! I’m Delwack, a relatively new addition to the Doki VN team. Before I get into some of the other details, just a few quick note on the patch itself. This patch executable is rather simplistic and it uses the default director TA is normally installed to. If you chose to install TA to a directory other than the default one, be sure to point the patcher to the right directory! Note that if you’ve played the game before in Japanese, the save games are not compatable with the English version. Please delete any files found in C:\KEY\智代アフター\SAVEDATA (default directory again) before installing this patch.

With that out of the way…
I joined when Doki absorbed the Clannad project, and offered to lend a hand with Tomoyo After. As with many projects, Doki’s first attempt at translation a visual novel with Tomoyo After has not gone as smoothly as we would have liked. A lot of work went not only into the text, but into getting all the things around it working properly. While we have worked hard to solve many issues, there are still outstanding issues both major and minor that we are looking to resolve. I’m here today to give you a flavor for some of the known issues and challenges that we are still looking to overcome.

Major issues:
Font selection: The default font used is MS Gothic (MS ゴシック) with bolding and shadows enabled. The font options are not currently functioning properly. Attempts to change the font will result in using the lowest quality, no-shadow, no bolding version of the selected font. It is not possible to revert back to the default font as set up without reinstalling the patch.

Line Overruns: Luckily the game doesn’t crash when a large chunk of text runs over the 3-lines allocated to it. It does, however, cause some odd corruption of the name tag box. This is likely an issue inside of rlbable, as this behavior doesn’t appear on other VNs that share the same resources.

Known Crash Issues: From the start-up screen, attempting to load a save on the first line of July 14th will crash the game.

Minor issues:
D&T line-overruns: The auto-line breaking used throughout the game doesn’t work properly for D&T. We are working on either fixing it or adding in manual line breaks.

D&T skill cut-ins: Minor display issues with 2 cut-in skills (uses an incorrect older style for the cutins.)

D&T item name inconsistency: There are a handful of item and skill images that are inconsistent with the text. Some of this is intentional, due to space limits, but we are still working on fixing all the inconsistencies.

D&T item puns: The bane of translation effort, there are a frightful number of puns with the item names and descriptions. Figuring them all out of half the battle, trying to properly convey them the other half.

Some system message titles still in JP: We’ve tried to catch everything, but there are some occasional system messages (like if you try to close the program through alt+f4) that are still in JP. These should not adversely affect your play experience.

Despite these issues, I hope you enjoy this patch, and look forward to the day when we release a final version.

What a journey this has been, eh? I don’t know about you, but from my perspective, it’s been a wild ride. With rapids. Several class five rapids. But, we got through them, together.
The release of this translation patch is something I think we’ve all been looking forward to for a long time. Sure, the patch isn’t entirely polished (yet), but to have even arrived at this stage is something I’ve had a difficult time wrapping my head around. We did it! And that, ladies and gents, means I have some heartfelt confessions to make.

I cannot begin to properly express my gratitude to the fine men and women who have worked on this project as members of the Doki Visual Novel Department. It has been a true joy to work with each and every one of you. I know better than anyone the extremes it took to co-ordinate everyone’s busy schedules together, but you stuck with it, even though I’m certain my many demands placed a burden on your shoulders. For your persistence, passion, and for the great service you have provided to the Key Kazoku as well as to Clannad Fans worldwide:

To the many people who worked on this project from its Baka-Tsuki days, kudos for setting the foundation and getting the ball rolling. Though I’m sure progress was not as forthcoming as you would have liked, my hope for you is that when you play through the patch, you’ll be able to relive your experiences volunteering at B-T, and gain a sense of pride from knowing your contributions will live on. For your ambition and vision:

Even though I resisted, you kept at it, and as a result I have been able to experience something I will cherish for the rest of my days. Finally, to everyone who has supported the project since its inception… As the VN Team can attest, you’ve made the entire experience worthwhile. Sometimes all the motivation it took for the team to get going was a quick look at the main TA post to see all of the appreciation you showered upon them. Though not directly involved, the fans of the Tomoyo After Translation Project have played as large a role in the scheme of things as anyone. Even those from traditionally hostile groups have been cordial, and I respect them for that. It is due to the Doki Legion and Clannad Fans from around the world that this project was resurrected from its neglected state and raised to the position it’s at today. For everyone who has ever shown any interest in the project, the VN Team, or works from Key/Visual Art’s:

