Tomoyo After - English Patch v1

You can post error reports about the game itself here.

You can post errors in the scripts here.

Hello everyone! Approximately 17 months ago, I decided to expand into the area of Visual Novels, and take on Tomoyo After as our first project. Finally, we are able to present the completed patch to you. Thank you all for your patience! Many people have been involved in this project, and I would like to thank Clannad_Man for his leadership. If it wasn’t for him, who knows when we would have finished this project. I’d also like to thank Delwack for his role in leading after Clannad_Man became occupied with RL. Special mention to the translators Kuzu, NeWbY and egshady for persevering with this project. A full list of credits will be included with the readme.

Delwack has a few words to say on this release.

Greetings everyone! I’m Delwack, a relatively new addition to the Doki VN team. Before I get into some of the other details, just a few quick note on the patch itself. This patch executable is rather simplistic and it uses the default director TA is normally installed to. If you chose to install TA to a directory other than the default one, be sure to point the patcher to the right directory! Note that if you’ve played the game before in Japanese, the save games are not compatable with the English version. Please delete any files found in C:\KEY\智代アフター\SAVEDATA (default directory again) before installing this patch.

With that out of the way…
I joined when Doki absorbed the Clannad project, and offered to lend a hand with Tomoyo After. As with many projects, Doki’s first attempt at translation a visual novel with Tomoyo After has not gone as smoothly as we would have liked. A lot of work went not only into the text, but into getting all the things around it working properly. While we have worked hard to solve many issues, there are still outstanding issues both major and minor that we are looking to resolve. I’m here today to give you a flavor for some of the known issues and challenges that we are still looking to overcome.

Major issues:
Font selection: The default font used is MS Gothic (MS ゴシック) with bolding and shadows enabled. The font options are not currently functioning properly. Attempts to change the font will result in using the lowest quality, no-shadow, no bolding version of the selected font. It is not possible to revert back to the default font as set up without reinstalling the patch.

Line Overruns: Luckily the game doesn’t crash when a large chunk of text runs over the 3-lines allocated to it. It does, however, cause some odd corruption of the name tag box. This is likely an issue inside of rlbable, as this behavior doesn’t appear on other VNs that share the same resources.

Known Crash Issues: From the start-up screen, attempting to load a save on the first line of July 14th will crash the game.

Minor issues:
D&T line-overruns: The auto-line breaking used throughout the game doesn’t work properly for D&T. We are working on either fixing it or adding in manual line breaks.

D&T skill cut-ins: Minor display issues with 2 cut-in skills (uses an incorrect older style for the cutins.)

D&T item name inconsistency: There are a handful of item and skill images that are inconsistent with the text. Some of this is intentional, due to space limits, but we are still working on fixing all the inconsistencies.

D&T item puns: The bane of translation effort, there are a frightful number of puns with the item names and descriptions. Figuring them all out of half the battle, trying to properly convey them the other half.

Some system message titles still in JP: We’ve tried to catch everything, but there are some occasional system messages (like if you try to close the program through alt+f4) that are still in JP. These should not adversely affect your play experience.

Despite these issues, I hope you enjoy this patch, and look forward to the day when we release a final version.

And a few words from Clannad_Man.

Greetings Doki Legion, from your brother in arms, the Clannad Man.

What a journey this has been, eh? I don’t know about you, but from my perspective, it’s been a wild ride. With rapids. Several class five rapids. But, we got through them, together.
The release of this translation patch is something I think we’ve all been looking forward to for a long time. Sure, the patch isn’t entirely polished (yet), but to have even arrived at this stage is something I’ve had a difficult time wrapping my head around. We did it! And that, ladies and gents, means I have some heartfelt confessions to make.

I cannot begin to properly express my gratitude to the fine men and women who have worked on this project as members of the Doki Visual Novel Department. It has been a true joy to work with each and every one of you. I know better than anyone the extremes it took to co-ordinate everyone’s busy schedules together, but you stuck with it, even though I’m certain my many demands placed a burden on your shoulders. For your persistence, passion, and for the great service you have provided to the Key Kazoku as well as to Clannad Fans worldwide:

Thank you!

