Doki’s VN Division to complete the CLANNAD VN English Translation Project

To the members of the Doki Legion and the worldwide ‘Key’ Kazoku,

It is my utmost pleasure to officially announce the undertaking of an unprecedented project.  At the urging of fans and after careful consideration by the Baka-Tsuki Translation Team led by Polarem, it has been agreed upon that the completion of the CLANNAD Visual Novel English Translation Project, including all remaining translations, editing work, and associated checks, will henceforth be entrusted to Doki’s Visual Novel Division.  It is both an honor and a privilege to serve as the anchor to arguably the most noteworthy VN translation project ever undertaken.

As many of you are no doubt aware, the CLANNAD VN English Translation Project has been underway for years, having been started in 2005 as a one man project and eventually evolving to encompass many noteworthy names in fansubbing.  The effort put fourth by those comprising the “Drama Club / Dango Daikazoku” (演劇部 / だんご大家族) including TheWaffleHouse, Sprocket-Hole Subs, and Baka-Tsuki, has spawned a legion of Clannad fans around the world.  Though these groups’ ultimate effect on Clannad fandom cannot be precisely quantified, one would be hard-pressed to find a larger, equally passionate collection of fans than those of the aforementioned series.  Such fans deserve a final, properly edited, complete translation patch to satisfy their devotion.  That is exactly what they are going to get.

As with Tomoyo After, as well as the prior trustees of the CLANNAD VN Translation Project, the game will not be provided along with the translation patch.  The single task of the Doki VN Division is to develop translations of the utmost quality for the games it works on.  Due to the zeal exuded by the worldwide community in regard to Japanese culture, precise & picturesque translations of associated works, and of Key works in general, anything less than perfection in regard to this undertaking will be deemed unacceptable.  With a highly talented, enthusiastic team in place, and as the final translation project I shall personally oversee, we promise to make every effort to not only produce the preeminent (and first truly complete) Clannad translation patch, but to have it be the gold standard for all such translation projects to follow. Naysayers be warned, you will be eating your words.

Thus far, invitations to work on the project have already been accepted by some specific, talented individuals who have shown an interest in the project’s success. While the size and capabilities of the VN Team are plenty sufficient to complete the work expected of them, they could always use some additional help. Holo encourages anyone able and willing to translate or do editing (text, photoshop, video, quality check) to stop by #doki-recruits and send him a message at holo@doki.co. If you have significant time constraints or feel your work ethic is inadequate to maintain a set schedule, I would suggest that you instead support Doki through your words of thanks. The support received by the community is noted and is a significant driving force for why the VN Team (as well as the rest of Doki’s Staff) contributes their time toward causes they find worthwhile. As always, I personally appreciate your support and thank everyone who has offered encouragement to us.

Be prepared, Clannad fans.  Swan songs are always the sweetest.

Looking forward on the release… I hope I can play it more when I get one…

  • Hiki

Interesting. Though I’m sure most anyone who cares about the Clannad has played it years ago by now. Nevertheless, there are those who haven’t and those who have yet to experience the joy of Clannad altogether, so good for you guys to finish this up.

    • Just because someone may have played through the game doesn’t mean that they won’t want to play it again to extract the complete experience out of it. With ~After Story~ needing some big time edits, why pass up the chance to re-read the best part?

  • OtakuMage

Looking forward to Tomoyo After. I’ve been a huge Key fan since I first watched Kanon 2006, have seen Clannad and After Story and played the entire VN, so getting to finish the a piece of the only story since I was 10 to make me cry (from happiness and sadness) from watching the same scene over and over again. By far my favourite anime/VN and I will treasure the story and its lessons for the rest of my life. *starts humming Dango Daikazoku*

  • Rawr

Good luck with your Clannad stuff Clannad Man.

You probably forgot who I am but I called you the god of key stuff ages back lol. Using this name now as I’ve used before in the cbox, as someone is using the me name I used and has done for months as I havent bothered with anime stuff much lol

    • Believe it or not, I remember you Rawr. Funny how quickly things can change, eh? Cbox peeps all the way! =P

      • Rawr

        Hurray 😛

I don’t use the cbox anymore though and haven’t for months, looking at it now I don’t really know anyone using it who’s online at the moment..

Anyway how are you doing Clannad Man? Already said congrats before but nice to see you have a position of power here, couldn’t of gone to a better person 🙂

i cannot wait for Tomoyo After to be translated, been playing and watching Key-related media for years. gotta love Clannad,

  • akoaysmurf999

manly tears were shed on this day :’)

    • Tears of joy, I hope. Just don’t shed too many, or you won’t have any left over for when Tomoyo After comes out!

