Tomoyo After - English Patch v1

You can post error reports about the game itself here.

You can post errors in the scripts here.

Hello everyone! Approximately 17 months ago, I decided to expand into the area of Visual Novels, and take on Tomoyo After as our first project. Finally, we are able to present the completed patch to you. Thank you all for your patience! Many people have been involved in this project, and I would like to thank Clannad_Man for his leadership. If it wasn’t for him, who knows when we would have finished this project. I’d also like to thank Delwack for his role in leading after Clannad_Man became occupied with RL. Special mention to the translators Kuzu, NeWbY and egshady for persevering with this project. A full list of credits will be included with the readme.

Delwack has a few words to say on this release.

Greetings everyone! I’m Delwack, a relatively new addition to the Doki VN team. Before I get into some of the other details, just a few quick note on the patch itself. This patch executable is rather simplistic and it uses the default director TA is normally installed to. If you chose to install TA to a directory other than the default one, be sure to point the patcher to the right directory! Note that if you’ve played the game before in Japanese, the save games are not compatable with the English version. Please delete any files found in C:\KEY\智代アフター\SAVEDATA (default directory again) before installing this patch.

With that out of the way…
I joined when Doki absorbed the Clannad project, and offered to lend a hand with Tomoyo After. As with many projects, Doki’s first attempt at translation a visual novel with Tomoyo After has not gone as smoothly as we would have liked. A lot of work went not only into the text, but into getting all the things around it working properly. While we have worked hard to solve many issues, there are still outstanding issues both major and minor that we are looking to resolve. I’m here today to give you a flavor for some of the known issues and challenges that we are still looking to overcome.

Major issues:
Font selection: The default font used is MS Gothic (MS ゴシック) with bolding and shadows enabled. The font options are not currently functioning properly. Attempts to change the font will result in using the lowest quality, no-shadow, no bolding version of the selected font. It is not possible to revert back to the default font as set up without reinstalling the patch.

Line Overruns: Luckily the game doesn’t crash when a large chunk of text runs over the 3-lines allocated to it. It does, however, cause some odd corruption of the name tag box. This is likely an issue inside of rlbable, as this behavior doesn’t appear on other VNs that share the same resources.

Known Crash Issues: From the start-up screen, attempting to load a save on the first line of July 14th will crash the game.

Minor issues:
D&T line-overruns: The auto-line breaking used throughout the game doesn’t work properly for D&T. We are working on either fixing it or adding in manual line breaks.

D&T skill cut-ins: Minor display issues with 2 cut-in skills (uses an incorrect older style for the cutins.)

D&T item name inconsistency: There are a handful of item and skill images that are inconsistent with the text. Some of this is intentional, due to space limits, but we are still working on fixing all the inconsistencies.

D&T item puns: The bane of translation effort, there are a frightful number of puns with the item names and descriptions. Figuring them all out of half the battle, trying to properly convey them the other half.

Some system message titles still in JP: We’ve tried to catch everything, but there are some occasional system messages (like if you try to close the program through alt+f4) that are still in JP. These should not adversely affect your play experience.

Despite these issues, I hope you enjoy this patch, and look forward to the day when we release a final version.

And a few words from Clannad_Man.

Greetings Doki Legion, from your brother in arms, the Clannad Man.

What a journey this has been, eh? I don’t know about you, but from my perspective, it’s been a wild ride. With rapids. Several class five rapids. But, we got through them, together.
The release of this translation patch is something I think we’ve all been looking forward to for a long time. Sure, the patch isn’t entirely polished (yet), but to have even arrived at this stage is something I’ve had a difficult time wrapping my head around. We did it! And that, ladies and gents, means I have some heartfelt confessions to make.

I cannot begin to properly express my gratitude to the fine men and women who have worked on this project as members of the Doki Visual Novel Department. It has been a true joy to work with each and every one of you. I know better than anyone the extremes it took to co-ordinate everyone’s busy schedules together, but you stuck with it, even though I’m certain my many demands placed a burden on your shoulders. For your persistence, passion, and for the great service you have provided to the Key Kazoku as well as to Clannad Fans worldwide:

Thank you!