To the many people who worked on this project from its Baka-Tsuki days, kudos for setting the foundation and getting the ball rolling. Though I’m sure progress was not as forthcoming as you would have liked, my hope for you is that when you play through the patch, you’ll be able to relive your experiences volunteering at B-T, and gain a sense of pride from knowing your contributions will live on. For your ambition and vision:

Thank you!

I must give a mention to Holo and Dys for initially reaching out to me to assist with the project. Even though I resisted, you kept at it, and as a result I have been able to experience something I will cherish for the rest of my days. You have been respectful of my conditions and wishes, and have always been open to suggestions. For your service as diplomats:

Thank you!

Finally, to everyone who has supported the project since its inception… As the VN Team can attest, you’ve made the entire experience worthwhile. Sometimes all the motivation it took for the team to get going was a quick look at the main TA post to see all of the appreciation you showered upon them. Though not directly involved, the fans of the Tomoyo After Translation Project have played as large a role in the scheme of things as anyone. Even those from traditionally hostile groups have been cordial, and I respect them for that. It is due to the Doki Legion and Clannad Fans from around the world that this project was resurrected from its neglected state and raised to the position it’s at today. For everyone who has ever shown any interest in the project, the VN Team, or works from Key/Visual Art’s:

THANK YOU!!!

It is my sincere desire that everyone enjoys the patch and supports the great people over at Key/Visual Art’s by purchasing a version of the game. While of course I cannot force you to do so, providing some sort of financial support to Key will allow them to continue making great games for everyone to enjoy. I won’t preach, since many of you likely don’t want to hear it; just consider respecting their efforts in some way.
To conclude, here are the plans for the VN Division in the immediate future: work to polish the TA patch will continue, succeeded by efforts to translate the new portions found in the Memorial edition of the game, and finally followed by the final translations / edits for CLANNAD. Though my own role in this process is drawing to a close, I ask that you continue to show the amazing support to the people at Doki as you have done for me and the rest of the Visual Novel Division. Exciting times lie ahead, in each of our unique paths. Forging onward is where the fun really beings!

Be careful out there, folks. I’ll catch ya’ on the flip side.

Happy trails!

Though it’s a sad one, thank you very much for completing this.

  • Woto

Very good, great job folks, and if the Doki VN department is going to keep going , may I recommend Guilty Crown Lost Xmas. I am working on extracting all the scripts from it and I am already 90% done with it. It’s only about 6 hours long as well so it won’t be such a mission to translate hopefully, if you are interested I’ll throw the scripts up somewhere once I’m done

  • Duster

I read through the bugs and issues portion of the readme but I can’t seem to understand this. When I play the game with the patch implemented (it IS working) the font isnt exactly…english. It’s random characters and numbers. I’ve tried reinstalling the patch and it’s still like this.

    • Rokudaime

Ah, that’s a Locale problem. You need to either:
1.Set your system Locale to Japanese in your Windows Control Panel, or:
2.Run the game using Applocale, which is free to download. just Google it.
If you do this, the text should show up properly. : )

    • Modhesh

Or you can try renaming the folder of the game. maybe your folder name is something unreadable too. I didn’t even use applocale and it’s working fine.

  • Celena

Thank you for all your hard work, Doki! That moment when the game starts up in English. <3 I'll definitely be enjoying this release for a long time to come.

  • Winwaker

wooooo hooooo!!! Finally released, you guys are awesome and you know it so many thanks for your hard work and perseverance. Keep it up and be happy. 😉

  • Biribiri

Im a sucker for good write ups. Damn you Clannad_Man…imma have to buy a copy now.

    Ohwell….money well spent.

Thanks for all your hard work guys.

    • Hello there, Biribiri! So you thought my writing was alright, eh? Then I can assume the sentiment got across. I meant every word of it!

Thank you for supporting Key! Each game purchased ensures that we’ll all be able to enjoy Key works for years to come. I hope you enjoy the patch. =)

  • Horse

Great to see it finally released. I’m not going to lie, I’m a bit disappointed that the Memorial Edition wasn’t released yet. The changes the memorial edition made are, IMO, extremely important and make the VN 1000x better.

I will be patiently waiting for the next patch for the Memorial Edition. I suggest anyone who has patience to do the same.

