To the members of the Doki Legion and the worldwide ‘Key’ Kazoku,
It is my utmost pleasure to officially announce the undertaking of an unprecedented project. At the urging of fans and after careful consideration by the Baka-Tsuki Translation Team led by Polarem, it has been agreed upon that the completion of the CLANNAD Visual Novel English Translation Project, including all remaining translations, editing work, and associated checks, will henceforth be entrusted to Doki’s Visual Novel Division. It is both an honor and a privilege to serve as the anchor to arguably the most noteworthy VN translation project ever undertaken.
As many of you are no doubt aware, the CLANNAD VN English Translation Project has been underway for years, having been started in 2005 as a one man project and eventually evolving to encompass many noteworthy names in fansubbing. The effort put fourth by those comprising the “Drama Club / Dango Daikazoku” (演劇部 / だんご大家族) including TheWaffleHouse, Sprocket-Hole Subs, and Baka-Tsuki, has spawned a legion of Clannad fans around the world. Though these groups’ ultimate effect on Clannad fandom cannot be precisely quantified, one would be hard-pressed to find a larger, equally passionate collection of fans than those of the aforementioned series. Such fans deserve a final, properly edited, complete translation patch to satisfy their devotion. That is exactly what they are going to get.
As with Tomoyo After, as well as the prior trustees of the CLANNAD VN Translation Project, the game will not be provided along with the translation patch. The single task of the Doki VN Division is to develop translations of the utmost quality for the games it works on. Due to the zeal exuded by the worldwide community in regard to Japanese culture, precise & picturesque translations of associated works, and of Key works in general, anything less than perfection in regard to this undertaking will be deemed unacceptable. With a highly talented, enthusiastic team in place, and as the final translation project I shall personally oversee, we promise to make every effort to not only produce the preeminent (and first truly complete) Clannad translation patch, but to have it be the gold standard for all such translation projects to follow. Naysayers be warned, you will be eating your words.
Thus far, invitations to work on the project have already been accepted by some specific, talented individuals who have shown an interest in the project’s success. While the size and capabilities of the VN Team are plenty sufficient to complete the work expected of them, they could always use some additional help. Holo encourages anyone able and willing to translate or do editing (text, photoshop, video, quality check) to stop by #doki-recruits and send him a message at holo@doki.co. If you have significant time constraints or feel your work ethic is inadequate to maintain a set schedule, I would suggest that you instead support Doki through your words of thanks. The support received by the community is noted and is a significant driving force for why the VN Team (as well as the rest of Doki’s Staff) contributes their time toward causes they find worthwhile. As always, I personally appreciate your support and thank everyone who has offered encouragement to us.
Be prepared, Clannad fans. Swan songs are always the sweetest.
This is great… you think you can do AIR next?
We’re moving along one project at a time. Also, Air was recently picked up by another group.
do you know the name of the group that picked up AIR and i cant wait for this translation
Edgar & Sheeta (Amaterasu) are working on it, though there has been a delay recently.
Hey Clannad Man,
I’m to lazy to look through the 4 pages of posts too see if someone already asked this question.
Concerning installation of this patch: Any word on if a person will be able to install the patch on an already patched ver of Clannad? Or will one need a clean copy to install youtr guys’ patch over?
If you can’t answer this then you can’t answer this but I thoguht I would ask anyways
I know I’m not Clannad Man but I have to say that this is a good question.
I was under the impression that since they transferred the project from baka-tsuki to doki, it’s plausible that doki’s patch will just overwrite the previous patch thereby eliminating the need to get a fresh copy of Clannad VN.
But then again, that’s just my speculation.
As said this is possible but in reality, after playing through visual novels and repatching em i belive it is rather unlikely you will have it done over this patch, but it depends, they are working from the already patched version so its just as possible they could work this one out. Problem is, save data will probably be affected either way.
That is correct. though it is possible to have the patch overwrite the previous one, saved games will not work with the new patch. There is no way to avoid this if the game’s main ‘SEEN’ text is edited.
that’s something I also wanna know 😀
The VN Team’s work can overwrite prior patches, though your prior save data will be useless.
Sorry to have answered this so late.
Would it not be more worth Doki’s time to work on something that hasn’t already been adequately translated?
I read the english translation of Clannad that is already out and I think it’s good enough. I for one would rather see effort put into translating other quality VN’s that haven’t yet been translated.
Though true the english one currently is ‘playable’, the problem with it is more to the fact it is really buggy, ignoring whoever did the original left lots of spelling mistakes and bad grammar mistakes there was lines which didn’t work, commonly invalid strings reports and issues with names and such – in all meaning the translation is good enough for visual novel players… but i think for a normal person it would be a pain to get on with at times (especially in after story). That being said, its selfish on my part but i agree i would rather see effort in something new which i have never played. Nothing against fixing old mistakes but new stuff are always more fun ^^ But this is speaking from the prospective of someone who beat clannad 100% so yeah
‘Good enough’ is not an adequate quality for the game many regard as the greatest VN ever made. Due to the following of Key visual novels and the Clannad ‘franchise’ in general, coupled with Doki’s affinity towards Key, this is a project that the VN Team is proud to work on.