To the many people who worked on this project from its Baka-Tsuki days, kudos for setting the foundation and getting the ball rolling. Though I’m sure progress was not as forthcoming as you would have liked, my hope for you is that when you play through the patch, you’ll be able to relive your experiences volunteering at B-T, and gain a sense of pride from knowing your contributions will live on. For your ambition and vision:

Thank you!

I must give a mention to Holo and Dys for initially reaching out to me to assist with the project. Even though I resisted, you kept at it, and as a result I have been able to experience something I will cherish for the rest of my days. You have been respectful of my conditions and wishes, and have always been open to suggestions. For your service as diplomats:

Thank you!

Finally, to everyone who has supported the project since its inception… As the VN Team can attest, you’ve made the entire experience worthwhile. Sometimes all the motivation it took for the team to get going was a quick look at the main TA post to see all of the appreciation you showered upon them. Though not directly involved, the fans of the Tomoyo After Translation Project have played as large a role in the scheme of things as anyone. Even those from traditionally hostile groups have been cordial, and I respect them for that. It is due to the Doki Legion and Clannad Fans from around the world that this project was resurrected from its neglected state and raised to the position it’s at today. For everyone who has ever shown any interest in the project, the VN Team, or works from Key/Visual Art’s:

THANK YOU!!!

It is my sincere desire that everyone enjoys the patch and supports the great people over at Key/Visual Art’s by purchasing a version of the game. While of course I cannot force you to do so, providing some sort of financial support to Key will allow them to continue making great games for everyone to enjoy. I won’t preach, since many of you likely don’t want to hear it; just consider respecting their efforts in some way.
To conclude, here are the plans for the VN Division in the immediate future: work to polish the TA patch will continue, succeeded by efforts to translate the new portions found in the Memorial edition of the game, and finally followed by the final translations / edits for CLANNAD. Though my own role in this process is drawing to a close, I ask that you continue to show the amazing support to the people at Doki as you have done for me and the rest of the Visual Novel Division. Exciting times lie ahead, in each of our unique paths. Forging onward is where the fun really beings!

Be careful out there, folks. I’ll catch ya’ on the flip side.

Happy trails!

Hey guys, I’m just wondering, what’s the difference between the PC version and the Xbox, PS3 and PSP? I know there are some extra CGs in other versions, but what about the story? I assume they should be more or less the same with some fluff added.

    please, enlighten me.

    • phx

also, it would be awesome if someone can direct me to a place where I can view the extra CGs.

    • Rokudaime

Depends on which PC version you’re talking about. The Memorial Edition doesn’t just have new CG’s, it has lots of new textual content, in other words, more scenes, and more story. It also has voices, and the H is cut out. The 360, PS3, and PSP CS versions are the same as the PC ME Edition, I think, so it’s only the Standard PC (H) version that is really different. The PS2 version I’m unsure about, but I know it doesn’t have voices.

      • if i`m correct there should be CS edition on Xbox i wonder what different between Original, ME, and CS version?

        • Rokudaime

I already answered that…Like I just said, I believe the CS version is the same as the ME edition, except the PS2 one doesn’t have voices. And the differences between those and the Standard (Original) version are as I listed above.

    • Hi phx. The simplest explanation I can provide is as follows:

The PC version comes in several types: The original LE, ME, and CE Editions. The original limited edition has H-Scenes and is a fair amount shorter than the later versions. Both the Memorial and Consumer Safe Editions are very similar outside of the way the files are compiled, do not have H-Scenes, have full voice acting with Tomoya Okazaki, and are longer than the original. Technically the CE version is more advanced due to graphical capabilities, though gameplay is not effected.