    • Hi Horse. (What a name, eh?) The plan was always to release the Memorial Edition patch after the original patch was completed and polished. Personally, I’m not an H-fan, so I like the Memorial edition as well. However, when the project started, the VN Team did not have the capabilities to work on the Memorial edition of the game. Recently, that changed due to some collaboration between members of the former Clannad VN Staff at Baka-Tsuki and the Little Busters! VN Translation team. Since then, those members have decided to join Doki’s VN Department on a full time basis.

  • Rokudaime

Well, Ixlone and Shiro was just trolling then (I should have figured, they both tend to do that…). ; ) I’m happy to see this, and thanks for all your hard work Doki VN Department! ^^

Me though, I’m sticking to my plan of playing Clannad first, and then this game, and I also plan on playing both versions (Regular and ME Edition) as well, so I’m just going to wait for the Clannad patch, the Tomoyo After final patch, and the Tomoyo After ME patch. I was in no hurry to begin with though. I don’t really have time to play any Visual Novel at all until mid-December, due to my studies. ┐( ̄ー ̄)┌ So I’ll just keep waiting patiently.

  • Caboose

Thanks for the amazing release, however, I’m having some troubles with the game. I patched it and everything seems okay. except when I actually play the game. It says “Error: Unable to format text”. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

    • HanoFist

One thing that might help (I’m assuming Windoze here) … When you opened the game for the first time, did it pop up a window asking you to choose a font? Did you then pick MS Gothic? If the answers are Yes, then No you might try reinstalling the patch then choosing that font. That’s the only idea I have.

Well, maybe MS Gothic isn’t on your system and you need to find/dl/install it, but I’d figure it’s in the patch(?)

    • Did HanoFist’s suggestion fix your problem?

    • Silly Helen

No, that’s not it. That error basically means your system lacks the visual c++ stuffy stuff.

You have to download this (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3387) or another version of it, according to your system specs. That should fix it. <3

  • twdarkeh

Guys, let me just say, I love you. So very very much. *waits for ME edition*

    • twdarkeh

Oh, and Clannad_man, you are the greatest. Even if your role in the project is ending, I’m eternally grateful that you were a part of it, because you made this project as fun for the people waiting for the release as I’m sure it was for the team working on it.

      • Rawr

Hear hear. Clannad Man did an awesome job, echoeing your sentiment there 🙂

      • Awww. I love you too, twdarkeh. *brofists* You too, Rawr. *high fives*

I’m glad you feel I’ve made the wait enjoyable. I believe that interaction with the community is very important, and am very happy that everyone has been receptive to the interaction.

  • Solaristics

What’s the difference between Reg and memorial edition

    • Solaristics

      Scratch that, figured it out.

      • For anyone else who is wondering: Orig = H-Scenes & Shorter, Memorial = No-H & Expanded Storylines

        • Rokudaime

And the ME Edition has voices. Before someone shouts out that their copy of the Standard Edition has voices as well: That’s because you’re using a downloaded copy that has the voices from the PSP version of the game patched into it. The regular copy of TA does not normally have voices.

          • WiseKouichi

that was the main reason for me to wait for ME 😀 does the psp version also have tomoya’s voice? cause as far as I know ME does have it 😀

          • Rokudaime

Not sure actually. You’ll have to ask an expert on the subject, like Clannad Man for instance. 😉

  • Khorne11

THANK YOU DOKI I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!!!! time to play what I’ve been waiting for for so long! 😀 thanks and thanks again

  • Null_Shock

Thank you Doki! I wasn’t aware you were doing a Linux patch, that is awesome as both my laptops are running Linux(Debian, one is pure Linux the other dual boots windows 7), I will have to try this out in Linux. I wish there was more I could do to show my appreciation. I would offer my time to help with projects, but I have my own coding projects at the moment…If you need donations, or even some beta testing in future VN projects in the future I will try to help as much as I can…If you request it from the Doki Legion.

All of You deserve far more appreciation than you get, you do all this work to provide us with pure awesomeness for free. Seriously your translations are by far my favorite. Okay I think that is enough ass kissing for now lol. Thanks again, You guys are pure awesome.