      • akoaysmurf999

It’s definitely tears of joy :’)

Really, I was so glad that Doki Fansubs took in Tomoyo After and began translating the game. Then months later you guys decided to finish the translation project for Clannad which, i suppose, was the trigger for me to leave a reply. I’m not exaggerating or anything, but really I’m so happy. :’) *grabs tissue*

I really gotta express my gratitude to doki’s VNTL team, THANK YOU SO MUCH! for this wonderful news. Best of luck to you guys!

  • shuu

correct me if i’m wrong, but isn’t there already an english patch with voices for the clanand VN?

    • Random passerby

Yeah that true!I got the clannad VN full voice via torrent .The english was also patch!

    • Several partial patches have been released with large amounts of the game translated. However, the previous tennants always had the game translations as ‘close to complete’ as opposed to ‘complete’. Furthermore, there is still much editing that needs to be done, as well as image translations and other unseen, background changes.

  • Hyper

Glad to hear this. I asked my friend to buy a copy of CLANNAD FV for me around the time it released. It is still collecting dust to this day, as I intend to play it with a 1.0 version of the patch. Hopefully this will come true soon. Good luck to you and your team. May this saga of CLANNAD translation finally come to an end. 🙂

  • Nacchan

Always Awesome Doki, Always Awesome! 😀

  • phunixid

Congrats and Thank You Doki Fansubs

  • eworm

This is the post no other post on the Internet will top, until the release post, which will not be topped by anything ever.

    • You know what Key should do? A crossover! YEAH, a crossover! Can you imagine characters from Clannad meeting up with characters from Tomoyo After? I mean, think of the possibilities…

A good time was had by all!

Mmmhm. Eh? What? Don’t tell me its been done before! Lies!

  • Lupin

    Dear Clannad Man,

It was delightful to read the news you’ve reported, and with such penmanship!
I wish you and your companions the best of luck with this endeavour and am looking forward to your production. Clannad is a great story and deserves the attention, as does the rest of Key productions.

I hope that this is the start of more things to come from Doki.

    Your servant,
    Arsene Lupin

    • Dear Professor Lupin,

I am flattered by your tasteful comment regarding me and Doki’s Visual Novel Division. We will endeavor to improve the translation as much as possible to maximize the amicability of the game-play experience for all involved. As for my own personal diction, I find nothing the matter with introducing the world of the internet with finely articulated speech. Yes, yes. Indubitably!

      Sophisticated Snob

Ha ha ha~! Really though, I’m glad you’re looking forward to the patch! As for how I write, it just comes out that way. I hope it doesn’t make anyone think I’m trying to speak down to them. On the contrary, I’m trying to share in the joy with everyone! Its a cool time to be a Clannad fan! =D

  • Onyx

Very much looking forward to this. Much obliged!

  • Smelvertising

Since there’s nothing out there for the Memorial Edition, and it’s the only one really available for purchase… will that version be patchable? I hope so!

Anyway, thanks for the GREAT news and keep up the great work.

  • BTA

Since I really loved Clannad, I’m really happy the patch is being improved so more people can enjoy it! It’s a really great game, but the translation definitely has some problems near the end. Thank you for making an effort to clean it up!

But, err, is there any plan to work on the Tomoyo After ME at some point? Especially since that’s never been patched and the ME is the easiest version to purchase at this point. Don’t get me wrong; I’m incredibly grateful that you guys are releasing a patch for TA at all, even more so than most since Tomoyo’s route was one of my favorites! But it seems that there’s a lot more content in the ME (and it’s also the version I own), so I was wondering if you’re thinking of doing that sometime down the line.

    • Oh yes, BTA, the patch is being improved and the translation problems near the end shall be fixed. As I just mentioned to Smelvertising (see above), Doki’s capabilities in that regard are currently limited, though it will be considered if there is enough of a push from the fans of the project. No promises though.

  • Roc Shingo

Since I fall under the ‘significant time constraints’ I will show my support by saying thank you for taking up this endeavour. I pray for your success in achieving the perfection you seek and that it be done in a timely manner, with little or without incident.

    Sincerely,
    Roc Shingo

  • AAA

This is amazing! I wish I could help out with something, but unfortunately I’m just an engineering student with no expertise in Japanese or graphic design… So I’ll just say “Ganbare!”

  • miichan19

is the english patch can use with clannad after story psp?