The PS2 port of the game had the H-Scenes removed, added in the additional storyline, and reduced in-game flickering, but did not include other improvements. The PSP version is the first port of the CE Edition is is virtually identical to the PC version. The Xbox 360 version is a CE port with improved graphics options (improved light and shading effects can be toggled) and resolution. Naturally, achievements were also included in this version. The PS3 version was a limited edition release commemorating Visual Art’s 20th Anniversary; outside of controls and achievements, it is the same as the Xbox 360 version.

If you want to get a console port, I would personally suggest the Xbox 360 version because of availability, cost, and the updated features from other versions. However, any of the ME/CE versions should be adequate for non-H gameplay (my preferred type).

  • speaking of which, kyo wa (today) is tomoyo-chan birthday 😀 yay this is a day i have been waiting for long time 😀 so i will say, happy birth day, My Tomoyo 🙂

  • Sir Hammerlock

question here, I just downloaded the patch and I am wondering what to do next, is this the full VN or do I have to download that too?

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOMOYO SAKAGAMI! May your kicks be swift and ferocious for many years to come. =D

Also, best of luck finding a boyfriend; I hear this Okazaki fellow is rather infatuated with the Furukawas’ girl.

Hey, what do you say we go on a date with Kyou? I’m sure we can think of something we can all do together to celebrate your birthday…

    • Rokudaime

Clannad Man’s dream: Threesome with Tomoyo and Kyou. 😛 And I completely concur. <D

    • Silly Helen

      Oh, you sly Clannad Man you. Still, Tomoyo AND Kyou? I’d probably die from the awesome. ;_;

Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOMOYO~! May you always be the Chun Li-tastic awesome, awkwardly cute character we all know and love. :confetti:

Sorry that it’s late; had to do overtime at work. Why is that vein popping in your temple? I-I apologized! N-not the kick, please, I’ll compensate next year!

  • NanayaEmiya

    Seconded, otanjoubi omedetou Tomoyo!
    *heard the name Kyou*
    (Shuraba time!XD)

btw, my earlier post got buried on the previous page. So I’ll ask again: How to custom resize window mode of Tomoyo After?
    Details here:
    http://doki.co/2012/09/22/tomoyo-after-english-patch-v1/comment-page-9/#comment-45356

    • Rokudaime

Like I said, I’m pretty sure you can’t…Belive me, I’ve tried it a lot myself, to no avail…

      • NanayaEmiya

Is that so, I’m sorry for continuing my inquiry so obstinately in spite of the messages posted before. I get it, I’ll just have to deal with it. I won’t post another again related to this matter.
Anyways, thanks ‘The Sixth” for the reply.

Doki ppl – enjoy & peace!

        • CheshireNeko

Many VNs dont allow window resizing so your usually stuck at 800×600 or a ugly bloated fullscreen. In saying that there are some games which have more window options (eg Majikoi). Going further into it, having adjustable window size would complicate the set image sizes and dialogue boxes.

  • twdarkeh

I’d have to go with Tomoyo and Kotomi, personally. :3

  • VanENTerrier

Can someone here explain the ending? 🙁 been bugging me for awhile now…

    • Silly Helen

Go to the forum, mate. We’ve discussed it around there. Any spoilerish questions you may have and such, just ask them and we’ll explain.

  • Kuranado

Thank you Visual Novel Doki Team! I am really happy and satisfied with translation for Tomoyo After.
Looking forward for the Memorial Edition, I will wait for it forever!

  • NanayaEmiya

    Hi guys,

I don’t know if I understand this correctly so can someone explain this line to me:

“In order to complete the game entirely, the player must finish eight of the mini RPGs games called “Dungeons & Takafumis” which are available during certain scenarios as the player continues to play the game.”
(taken from the Information section of doki patch)

    • It means what it says.
You gotta finish “Dungeons & Takafumis” to complete the game entirely.

      • NanayaEmiya

Yes, I know that much, but whats bothering me is that ‘eight’ word there.
If I got this right, let say I’ve finish D&T eight times, then what reward awaits me?
I’ve finished D&T once (‘S’), is it worth finishing it 7 more times?

        • Hi there NanayaEmiya! The game is split up into multiple sections, or levels. Start playing it and it will begin to make more sense. Good luck!