Loyal Doki Soldier and CO of the S.T.F.C. Forces(Sawa’s Tits Fan Club),
    Null_Shock

    • Rokudaime

Why do you have 2 laptops? Isn’t that kind of pointless? : p

      • Rawr

He’s probably rich lol. I only have 1 laptop that I don’t really use, and my PC :3

        • Null_Shock

Not rich…closer to poor actually, I just work in the I.T. field and come across laptops and various other things.

      • Null_Shock

Ehh One is for classes/gaming(emulators and such) the other I code on….I work in the I.T. field so decent laptops are easy to come by. They usually need a little work like replacing a part or two, sometimes just a nuke and boot works. Also I have more than 2 laptops, only 2 work with out any issues atm, when I get a little more money I will like fix up the other 3 and give them to various family members(the ones I like.)

You are right though 2 laptops and a PC is a little overkill…but while they are decent laptops they are nothing compared to my PC. She is a custom rig and a power house.

        • Rokudaime

          I see…

          • Null_Shock

Also it is useful having multiple computers, specially when running Linux. Each one has a purpose and there is nothing but tools for that purpose installed. Like The one I code on, with the exception of a few emulators(which I add/remove/modify their code at times when I run into issues) There is nothing but various compilers, reference primers, and various other dev tools. But I only carry one of the laptops outside and that is the one I take to class so I can take notes or work on papers or other class related projects. The other is just like a mini desktop…though it takes up a lot of space as I am already runny multiple displays. It also comes in handy when a friend is over and we decide to hit up a random MMO for awhile.

      • I have seven laptops, but that’s probably because I haven’t thrown out any laptops since 2006, and I have a sizable family.

    • Greetings, Doki Legionaire! Thank you for offering to assist. If you want to assist, I’m sure the team will accept it, though your appreciation alone is enough.

Free is good, ain’t it? It’s even better when you get top quality stuff in return. The VN Team feels the released patch was good, but also want to improve on it further in the near future. Look forward to it!

  • Takoa

Thank you so much, Doki! I’ve been anticipating this visual novel for years and I wouldn’t be able to play it without learning to read Japanese (with which I’m a long way off) if it weren’t for you. Thank you so much for all your hard work on this project and I will continue to be your fan now and in the future.

    • Hello Takoa! That’s one of the main reasons why the translators here help out. They have nothing to gain but to share their experiences with anime/VN fans. They do a nice job, no? ^^

  • HanoFist

Dang, I’ve been so engrossed in the game for the last 7 hours I forgot to say “thank you!!1eleven!!”

  • max_payne

this is where i should come up with fantastic gratitude words and stuff, and talk about how much i appreciate your dedication and how long I’ve been waiting, and on and on …. but i am sure you’ve heard (and will keep hearing for long time) enough to last you 10 life times, and you HAVE earned it!

all i can say is FINALLY it’s out, and a very simple but sincere “thank you”.

    • Null_Shock

Over the top displays of appreciation are still infinitely better than the little douche-nozzles that complain over stupid shit like delays or a typos, when they are getting the stuff for free from people who dedicate a large portion of their time to provide said awesomeness. Great I have irritated myself, by thinking about those fraking fucktards….It is one thing to Troll, but these types are just plain annoying….Sorry people irritate me rather easily at times, and I tend to rant about it randomly.(and I typed it, so it would be an even bigger waste of my time if I did not post it.)

      • This is the unpolished version, so if anyone feels like bringing up typos and such in a non-douchenozzly manner we’d appreciate it. (゚∀゚)┛

        • Null_Shock

Of course. Bringing typos and various other errors to Doki’s attention is expected of any community like this one in my opinion anyway, but like you said in a non-douchenozzly manner…HUGE difference in reporting and being an asshole about it.

Couldn’t this be considered a sort of open beta? Oh is there anyone in-particular you want bugs/typos/ or any other issues directed to or just anyone who worked on the project?

        • Yep, non-‘doucheiness’ is nice XD

    • Max, your thank you is much appreciated. The thought itself is what is important. =)

  • SinZ

Just, wow…When i first saw the project started 17 months ago i was really hopeful for the release and it’s here! Thank you guys so much for translating this, Tomoyo was my fav heroine in Clannad anyway XD.

  • Ryptahi

    Thank you so much Doki.

  • Dary16

Thank you Doki! I waited for long time since June.
I appreciated your translation although many flaws made it delayed for long time.
One words: I hope that Key 15th project will succesful!

