From Up on Poppy Hill (Blu-Ray)

From Up on Poppy Hill

Had hoped to release it much sooner (Loomy all “soon™ bro!”) than this but it needed a fair bit of (stalling) work. Also, probably do Kiki when it is released next month.

1080 and 720’s are 5.1 flac. 480 is 2.0 AAC.

loomy: So is her name mero or umi 😡
loomy: MAL says Umi, they also call her Umi, although Mero is her nickname … sort of …
loomy: which doesn’t make any sense … but then again it’s ghibli … they also have flying castles, talking pigs, witch deliveries, little borgers and dirty stream gods <.< ... loomy: ┐( ̄ー ̄)┌ loomy: maybe somebody can explain <.< ...

Edit: Apparently I didn’t mux the main font. Grab it here if you need it.

So soon. I didn’t expect this one before a few more months.

  • Rawr

Thanks Ixlone, honestly hadn’t of heard of this movie before today, will download and check it out 🙂

  • Geese1

Like Rawr I had never heard of this film before, but a quick trip to Wikipedia fixed all that and it sounds like an interesting title. I’ll be downloading this when I get home from work tonight.

Thanks for all your hard work!!

  • Joey

    Thanks!

I thought Mero comes from the French “mer” that stands for “sea”. And her name, Umi also means “sea”.

So they are just saying her name in French

    • loomy

Is it also pronounced “melu” in french?

      • Joey

No, but as we know, you cannot have an ‘R’ at the end of a word in Japanese, so they usually put an ‘o’ after a foreign word. ‘Fight-o’, for example.
Then ‘r’ and ‘l’ are constantly mixed up, no surprise there.

        IMHO, of course.

      • Meneldal

It’s not surprising they pronounce it like shit and compared to many other french words it’s quite decent. (coming to my mind is the Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu insert song Le Secret that became re sukure and i never thought it was french when i heard it even knowing the song’s title)

  • I also hadn’t heard of this one. Rather surprising considering what a Studio Ghibli fan I am. I knew Gorō Miyazaki was working on it, but I hadn’t heard it had been released. I wasn’t a big fan of Gorō’s first work Gedo Senki: Tales from Earthsea. I believe that the copyright issues with releasing it in the US are no longer a problem, but I still hadn’t heard anything about Disney releasing it here. Speaking of Disney why is GKIDS releasing From Up On Poppy Hill? I thought that Studio Ghibli and Disney had some sort of agreement. I can’t imagine John Lasseter being happy about it. He is a major Hayao Miyazaki fan, as well as his friend.

Now all I need is Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki and my perfect double feature night will be complete! (grin)

Majo no Takkyuubin aka Kiki’s Delivery Service is still my all time favorite Ghibli film. I never get tired of watching it.

So Holo and Ixlone, heard anything about The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki? I still haven’t found it playing anywhere in the US, nor have I seen a BR-DVD release in Japan. The latest movie by Mamoru Hosoda, who also gave us Summer Wars, which it beat in the box office, and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,. Yeah, I want to see it.

    • Teto2k

I saw The Wolf Children in October. JAL had it on their inflight entertainment in October with English subs. It’s worth watching. I doubt there will be any bluerays for it for some months still. Poppy Hill was in theaters in Japan summer of 2011 and I didn’t see any releases subbed until summer 2012 (Thora released this back in July).

      • If it is playing on Japan Airlines with English subs, how come nobody even has a RAW of it out yet?

It must be one of those agreements where the movie distribution company releases films to airlines like they do to movie theaters.

To the best of my knowledge it still hasn’t been released to the public. (sigh)

        • Rokudaime

Hmm, if it’s made by the guy who made The Girl Who Leapt through time I’m gonna have to check it out. Love that movie! Though I didn’t fancy Summer Wars all that much tbh.

          • Rokudaime

Just noticed I’ve had The Wolf Children on my “to watch” list for a while, but forgot about it. ( ^_^’) It sounds very promising based on its AniDB entry. I really want to watch it as well. Hope somebody will sub it one day…

    • Rawr

I’m all for more Ghibli :3

Love these movies, I’m sure more will come out here soon.

  • Calintz

Any news on “30-sai no Hoken Taiiku?”

    • Rawr

Not following this show but have just checked and Doki have released the entire series on Blu Ray, I also googled and couldn’t find any mention of additional episodes. Hope that helps.

      • Zdm321

The BD Specials are still being worked on (probably because there’s a metric fuck-ton of typesetting).

        • Calintz

I just know that the batch hasn’t been releases yet and I’m eagerly waiting for it is all.

Thanks for letting me know Zdm, I can understand the montage of typesetting being a pain in the ass.

        • Rawr

Ah, couldn’t find reference to them in the typical places, it just said 12 episodes and no specials. Sounds someone needs to keep these anime reference sites up to date lol

  • Rokudaime

    Thank yooooouuuuuu!!! FINALLY!!! X3

  • Elvin21

Wow! If its Studio Ghibli, it must be good… Thanks for the release! 🙂

  • Marcel

Thanks for the release Doki, as always!!

  • OMG

did anyone check to see what the flags she raised at the beginning mean

the ones at like the 2 minute mark

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_maritime_signal_flags

hmm i get the feeling studio ghibli didn’t do its research unless some can prove me wrong

  • Rokudaime

Man, your version was so much better than THORA’s! 😀 Thanks a bunch! Also, I’m really happy to hear that you will be doing Kiki! 😀

    • jalla

u retard or what? o_O their subs and THORA are practically the same script with minor changes here and there. I dont see any major improvement over THORA.