          • NanayaEmiya

Thanks ClannadMan for the encouragement. I noticed that answering my previous questions will spoil lotsa excitement so let me rephrase it…
To digest what you’ve just said and to make things more sense, D&T doesn’t end in just one playthrough? Y/N
And finishing it 8 times means getting closer to 100%+ completion? Y/N
Thanks in advance again to whomever replies to this.

  • Sir Hammerlock

Having a few troubles with the patch, it wont allow me to set my font

    • Sir Hammerlock

Ok, I’ve busted through all the comments, and tried all the solutions to this problems and it all comes down to this; I do not have MS Gothic font, I do not have East Asian languages installed on my machine nor am I able to install them due to my lack of service pack 3 cd, and I’m just a general technotard. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      • Rokudaime

You can download both Service Pack updates and Language Packs from Microsoft’s webpages I believe.

        • Sir Hammerlock

Okay, that went out the window, I already have service pack three. And they do not have any updates for the language packs on their website, only documents stating about how they can be used and a tool for an embedded Microsoft machine.

(I apologize, I’ve noticed you’ve been getting annoyed with all these complaints and questions)

          • Rokudaime

Don’t worry, I’m calm and cool. Microsoft’s webpages do have downloads of Language Packs, but I see that they don’t have the East Asian languages that you need, so you are correct in that sense…And from what you’re saying you have Windows XP, and are trying to install the Language files you need, but you can’t because you don’t have the CD, correct? In that case, follow this method, it should work, since you have Service Pack 3 already pre-installed on your computer (if you can’t find the file they’re talking about, read the comments for further solutions on how to get it): http://www.voom.net/install-files-for-east-asian-languages-windows-xp

As for the MS Gothic font, give me your email, and I’ll send it to you, since I have it (if you don’t want to post it here for people to see, we could always arrange a time to meet in Doki’s IRC channel, if you know how to use that). Or, if you don’t want to share your email, you can probably find the font on the internet by just Googling for it, but be careful where you to attempt to download it from. There are several useless fake sites for it out there, and some could also potentially give you viruses.

Hope that helps, and let me know how it turns out, and if you want me to send the font or not. Cheers. 😉

  • twdarkeh

I know you’ve probably gotten tired of people asking, but any update on the ME patch? :3

    • Abcdqfr

I’d second that, but the answer’s probably going to be sparsely detailed only stating that it’s still underway or that the team is taking a rest.
      Which of course is fine.

  • PEANUT BUTTER

I appreciate all the hard work DOFIFANSUBS put into clannad/tomoyo after and any other projects they have done. Thank you.

  • Tomoyo

Thank you so much Doki VN Team!
I am grateful for the patch!
I heard VN Team is working on ME patch, I really happy to hear this.
Since then, almost everyday I checked this page if there is any statistic/update for ME. If I may ask a question, will there be any releasing announcement later?
Once again, Thank you so much!

    • Rokudaime

      Hi Tomoyo!

Right now the team is working on perfecting and fixing the patch for the Regular Edition of Tomoyo After, and so the ME patch will have to wait until later for the time being. Work on ME is still in the preliminary stages. The merger of the Doki VN translation team with Team Fluffy (the Little Busters VN translation team) was to help combine some of the toolsets each team had available, in order to speed up the translation process and make it easier for both teams. The ME editions of Key’s games use different versions of Reallive (the game engine for the VN) from the original versions. However, tools for one ME are easily adapated for use with another ME, since Fluffy has already developed a handful of tools for the ME version of LB, and is currently helping the Doki team adapt it for TAME.

Before we can begin on the translation and editing of the ME edition, we first have to decompile the game resources. That’s what we’re working on right now.

      TL;DR:
Tomoyo After ME is still in preliminary hack/decompile stages, and the rest of the team is still working on TA proper.

      • Tomoyo

Thank you for the enlightmen Rokudaime!