It is my sincere desire that everyone enjoys the patch and supports the great people over at Key/Visual Art’s by purchasing a version of the game. While of course I cannot force you to do so, providing some sort of financial support to Key will allow them to continue making great games for everyone to enjoy. I won’t preach, since many of you likely don’t want to hear it; just consider respecting their efforts in some way.
To conclude, here are the plans for the VN Division in the immediate future: work to polish the TA patch will continue, succeeded by efforts to translate the new portions found in the Memorial edition of the game, and finally followed by the final translations / edits for CLANNAD. Though my own role in this process is drawing to a close, I ask that you continue to show the amazing support to the people at Doki as you have done for me and the rest of the Visual Novel Division. Exciting times lie ahead, in each of our unique paths. Forging onward is where the fun really beings!

  • i do apologise for being another person jumping the gun, but this is direct to the translation team: how soon could we expect to hear news/updates on Tomoyo After Memorial Edition (ME) patch ?
    i for one was very satisfied with the v1 patch of the original and was content on finishing it within a day. all the errors i encountered were brought up by others so no need of me to repeat it, as there weren’t many anyway 🙂
    as much as it’s going to be painful to wait, i really am looking forward to reading the ENG translation of the ME one day, purely because of the extra dialogue !

      I can’t give an estimation for the ME patch, but will have more information once we start work on it. The team is taking a well deserved rest right now.

    It only has menu sounds, but has no character voices, bgm, and sound effects

    the game worked the first time for me, after that, i would try to open it and there would just be a black screen. However, i discovered that deleting the file “save999.sav” in the SAVEDATA folder would let the game start up again. But everytime i want to play the game i have to go into the folder and re delete save999.sav, I’m sure this wasn’t intented so is there a way to fix it?

      This is quite odd. Can you provide a little more information about your computer specifications and setup at http://forums.fansub.co/index.php?board=6.0

      We’ll need to look it over. Also, could anyone else having the same problem please post too? There are some start-up issues where we’ve seen some black-screening, but it’s never been 100% consistent where it simply refuses to start up after the first time. Usually closing it and trying again gets it to start up.

      Hopefully we can isolate what is causing this.

        Same problem. I haven’t tried the save fix but it worked the first time but when I opened it again it has a black screen.

    For being a Clannad fan and TomoyaxTomoyo fan having this english patch released was a blessing. I played this game when it was first released and hoped for a translation well here it is and is grateful to all of the people who helped out on the patch. Even if it is a minor one I’m still thankful, it helped to get this project finished and putting a smile on my face and hopefully every other fans out there.

    im having some problems with where to place the patch file, i downloaded the iso and burned onto a dvd, i also tried running it on deamon tools, im sorry but im very new to the whole VN thing, but i want to get into it more, so if someone could please help with where i should place the patch file i would be very grateful.

      Just running (DAEMON Tools) or inserting (ISO on DVD) the disc alone won’t help. Install the game first, from the disc, then put the patch file into the folder where the game was installed, and run it, making sure to install the patch in that folder.

      Again, people, READ previous messages before posting questions! With 7 pages of comments, your question is likely to have already been answered.     I cannot begin to thank you all for this. For a long time I waited, but it certainly was worth it. Before you guys decided to take on the project, I was hopeless, and then, when news came out that you were going to try and release the patch I was so psyched over it. The translantion and the entire work was awesome. I really, really thank you for this, I’m really grateful.

    the game has stopped or maybe lag when start to the opening video but when i move it the game run normally but i missed the opening video

    this game suck balls. there is only 2 endings bad ending and depressive as hell ending

    • You missed some. Also, be sure to file a complaint with Key to let them know how you feel. The large majority of people around the internets have said that, though depressing (it’s a Key VN, duh), it was well worth playing.