    • I think you’re talking about the PSP game release to supplement Clannad which was later included on the Xbox 360 release. Regardless, the VN Team is working on versions for PC only. Sorry.

  • -Regret-

Thank you Doki! Good work and godspeed to you guys! xD

    • You’re quite welcome, Regret. No puns this time! XD

      • -Regret-

Ahahaha! I don’t need to pun.. you already know that I’m ALWAYS devoted to you.. Good luck and godspeed to you!!! Don’t forget to entertain us and make us feel at home here! And beat them all in the Top Posters!!! xD (sorry again for my bad english)… XD

  • Frediloc

You just made my day. Words cannot express how glad I am to hear you guys have picked this up to finish it. I’m so looking forward to both of your completed releases!!!

  • L.L

First, I want to thanks your hardworking, and I’m very looking forward to the releases.
But briefly, are you gonna make English patch for CLANNAD and Tomoyo after or only Tomoyo after?

    • Danyo

Tomoyo after they almost finished, it’ll be released the 20th july, this post means they’ll take up clannad’s VN translation after releasing tomoyo after, to finally finish the patch that has been worked on for so long, with the quality a key VN deserves 🙂

    • Fully completed English patches will be made for both Tomoyo After and Clannad, in respective order. It is as Danyo says.

  • Warrof

Just make the puzzle a little easier to figure out when you anounce the release date.

Speaking of which are you guys gonna start from scratch or are you going to work up from the patch that has already been done?

To lazy to look for the info.

    • I have some people telling me to make it harder, others easier… what to do?? ~(^-^)~

Unlike with Tomoyo After, where we carried over only a small section of the translation for various edits and checks, that will not be the case with the Clannad VN. Much of the early work has already been translated quite well and only needs minor editing. The further one gets along in the VN, however, problems begin to arise in regard to the quality of translations along with some other issues. I commend the Baka-Tsuki team and its predecessors for all it has done to create a top quality translation of Clannad; we’re here to finish the job.

  • olio

I’m really happy to hear about this. I’m a very big fan of Clannad and AS. I’ve also read much of the VN, but I’ve found the text, interface, and general flow of the provided translation to be rather lackluster. A Tomoyo After translation as well? That’s simply amazing. Needless to say, this is the best news I’ve heard in a while, and I’m really grateful for your continued efforts. I hope everything goes smoothly, as I’ll be hungrily looking forward to the finished product. Good luck with the ambitious project!

    • Your points regarding the flow of the current patch is exactly one of the reasons why Doki is taking a look at it. I sincerely hope it is all you hope for it to be, and thank you for your wishes of good luck!

  • Rokudaime

I think I might faint from too much joy! *manly tears of joy* <'3 This is defenitely of the happiest days in my life! Clannad Man and the team of Doki’s Visual Novel Division, you guys are incredibly awesome, and my heroes! ^^ Really happy now that I haven't played the game yet. I've had it lying on my computer with the unfinished patch for quite some time. Both this and Tomoyo After…man, an overwhelming ammount of awesome in such a short time. ^^

Some folks here mentioned the ME Edition. I understand if Doki won't cover that one, but is there content in it that is not in the Standard and Full Voice versions? I wasn't aware. What about the ME Editions for Air, Kanon, and Tomyo After? Also, please tell me that the patch you guys will release will at least cover the Full Voice version? The voice addition makes a world of difference after all. Finally, is there any chance you guys will pick up the rest of Air as well? At some point? Because that was never finished by anyone either. I know it's not as good a game as Clannad and Kanon, but still.

Oh, and Clannad Man, keep this up, and you'll reach first place under Top Posters in no time with no trouble at all! ;D

    • Wow, that’s a lot of good karma you’re providing us! One of the happiest days of your life? SWEET! I was hoping for perhaps a notable weekday. Not bad!

With Tomoyo After and Clannad being released one after another, perhaps the Doki VN Team is serving the role of Suzumiya Haruhi’s SOS Brigade, “overloading the world with fun”! (Hey, I’m allowed to dream too!)

Unlike with Tomoyo After, the ME Edition of Clannad does not have any notable content updates outside of increased compatibility and some graphical enhancements (it is a 2D VN, so its not as if a graphical enhancement makes a ton of difference). Patches for both the original version of Clannad as well as Full Voice will be created. As for future VN projects, one at a time is plenty for the VN Team. Stay tuned!

Finally, getting to that top posting spot will likely still be difficult, as Holo has well over 1000 posts to his name if I remember correctly. I’m content with just replying to (virtually) everyone who posts here. 😉

  • DragonX