At least I know the current process of TA ME. Somehow I feel more excited. I hope someday I will be able to play the translation of ME version given by VN team.
Thank you very much for the work and effort for doing this. I am really grateful for this. I love CLANNAD forever =)

  • Doogie22788

So i was wondering what the songs were that you all had on here when it was posted that are not here now.

    • I believe I can answer this, Doogie22788.

At the release of the patch, Holo set up the songs ‘hope’ and ‘Light Colors’ to autoplay at different times. ‘hope’ is the main menu song, while ‘Light Colors’ is the OP theme. As to not irritate everyone, Holo took the music down shortly after the patch was released.

      • Doogie22788

Thank you i was just wondering what the names were cause they are both amazing songs. Props to everyone at doki!!!

  • Rodri

Hey there, I’ve just finished playing the whole Tomoyo After it’s a Wonderful Life game and let me tell you, the patch was perfect. I am very satisfied with the translations and I congreatulate all of you for your great work!:) Anyway, i wanted to know even more about the story so i managed to get a copy of the game Memorial Edition. This is the version that includes more storyline and the game “Dungeons and Takafumis”. However i realised that the patch provided does not work for this version 🙁 I have to say i was surprised because i read somewhere on this page that you were going to make a patch for the Memorial Edition. Also i believe i heard that the reason for delaying the release of the patch was the translation of the RPG game. And, as far as i know, that game is only avaiable on the Memorial Edition of the game. Is the patch for the ME going to be released some day? I can be patient, i just want to know 😀

  • Rodri

Hi again, look i’ve just noticed that one of my questions has alrready been answered. I mean i’ve just read that you will work on a patck for the ME later but there’s still something i don’t understand. Does the H-limited edition verison includes the RPG game? Because as i told you i’ve allready finished the game with the correct ending and i cannot play the RPG GAME. iN THE “Extras” seccion i can only see “galery” “music” and “scenes”. I cannot understand why.

    • Kuranado

I believe to play Dungeons & Takafumis for the very first time is to play the game at 20 July. There, you will get an option to play this game.
However, you can load Dungeons & Takafumis from tittle screen later if you save the game.

I hope this will help you.

    • Rokudaime

      Hi Rodri!

I take it you noticed my post a bit further up above us then. 😉 Anyway, the regular edition (as opposed to the ME) of Tomoyo After, that has the H-scenes, also has the Dungeons and Takafumis RPG minigame, just like the ME. It is not a ME exclusive. 😉

    Is anyone else apart from me receiving a problem like this;
    http://i47.tinypic.com/2s8obbb.png
I’ve re-downloaded the patch twice now, though I’ve only tried the torrent download, does anyone know if it’s just me or what?

  • Random

I got it from the torrent on this website

    • Rokudaime

Okay, Delwack says he’s going to look into it, and see if the torrent and/or installer is corrupted, but right now he’s at work. Hang in there for a bit, and we’ll hopefully get this sorted out. : ) I’ll get back to you.

      • Rokudaime

Right. Delwack tells me he checked the CRC on the torrent up against another installer, and it matches, so that’s not the problem. He also tested the installer by installing it on his system once again, and it worked just fine. Most likely, something else, like a program (antivirus, firewall, windows UAC) or a setting (for example: your OS being in a different language) is not meshing well with it, and is causing the problem. The correct patch CRC should be 3097A711 btw, so if you want, you can check that up with your patch to see if it matches. If you have no idea what I’m talking about when I say CRC, just let me know and I’ll explain. : )

        • Rokudaime

          UPDATE
          A couple more things:
-If you check your CRC up against the one I just posted, and they match, then the problem is defenitely on your end. In that case, if you’re having trouble figuring it out (you should check the things I mentioned, such as if your firewall or antivirus is blocking the program, or if changing your OS language or locale helps etc), we can try and provide support, but you’ll need to tell us your exact specs and hardware configuration, and even then, it would be hard to help when we’re not able to be there and test things with you. Therefore:

-I’ll post this as a last resort if it comes to that, but you really shouldn’t try this unless your CRC checks out, and is correct, so please don’t do so unless that is the case. Installing with a corrupted installer will after all most likely just mess things up. Anyway:

There is a way to bypass that self-check your installer does (when it does a quick check to see if it has become corrupted or not, which is what is giving you that error message), and force it to skip that process, meaning you’ll execute the installer even though it’s corrupted (which, of course, again, is not recommended). To do so, you’ll need to pass /NCRC on the command line. Here’s how: Go to Start->Run, type cmd and hit Enter. A black console window should open. Drag the installer into the window, hit Space and type /NCRC. Hit Enter again and the installer should start.

