    Special thanks 🙂

Thank you for the timely releases of this thoroughly enjoyable series.
If I may ask, which Thursday show is next to be subbed? C or Aria?

  • Walo

I’m falling in love with Mi- *trigger clicks* *nothing happens* *run*

    thanks for the hard work!

Is the title supposed to be “Menma is everyone” or “Menma and everyone” or “Menma with everyone”?

    • ZeroYuki

Minna to Menma (みんなとめんま)= Everyone and Menma. Everyone with Menma is acceptable too, but everyone is Menma is just nonsense.

    • Mimori

That’s odd, in my translation it was ‘Everyone and Menma’. It must have gotten muddled up somewhere along the line. Sorry! D:

  • martinez

looks like u use batch categories for ur 480p XD

  • Jintan

You call that slow? I just woke up and found that you have already released this ep, and that just made my day. ^_^

    Thanks a lot.

    aye aye, Cap’n.

  • This episode blew me away, just like the many before that. If this is not picked up stateside for release I will have to eat airmail costs and order dvd’s from amazon jp! The last 3 or four minutes were so good. I know I will want a second season, even if there won’t be one. (Probably not, right?).

This is the first episode of Ano Hana I have watched from Doki and I got to say it was a pretty huge disappointment. The subs are just so awkward. I can understand whats going on but it doesn’t feel natural at all. GG seems to be doing a much cleaner job all around with this series.

    • A.Crush

Some people want a translation, some people want a general english explanation of what’s being expressed. Can’t please everyone, that’s why there are different subs groups with different ways of doing it.

      • Anon

Quit being such a ignorant fanboy. A translation is expression of the meanings of words across language. There translations for a lot of other shows are great, that is the reason I am subscribed to there RSS feed. I just skipped through it again and here is some awkward phrases I came across. http://imageshack.us/g/191/dokianohimitahananonama.jpg/
“Me, too. it’s sort of like all the strength has been sapped out of me”, “So I thought I’d see Menma home first”, “Yukiatsu crashed.”, “Menma is Everyone”, “but can you give me a hand with some of the more simple things?”, “I think it would have been much cuter if we’d have gone with something more red”. Now how often do you see native English speakers talk like this?

        • Holo

Editor should have changed “more red” to “redder”?

        • Mimori

I agree with ‘more simple’ to ‘simpler’. ‘More simple’ isn’t wrong, but it’s unnatural and ugly. That was a stupid error on my part. ^_^ Also, I agree that perhaps my style is generally a bit stiff, and doesn’t always flow nicely. That being said, I must take issue with some of the specific lines you highlighted:

Sapped out of me – Really don’t see what’s wrong with this phrase. I’ve used it before when I’m speaking, and I’ve heard it used by others.
Menma is everyone – Not my mistake. See above.
See Menma home – http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/see+to. Perhaps it’s more common in usage here in Britain than elsewhere or something, but this is totally natural spoken English to me, and the way I would always express the idea that I’m going to escort someone somewhere.
Yukiatsu crashed – I actually really like this translation, and don’t see what’s wrong with it at all. In Japanese she says he ‘broke’, using a verb most commonly used to describe the breakdown of complex machinery. And it’s a comment on his sudden wild, mad behavior, like when a computer crashes, and starts behaving crazily. It’s strange that you should highlight this line, as I actually thought it was a really good way of expressing the idea.
More red – This was originally ‘with more red’. And there is a difference. She’s not talking about a redder shade, but rather something with more red parts to it. I put my hands up and say it was my fault for not making that clear to the editor, though.

I don’t know but I think that ranting and mentioning another fansub group in the same post sounds like trolling. Especially when said group is notorious for making trollsubs. Of the references above only the “more simple” one has some merit. If you want to criticize something about a sub, you don’t have to act like a troll to get your point across. Doki staff are very nice people and will listen to critics without fighting. This is not horriblesubs or any other troll site like that.

          > Now how often do you see native English speakers talk like this?