What Madoka says about errors is true, though some of the mentioned issues have begun to have been fixed in recent patches by Baka-Tsuki. (To those who are not aware, they transferred the project over to Doki.) Some translations haven’t even been finished, let alone editing. While it is interesting to try new things, the alternative view is that polishing classics is just as if not more important a way to contribute to this genre. This is the view Doki’s VN Team has taken in regards to this project.
Finally, there are many Easter Eggs in Clannad; a 100% completion only provides a fraction of what the game has to offer.
I’m a bit confused – what exactly are you translating? Is Clannad and After Story finished?
Doki released the anime Clannad and Clannad ~After Story~ already. The VN Division is working on completing the translation & editing of the original Clannad Visual Novel.
Two questions about this.
#1)Will I have to already have a copy of the visual novel, or will that be included with the patch?
#2)Will the patch be free?
If anyone could answer this when they have the time, that’d be great. I’m pretty sure others have asked the same question, but I’m not about to stop typing and go check. Thanks for your time.
Yes to both.
Thank you for replying, but I have a question regarding the answer to my first question:yes to which part? Will I need a copy, or is a copy of the visual novel included? Thank you for your time.
The patch will be released publicly on the blog here, distributed by our usual methods (torrent, XDCC, DDL)
The actual game will NOT be released publicly for obvious reasons. However, if you come on IRC, copies of the game are available via XDCC.
Thank you very much, this was very helpful. But, I’m a tiny bit stupid. What’s XDCC?
XDCC is a form of direct download, where you connect direcly to a server and request a transfer over IRC. See http://doki.co/support/faqs/ (last Q) for more information.
I plan on having weekends in the near future where I will help people obtain the game on IRC via XDCC.
Sorry, this must be annoying by now, but where would I find you? I just started using IRC today, so I’m fuzzy as to where I’d be looking, if you’ll be helping people get it on the weekends.
Look at the list of people in the channel. I am usually found at the top of the list, with ~ prefix.
I assume the patch will work with the Full Voice version?
Anyways, glad to hear you guys are working on this, knowing that it’s in good hands.
The full voice version of the patch will work with the full voice version of the game. The original will not.
Very interested in this, will be following the project’s status. I have yet to watch the anime, nor have I played the VN before, so a bit of waiting might be worth it to get a streamlined fresh experience right from the start.
Awww…. you’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t take the time to watch Clannad and Clannad ~After Story~. Just sayin’…
:O
This post was made on my birthday.
I’m cool with that 😛
I look forward to playing Clannad in English from you guys!
I would assume it’ll be avaliable in a patch so I can buy the game and add it on to that?
Hello Sylon! Welcome to Doki!
Yes, it will be available in patch form. Be sure to purchase either the Original or Full Voice version so that the patch works correctly. I hope you enjoy it!
i LOVE doki funsub. ill donate .. 🙂
thets all i can help .. ;_;
Hey, Holo, if you happen to be paying attention to these posts, there’s another issue with CLANNAD that likely needs to be addressed.
Usually, unless you have the actual CD, you would not normally be able to play without having to re-mount the ISO file repeatedly. To not do so is what usually causes the 2100 and 1301 error codes. As some can guess, it can get annoying, so what I suggest is that not only do we distribute the language patch, but we also need to distribute the NoDVD patch for the game. If you need it, I can send it to you when you’re about to release.
I don’t know much about the Clannad Portable engine version but there a way to insert the translated seen files in it or isn’t compatible and need a severe reedition?
Glad to see Tomoyo’s out. Can’t wait for Clannad to be done so I can play both!
It is fitting for an angel to play the greatest visual novel of all time…
This is a rather dramatic and endearing moment to hear the news that Clannad will finally have a final patch. Ever since having met with Planetarian all the way back in ’05, and having been introduced to KEY and Visual Novels, I have never found a story that I loved more than Clannad; I’ve followed it for the numerous years, and I had been more than eager to play it when the initial script had been finished around ’08, iirc.
It’s a really heartwarming feeling I get when I look upon this with love, nostalgia, and this exciting feeling that the project I had been watching and following for several years will final meet its fruition.
Thank you doki subs; people from BT and everyone else who worked on it.
Hurrah!
I feel the same way, Halcyon. This story has come a long way. It’s nice to know it’s finally almost complete.
Just curious about the original patch, I’ve been playing with it for a while now (about half a year 😛 that game is confusing) anyway so far, besides for a few minor to kind of annoying bugs it doesn’t seem too unplayable, is there a point where the game turns into complete Japanese?
Yes, while in others the English is poor & needs editing. The areas with Japanese are minimal and difficult to get to, which is why most people don’t notice that they are untranslated.
Will there be a text document of the translation that could be used for ports of the game?
Internally, yes. Whether it will be posted or not, I can’t say.
I really hope it does go public, as I have it waiting to play on PS3.
Why do Tomoyo After when you still have Clannad to finish? The lack of updates for this and the presence of updates for Tomoyo After is just questionable.
Hi DarkFireBlade25. Tomoyo After was the first project Doki took on, and therefore was the first one they were able to finish. The storied Clannad Translation Project was passed onto Doki about one year after Doki’s work started on Tomoyo After.