Please let me know what you find out, and how things turn out for you. : ) The info might be useful in helping others solve the same problem, and could also help us to help other people.

  • Random

Sorry about the slow reply, how exactly do I check the CRC? And thank you so far for trying to help me out, it’s much appreciated

    • Rokudaime

Ah, right. Actually, the CRC is usually supposed to be included at the end of the filename of the patch file, but I guess the team forgot to include that in the name during all the excitement. Sorry about that. ^^’ Anyway, you can still easily find the CRC though. Download this program and install it (it’ll take up just a little over 200kb on your computer 🙂 ): http://rapidcrc.sourceforge.net/download.html
It’s a program that allows you to check CRCs AND MD5s, and it can also put CRC tags on the files or generate a separate list.

After installing, just open the program (you don’t need to restart your computer like it tells you to, that’s just rubbish), click “Open Files”, find the TA patch file on your computer, and select to open it (RapidCRC won’t try to run the patch, it’ll just check the file). Once you’ve done so, look at the “Results” screen of the program. The CRC should be listed there under the name of the patch file. If it reads 3097A711, then your patch is the correct one, and not corrupted. In that case the problem must lie elsewhere. That should at least make the situation clearer. : )

  • Random

I managed to get the patch working by re-downloading it and changing my locale to Japanese. Thanks for your help it was much appreciated. Time to get started it seems =P

  • FightThePowa

    Hello guys,

while i was browsing the previous posts, i saw someone asking about “dungeons and takafumis”. does anyone know what will happen after completing it 8 times?

    • Rokudaime

The part of the description on the “CLANNAD: TOMOYO AFTER ~IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE~” page of the “VISUAL NOVELS” category that says: “In order to complete the game entirely, the player must finish eight of the mini RPGs games called ‘Dungeons & Takafumis'” is incorrect. We’ll have it fixed in the future. Anyway, you do need to complete D&T in order to complete Tomoyo After completely, but as far as I (and others in the VN team that I’ve spoken to) know, there is no reward for beating it 8 times, and so there is no point in doing so.

  • Kuranado

It seems checking this page became my daily routine.
I wish there are many people still looking forward for the polished patch and ME patch.
    Tomoyo after <3

  • yah same to me waiting ME patch to be release :D, maybe it takes a years or so, well who know just wait and see

  • Kuina

Reading the comments above, I see that the original is shorter than the console port. By how much shorter is it and is a lot missing? And does the PC port have a voice patch?

    • Rokudaime

The Regular/Standard/Original/whateva PC version of the game does not have voices, but ME PC version (which has the added textual content and no H-scenes) DOES have voices.

    • Rokudaime

And it’s kind of impossible to tell you exactly how much new content is added in the ME/CS versions of the game as opposed to the regular one, but the most significant thing among those is that the ending has been altered, and that all the H-scenes have been replaced with new non-H content.

      • It’s 40% longer, son. Get it right! XD

Just pulling your leg, Roku. BTW Kuina, that 40% is calculated with the H-Scenes removed from the game, so we’re talking about 32% more unique content in the ME/CE edition as opposed to the full original edition. I hope this helps!

  • DreamerAr

i hope you release the patch for ME in christmas day or new year eve >_<

    • Rokudaime

That won’t happen. While there has been some work on the ME edition, the main work which is being done at the moment is still on TA proper. ME comes after that. So at best the TA 1.1 patch will come out this christmas, but there’s no guarantee of that either.