Native speaker here (American, to be specific), so let’s see:

          1) “Me, too. it’s sort of like all the strength has been sapped out of me”
No problems here. I assume the failed capitalization was your own.

          2) “So I thought I’d see Menma home first”
Sounds perfectly normal to me. Honestly, what would YOU have said? Granted, “see someone home” does feel a tiny bit…(what’s a good word for “not something you young whippersnappers might say these days”? Oh yeah, “old-fashioned”)…but it sounds fine to my old ears.

          3) “Yukiatsu crashed.”
I didn’t like this line. I understand what Mimi said about the underlying Japanese word, but I would have edited it as “Yukiatsu snapped.” (At which point all the literal freaks would have jumped on me, I’m sure, so I’m glad I wasn’t editing this!)

          4) “Menma is Everyone”
I’m pointing the fickle finger of fail at the typesetter. It’s actually translated correctly in the script (a comment), but it suffered…mutation…at some point.

          5) “but can you give me a hand with some of the more simple things?”
I’m 100% with you on this one. (See? I’m not being completely argumentative.)

          6) “I think it would have been much cuter if we’d have gone with something more red”.
There is a fine line of nuance between “redder” and “more red.” Normally you wouldn’t use it in, say, describing the hue of a stop sign. But when it comes to fashion, I’ve definitely heard people talk like this.

Bottom line: 1 silly mistake, 1 edit fail, 1 personal preference, and 3 no-problems. Hope I didn’t come off as too big of a douche, but rather just the right amount of a douche.

    • Mimori

Aw, sorry I couldn’t win you over. ^_^ While I’ve been studying Japanese for a long time, I’m relatively new to actually translating, so there will probably be times where things don’t flow as nicely as they could. I feel like I’m becoming more confident with every week, though, so hopefully in time I’ll be able to produce translations that are more pleasing to you. Thanks for the feedback, even if it wasn’t positive!

      • A.Crush

Your translations are fine. You can’t please everyone. Weeaboos who don’t know much Japanese just want to nitpick. A good fansub ISN’T an explanation or interpretation of what’s being said in terms of native English…it’s a translation of the Japanese using English. There is a difference.

The nature of fansubs also allows for some errors and personal differences.

But mentioning another fansub group on a blog, especially as being “better” in terms of translations, is definitely trolling.

I like Mimori’s translations as-is. There’s always room for improvement, though, and I’m sure she’ll get even better doing more and learning more Japanese in the process.

        Keep up the excellent work.

I think the problem is that Americans use such a simple form of English compared to the British that they struggle to digest any sentence that is remotely complex. The only line that I felt was awkward was:

“I think it would have been much cuter if we’d have gone with something more red”

Mainly because it’s the full form of the sentence, and it’s very unusual to not condense that to be “I think it would’ve been much cuter with more red/something more red”.

I haven’t used Doki before this episode, but given their speed compared to the others (UTW taking over 12-18 hours per episode is now the standard.), but whilst watching the episode I didn’t feel any awkwardness at all besides that one line, and I’ll be using you guys until the end now because of the speed.

    • A.Crush

I haven’t found that British English subbers do any better or worse than American English subbers, although I do agree about the form difference. Then again maybe more British English subs are the ones that are better and I just never noticed they were British.

Mainly it’s just that some people prefer the more literal translations from Japanese, with the complexity that is sometimes inherent in the Japanese form of what’s being said, and some people just want a general idea of what’s going on in the most basic English possible.

Personally I find dumbed-down subs annoying, especially when you can tell that the subs aren’t really a good translation of what’s being said, even if it’s only because it’s a common phrase or something you’ve heard before.

Really the issue is solved by different groups doing subs and people getting to choose the ones they like the best. But I guess there will always be trolls trying to push their view that the kind they like is the ones the other groups should be doing.

        >Then again maybe more British English subs are the ones that are better and I just never noticed they were British

i think it’s because many countries that don’t speak English natively will prefer British….just like me