    • Hi Dary16! be happy you’ve only been waiting since June, the project started at Baka-Tsuki back in 2007!

I also hope the Key 15th project will be a success. For those who haven’t looked yet, check it out!

  • leslie

OMFG i’ve been waiting for this from day 1 i’m so excited i could die, thanx a million for all your hard work. from 1 die hard clannad fan i love you guys

    • Hi Leslie! Nice to see a mixed gender turnout for the patch.

So you’ve been waiting since 2007, eh? Quite a long time. (See that, Dary16, SEE??) Here at Doki, everyone’s a Clannad fan, so you’ll fit right in.

Stick around, mesh in with the community. It’s pretty active!

  • nat2290

Thanks for getting this release out but i’m having trouble running the game, it refuses to start without admin access and then won’t let me load anything i’ve saved, seem’s to be a problem with the REALLIVE which i had no problem with for Clannad or LB

    • Are you running on a limited account, and/or did you install the game somewhere in “C:\Program Files\”? Those two factors might affect your game.

      • nat2290

I install it in the KEY folder with all the other games straight off the C drive and when i try to run it i get the outline of the window and then it shuts down before a cursor appears. To run it with the partial patch which i did 2 months ago i had to paste the Little Busters! REALLIVE in, but it seem’s i can’t do that without a gameexe.ini error now, does this have anything to do with my computer running XP?

        • BilliumMoto

Are you playing it with a Japanese locale? You get a gameexe.ini error if you don’t, from what I’ve done.

          • nat2290

yes i’ve been running JP locale since i installed Muv-Luv, i’ve tried with or without system locale and it just refuses to work with an ability to load save games.

        • XP is fine, since Tomoyo After was released in 2005, back when Windows XP was the latest Windows (Vista wasn’t out yet).

          Some more questions:
          1. Which partial patch did you use before?
          2. Which version of Tomoyo After do you have?

Also, try a complete uninstall (including deleting the whole Tomoyo After folder), fresh install of the Japanese game, fresh install of the English patch, then run it.

          • nat2290

standard edition (H-version) and it was the baka-tsuki 25% patch or something like that, i’ve tried clean install’s in different folders and it’s the same result every time, game starts to boot and closes before anything’s displayed in the window.

    • How strange. Can you play it in Japanese (unpatched)? Is your computer 32-bit or 64-bit? Any error messages whatsoever?

      • nat2290

without the patch black screen then it auto-closes the window unless run as admin in which case it started once let me save and now reallive crashes whenever i try to start it again, error message gives no code just pop’s up saying reallive has encountered a problem and has to close.

        • Rokudaime

From the fact that you keep mentioning running it as admin (something most of us always do every time), I’m also wondering whether you are running on a limited account, like Polarem asked. You still haven’t answered that. Then again, if that was the problem, you shouldn’t have been able to run it at all, while in your case the game crashes when you try to run it…And clean install didn’t help even when you run it as admin? :-/

          • nat2290

I can only choose the owner account so i assume i’m not on a limited account as i can install/uninstall and change the computers locale with no problems, i’ve tried with 2 different copies now to see if the game itself was corrupted and get the same result. Game will run with no problems without the english patch and with the reallive from little busters which is making me think my computer is having problems running this version of reallive, does it need a DLL other than DT00 or something?

    • Ok, you’re not on a limited account.

The patch requires rlbabel.dll, and the file “1.3.5.4.map” which tells rlbabel.dll how to understand RealLive.exe version 1.3.5.4 which came with Tomoyo After; using “1.3.5.4.map” with the LB version of RealLive, or any other version, will likely cause a crash.

You said “Game will run with no problems without the english patch and with the reallive from little busters” — does this include a fresh install of the Japanese game, without the LB RealLive?

      • nat2290

yes I can’t get it to work with reallive 1.3.5.4, clean installed it twice now, tried different folders, tried everything i can think of that would help it run, running it without the patch results in either a black screen that never loads or a window frame popping up and disapearring, or a black screen and then reallive has stopped working a must shut down. I’ve got clannad, kanon and LB and they never had any problems whatsoever, I think i’m the only one with this problem so god knows what i’m doing wrong/not doing.