      I’m quite pleased that many, many people are able to enjoy the game due to its translation, and that they are supporting/endorsing Key in some way.

      Like the C-Man said, there are more endings than that. Also, if you still feel cheated out of a satisfactory ending, wait for the ME patch and play the ME Edition of the game. It has a better ending. That said, you’re denouncing an entire game as crap just because of it’s ending? You’re incredibly shallow lol.

      So if a story doesn’t have a happy ending, it automatically sucks bawlz? What about those things you feel in the way to the ending? About the rewarding end of the first part?

        I would be okay (though bewildered) with it if he just disliked the game in general, but saying a game, anime, or whatever else sucks just because he didn’t like the ending is not cool. I don’t respect shallow subjective opinions like that. What kind of moron denounces an entire work just because of it’s ending? (‘¬_¬)

          Eh, it’s his own business if he can’t stand the ending being sad. I thought it was sad but worth it, but if he differs then… well, his loss. :’P

          I see your point though; there’s much more to a story than it’s ending… unless it’s a really really short or really really badly writen story, but that’s a whole other thing and clearly not the case.

    For anyone wondering, as this is a KEY product it runs on RealLive.exe, and can be run with Mac OS X and Linux with the right tools. The Japanese version works smoothly with with “rlvm” (props to the developers of the software), and if you have the CD with you, you can simply open the CD with rlvm (type rlvm on google, it’s a free software). With Wine (or any software that allows exe files to be installed to mac) it is possible also to install the patch. Just a FYI, the patch works with rlvm, very smoothly at that.

    This might be a bit dumb, I don’t know, but I can load it up fine and all but when I go to read it, it comes up with “Error: interpreter detection failed. Unable to read format text”. I really don’t know what to do here ._.

      Don’t worry, it’s a common error. You need to download this thing called Visual C++ from the microsoft page. I hear the latest version doesn’t solve the problem, so you might have to look for the 2005 one. <3

            Instead of replying with one sentence, please list a couple of solutions or steps. I really do not like wasting other people’s time.

            I replied with one sentence because that’s how simple it is. You install it, and if you installed the correct version then when you run the game you should not have that error.

            After installing, you don’t really need to do anything with it; it’s like a passive ability for your PC, if you will.

            So, right now you just have to play and… well, play. That’s it.

            If the error still appears, you’ve either installed the wrong version, or have the “wrong” OS. :V

    i need some help….im using a mac, i downloaded the game for mac, i downloaded mplayer2, i downloaded rlvm, and i have no clue how to instal it, i have read the installation file in the “patchv1” but non the less i still cant install it….it say from the mounted cd of tomoyo after copy…..where is the mounted CD?

      We don’t know what kind of downloaded copy you are using, so there is no way for us to know what files are included in your copy, and so we have no way of knowing where your Tomoyo After CD image/iso file is, assuming there is one included. But…assuming there is one included, what that readme of yours means is that you use a program like DAEMON Tools to mount (load/run) he image/iso file, and then the game’s installer should pop up if it has autorun enabled, if not, you’ll need to go into the CD folder after mounting the image, and run the setup program. Then install the game. After that, download the patch from here, run it, and install the patch files into the folder where you installed the game. Oh, and just to make absoultely sure you get this (though it seems you’ve already downloaded the game), the GAME is not included in the PATCH available here. You’ll need to get that yourself.

      On a side note I have to overthink my strategy in D&T…There are still so many floors ahead ;_;

          Just wanted to note that we really do appreciate you helping people out with a lot of these questions.

          We are looking to revise some of the readme instructions to provide clarification on some of the issues they’ve had that we may have overlooked: like the need to switch (or not, depending) the OS’s non-unicode program local and a few other things veteran VN players often take for granted, as well as best practices for handling this patch with the previous BT partial patches.

      its irritating…just shows these people are not true fans.
      Because true fans will camp this page and read comments until it is released.
      By then they should know that this patch is the language patch only..