      • Other than the 40+ lines that weren’t in the official TL? Among other things.

      • Rawr

        @jalla

Don’t be an ass, he’s one of the nicest people on here. And has proven himself to be smart enough, smarter than you anyway.

        • jalla

ok, if smart = crawls up your ass then I agree. as I wrote – minor changes here and there, but most of the script is the same as THORA. which means most of the shit stayed too.

          • loomy

So give us insight into this great shit that has befallen all of us in these bad no-go subs that were provided by us, so that we might learn from it.

Or could it be that you aren’t able to provide any facts behind those baseless accusations? Nah, can’t be <.< …

          • Rawr

            @jalla

I stand by my original comment, you haven’t posted anything valid, or anything that would suggest you were smarter than him, you seem to just have an attitude problem and need to like, stop. You’re doing yourself no favours here.

            @loomy

Don’t worry Loomy, absolutely nothing wrong with this movie, there’s always 1 person that complains about anything, anywhere, he’s just that person. You and everyone else did a good job 🙂

            I suggest ignoring him.

          • Rokudaime

Like Ixlone said, there are several untranslated lines in THORA’s version that are translated in Doki’s version, something I noticed right away, since I’m a perfectionist when it comes to subs. In addition they have karaoke for all the insert songs, unlike THORA’s version which have none. Maybe instead of being a rude little dumbass against people for stating the obvious fact that Doki’s version is more complete, you should have your eyes checked, since, apparently, you’re blind. ┐( ̄ー ̄)┌ And throwing around baseless accusations with non-excistent facts to back them up just makes you look like an idiot. Also, I have a University degree, how about you? Want to continue this dance? I think you’d better not. In fact I think you probably better just crawl away while you can, before you embarass yourself further. 😉 Good day!

          • Yeah, don’t “embarass” yourself!

          • Rawr

            @Rokudaime

Lol, anyway I think he’l be back, he seems to be on a one man crusade. Just a shame he felt the need to kick up a fuss for no reason, I mostly commented to say he was wrong for being an ass towards you, and also because there was nothing wrong with the movie, infact for the first time in ages, I watched the thing whilst talking on the cbox, if you remember, when I made an account.

            Very fun movie 🙂

          • Rokudaime

            @Ix
Give me a break, I had just spent 12 hours straight working on my home-exam. 😛 If the only mistake I made in a long paragraph was miss one letter in a word, I think I did a pretty good job, managing to not make any more mistakes. 😛
            @Rawr
Don’t watch it WHILE talking on the cbox! 😛 It should be enjoyed fully in its entirety, not as part of a multitasking run. 😛

  • Index

How many movies Ghibli do in one year? There’s too many titles!

    • Index

      *there’re…..shit typo*

    • Rawr

Ghibli seem to do 1 movie every 2 years or so. And a lot of them do quite well in the boxoffice so they can afford to take their time mostly. It’s a shame they’re not as popular as Disney titles, because as far as story goes they’re actually a lot better in some cases.

Arietty for example cost Ghibli 23 million dollars to make, but it made 145 million. Must admit I’m not following Ghibli intently so some of these releases take me entirely by surprise lol

The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter is the next one out next year, I’m imagining logging on here around about this time next year to a surprise of seeing it for download lol

  • Haruya

Comment not related to the post, but…

I just wanted to know if you’re doing the BD versions of the Bungaku Shoujo OVAs?

  • spaark

Good stuff. Looking forward to Kiki ^^

  • xiaoshan

Thank you so much for this release Doki. Such a good film:)
will buy it as soon it becomes available in my region. <3

  • Rokudaime

To all you people who hadn’t heard of this movie until this release post: tsk, tsk. 😛

  • Paulchen

Wonderful film, so typical of Ghibli studios, but a little different than the norm – in other words brilliant. Way better than the Disney stuff – this actually has meaning and a story line which does not always end in a “Happy happy ending” like so much american stuff. The Americans have not taken over everything yet, thank goodness.

    • Rokudaime

I agree with almost everything you said, except the “and a story line which does not always end in a ‘Happy happy ending'” part. I have all 19 of Ghibli’s feature films, and among them, the only one which I consider to have an unhappy ending is “Grave of the Fireflies”. And I happen to like it that way. I prefer happy endings. 😛

  • Rokudaime

The one critique I have of your release of this show is of your decision to put “Umi” in the subs even when her friends adress her with her nickname, “Mero”. I believe in subs and speech matching when it comes to names. You could have just put in a TL note the first time “Mero” is used in the movie or something.

  • Unlimited

When playing this on Media Player Classic, the voices are all quiet while the music/sound effects are fine.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

    • Sounds like a local issue on your pc.

I’d suggest turning off windows sound enchancements or any other such things on any custom audio management software you use, such as a realtek HD audio.

  • Kenji

please seed From Up on Poppy Hill (1280×692 Hi10P BD FLAC)..

  • trumpet205

How did you get 5.1? Original BD release only comes with 5.0.

  • trumpet205

Just downloaded and checked. It is 5.0 audio. Must be a typo then.

  • Any

I compared your release with another one (Dubbed) and yours doesn’t have the studio ghibli logo in the beginning, also Wikipedia says the runtime is 92 mins but this is 90 mins.
Do you trim openings or credits ?