        • That’s really weird. I think FrostyLite has that issue too (see http://doki.co/2012/09/22/tomoyo-after-english-patch-v1/comment-page-6/#comments)

Could you report this at http://forums.fansub.co/index.php?topic=822.0 ? We’ll have to look into it.

I don’t suppose you happen to have another computer you can play on?

          • Polarem! You’ve stopped by to assist with the commenting, splendid. Thanks for all your help. =)

          • nat2290

Posted it on the game error thread, and no i cant use another computer as my laptop died earlier this year, oh how i miss windows vista. I’ve established 2 things so far 1, game will never run with jap locale 2 reallive wont work unless i check the protect my system while running as admin in Australia english locale and then won’t let me load saves or it crashes. About to try a US locale just out of interest and a forlorn hope, guess i might be waiting for the ME patch, might have more luck there, thanks for your help though.

          • Rokudaime

Why would you miss Vista? It’s the worst version of Windows that has ever been made. Buggy as hell, and incompatible with with a huge range of stuff. Windows 7 on the other hand, now that’s good stuff. Basically Windows Vista without all the bugs and problems. Took some time for me to get used to it after having used XP for so long, but I love it these days.

  • Anonymousey

Oh man, really excited that this is finally out, congratulations on the release!

Unfortunately, we still have to wait for Memorial Edition to be finished. 🙁

    • lurkmoar

Yeah sadly that’s the only way to legitimately get the game at a decent price these days, too :(.

Or the same edition via the Memorial Box, which is actually pretty easy to find and is a great deal if you haven’t bought any Key games before (just have to find it at the right place so that the shipping on it doesn’t kill you – I think EMS is ~6000yen at that weight).

  • First of all – congratulations. You are too awesome for the word “awesome” to describe.

Second of all – I’ve got really mixed feelings about this. I love good VNs (the best ever being G Senjou no Maou) but… I think I’ve been corrupted with the bestness of the anime series’. I can’t imagine causing Tomoya and Nagisa not to be together. Silly, but I really don’t know if I’m going to play CLANNAD.

I’m definitely not going to play Tomoyo After though – for me her character’s main strong point has always been NOT being in love with Tomoya. And her brother. Holy sh*t, it’s like, what, ten minutes story, yet it makes you cry like a baby? And it’s the exact same thing with another brother-related story in Kanon anime… Key is too great.

    • Rokudaime

G Senjou no Maou best VN ever…Hardly…Not saying it’s bad of course, it’s good, but hardly the best VN ever.

    • Silly Helen

G Senjou no Maou was pretty good, but the best VN ever award goes to… none. It’s a topic way too subjective, to make such a claim.

      The best one that I’ve enjoyed lately is by far Little Busters!, though. Decent art and music, and kickass plot and characters… well, most. I would’ve liked more characterization for Rin. ;_;

And Nagisa… well, I liked how the plot was in her route, but didn’t like that much the character, in comparison to other heroines like Kyou or Tomoyo. Kyou because I go nuts over tsunderes, and Tomoyo because Tomoyo.

Tomoyo and Kyou are always on top in Clannad character polls, so yeah. ; ) Kyou is my favourite too. That said, I like Nagisa, but I think she’s the type of frail, shy female character with low confidence that appeals to guys who get that “I feel so sorry for her! I want her to do well! I want to protect her!” feeling. Which works well with me, I’m weak against that. 😛 Then again, I have a thing for cute, introverted, shy girls as well as outgoing, confident girls, and tsunderes, and well, damn, I probably pretty much like everything… >_< But confident, outgoing girls like Kyou, that have a shyer, cute side as well, and is tsundere from time to time, eh…She's perfect is she not? Or should I say broken? 😛

Please can you make a DDL link, I can’t access Torrent or IRC through my university internet 🙁

I’ve been waiting forever for this and now I can’t download the patch 🙁

    • Null_Shock

Have you tried running through a proxy? or trying another port? You should try googling how to bypass your networks torrent blocking I’m sure you will find a lot of ways to bypass the torrent block.

      • NatsuAY

I don’t really want to get banned or anything from the network as they don’t allow bypassing their blocks. I’m fine with the block, it just means I can’t get this English Patch 🙁

So please could you upload a DDL mirror 🙂

  • wow this is very fast troll ever in this one 😀
