One more episode to go and two more chapters to go… and then I can sleep on Mondays.
Wall-of-text note about the alternate OP from the translator:
The opening theme in this episode seems to clearly be an homage to Kajiura Yuki. They’ve taken unique aspects of Kajiura’s songwriting style and exaggerated them to the point of parody. The song opens with an impossible to decipher chant. It could be some obscure language or entirely made up. With the Japanese pronunciation, you can’t tell.
Once the song proper starts, the lyrics are all pretentious and deep-sounding phrases, loosely strung together. Half of the words are clearly made-up, created by sticking serious, dark, and deep-sounding kanji together, so it’s hard to tell what’s even meant without seeing it written out. And impossible to transcribe, much less translate!
What isn’t made up gives you an idea of how faux deep and pretentious sounding it is meant to be. Phrases like “The garden of the end”; “The night of despair”; “The thorned path”; “Wings of prayer”; “The flower of peace”; et cetera. Remember, these phrases are very loosely strung together, so interpreting any connection between them is difficult.
Basically, this song is a completely untranslatable, but entirely brilliant, parody of not just Kajiura Yuki’s songwriting, but also the kind of faux-super-deep writing also common in Japanese fantasy game theme songs.
This song is a masterpiece and Hirose Sayaka is a genius for writing it.
Though I would love to see someone prove me completely wrong by transcribing and making any sense of it.