At this point, Doki’s VN Dept. will continue working on Tomoyo After and Little Busters! simultaneously. As these projects come to a close, both project teams will combine efforts to complete Clannad’s final translation & edit.
Hello,
Can anyone tell me what is the difference between CLANNAD visual novel Full Voice and ME?
Why hello Tomoyo!
Shouldn’t you know the answer to that question? You were in both games.
You just wait and think about that for awhile.
Really, think about it.
Poor Tomoyo. Starring in two games must have made you a bit fatigued. Fine, I’ll help you out. =)
Really, there’s not too much of a difference between the two, at least from a playability standpoint. ME runs on newer Windows OS, and has a settings change to allow for improved graphics (best for TVs). Other than that, there are some coding changes, but nothing changed from one version to another in terms of storyline.
Thank you Clannad Man! You know. I haven’t played the ME, but if this patch from doki will work on ME, i am gonna play on ME. If not, i will still play again with this patch! I love Clannad =)
Hasn’t Clannad Full Voice already been translated? Or are you working on another version? If so, what version would you consider the best?
They are several bgs with the original. For example sometimes Nagisa Would call me Tomoya in Jap or worse still SCL(insert random no. here)
Hi Kevin. The last patch from Baka-Tsuki’s team is the best at this point in time. The project originally transferred from The Waffle House / Dango Daikazoku to Baka-Tsuki to Doki, with Baka-Tsuki’s project leaders joining Doki’s VN Division. The patch is certainly readable, though there are a handful of things still left untranslated as well as some editing issues to take care of.
The final, complete & edited version of Clannad should be released upon the completion of Tomoyo After & Little Busters! Ex. Look forward to it!
I’m losing sleep over whether to play the existing translation, wait for this one, or rewatch the anime adaptation. Do you even comprehend my suffering… DO YOU!?
I’ve resisted playing the VN ever since I stumbled upon the announcement in June, and the lack of updates makes Fuko cry. Is there any idea of an estimated completion date among the slaves?
Helloelloelloelloelloelloelloello.
You ask the good people of this community if we understand your pain? Well let me say, of all the people of this realm, I, the Clannad Man, do! And trust me when I say it is a torment we all must bear bravely and with patience.
Perhaps it will make you feel better to know that the VN Teams are very eager to combine their efforts to complete Clannad with perfection, once and for all. Clannad is revered by its fans, and Doki has great respect for the groups that have worked on the project thus far. However, the update to Tomoyo After and the completed Little Busters! Ex patch will arrive first.
Please take care with Fuko, and stick around for awhile. Perhaps you’ll even spot her appearance in Tomoyo After, someday… ^_^
My game is now in shipping. yay! i was going to just download the patch that already exists, but I heard there were problems with it. What is wrong with it? I want to know if I should start the game or wait. Thank you 😀
You should wait for the complete patch if you want the best experience, as there are several issues with the current one. : ) As for what these issues are, just read Madoka’s post above on this page, and Clannad Man’s response to him, and you’ll get several examples.
Happy Holidays!
I was wondering how things are going for you and the patch.
Where can we check for future updates?
Thank you for time, and good luck!
Well, as Clannad Man has already mentioned, what is being worked on right now is Tomoyo After and Little Busters, by two seperate teams, simultaneously. Once the final patches for those are done and released (which will still be a while from now), both teams will work on Clannad together. As such, there isn’t really much to report as far as progress goes on Clannad. If there is anything in particular to report though, we will let you know. I’ll do my best to answer any questions in this thread, but outside of that, we won’t be giving out constant weekly or monthly updates at the moment unless there’s something in particular to report, as we simply wouldn’t have anything to report a lot of the time if we did.
Thank you for responding, Rokudaime.
I was able to play and finish Tomoyo After, thanks to your English patch.
I greatly appreciate the team’s works and have confidence that you will succeed with all your projects.
Take care!
Thank you, your support is appreciated, and I’m glad you liked the patch! ^_^ The team is still working hard, so like you, I’m confident that the future patches for all 3 VN’s will come out well when they are released! ^_^
Oooooh I’m dyin’! I’m dyin’!! I can’t wait this out. I’m gonna learn japanese and play the ps3 version before this comes out, at this rate! Though, it’ll be worth it.
Yup, there is no reason not to learn Japanese, regardless of when the patch comes out, since there are a ton of other cool stuff out there that is in Japanese only. 😉 If you managed to learn the language, a whole new world would open up to you. So if you have the motivation for it, I would say go for it! ^^ Personally I’m planning on attempting to learn it at some point.
Breaking news (for those that didn’t know already anyway, like me): Visual Arts is apparently working on an official Little Busters! EN translation for iOS, and have already released one for Planetarian. 😀 https://itunes.apple.com/app/planetarian-dream-little-star/id474121500 http://www.product.co.jp/iapp/
It seems it’s only the SS sidestories of LB so far though. But I have hope.
For those interested, have a look at Clannad Man’s bottom post here for the latest update: http://doki.co/2012/09/22/tomoyo-after-english-patch-v1/#comments
