Doki’s Visual Novel Department! Recruiting TLs for Tomoyo After

Tomoyo After

One of my ambitions is to expand from fansubbing Anime, and make a move into the world of Visual Novels. And after recent developments, this is no longer a dream, but a possibility.

The first project we will be working on is Tomoyo After. Doki has many translators, but all are involved in translating anime.

I am seeking one (or more) translator(s) dedicated specifically to translating Tomoyo After. You will be provided with the Japanese text to translate from. You can email me if you are interested, or go on our IRC channel and find me or Cruxis (Supreme Receptionist of the Doki VN Department).

Cruxis edit: I am also looking for a person who completed this Visual Novel and can provide me some necessary resources. Find me in #doki.

Later I will be recruiting a number of “testers” to play the patched game, for debugging purposes.

There will be no “public” release until the entire project is complete.

Edit: A small update about how we will deal with the release, which shouldn’t be too far away. The only thing we will release officially, ie, via this blog, is the patch itself. We will NOT be releasing the actual game (iso or otherwise), for obvious reasons. You will have to find a copy of the game yourself. If you idle on #doki, I am sure someone will be able to help you.

Hm, are you going to release the whole thing or just release a patch and leave it up to us to find a torrent? =P

  • You are now officially my heroes. I can’t offer translation help, unfortunately, but please do keep us updated on your progress! πŸ˜€

  • OniSamurai

Hmm, never played a Visual Novel before. Any good?

    • Rokudaime

Yes, they are well worth your time if you play the good ones. I’m a big fan of the genre myself. I’ve only played through Fate/stay night, Tsukihime, Kagetsu Tohya, Ever17, and Utawarerumono so far (all in english) myself, but I have a bunch of others lying on my harddrive that I plan to get through eventually, including Kanon and Clannad. So I’m a big fan of this move/idea. ^^

That said, Holo, you say you’re recruiting translators, but you do realize that there’s a lot of work involved in translating a visual novel that does not relate to the actual translation work itself? :-/ There’s a lot of encoding and patching work needed to actually implement the translated text into the game, and translating menus and such, and this can be quite a task depending on the game-engine used in the VN. Just look at how much trouble Velocity7 and his crew have had with translating Clannad. :-/

Also, BakaTsuki are already working on this, and are about halfway done right? It seems a bit of a waste to me to pick this up, unless you’re sure you’re going to finish before them…i know they’re still working on it too. their last activity was at the end of March.

      • Holo

Yes, Cruxis has cracked the engine and has taken care of all the non-translating stuff. The menus/gui are being translated as we speak. All that is left is the translation of the script.

        • Rokudaime

Alright, in that case, f*ing awesome! ^^ Can’t wait to play this game! I wish Key would have made a seperate game for Kyou though…she’s my favourite Clannad girl. Tomoyo comes in second. As you can probably tell, I like outgoing types. πŸ˜€

‘Kyou After: The Joy of Children’ – Amazing she was able to get that job as a kindergarten teacher after her violent outbursts and feeling up of poor Kotomi. I thought it would be impossible to get a job around kids with those tendencies…

      • I would say the way our project is managed, all of your stated problems were already thought of and covered, we’re working in a well prepared way.

  • Knillinux

    Hey guys, hey guys.

    I FUCKING LOVE YOU.

  • Clannad Man

Really, I bet this announcement spreads like wildfire. With the lackluster performance of Baka-Tsuki’s translation efforts for Tomoyo After, and no other viable translations on the net, a quality release could really expand Doki’s growing popularity. It will be quite interesting to see how much this expands the site’s userbase.

    ….Doki, i <3 you so much
i recently got into visual novels and after hearing about this, i truly wanted to play it, seems I'll get that chance ^^

  • AshenSwift

Clannad was a great Visual Novel, but Tomoyo was definitely the best girl πŸ˜‰ I was glad to hear she had her own VN, but when there was no translation patches to be found, I nearly cried. Doki, you guys are freaking AWESOME. I’ll play test if you want. ^_^ lol

  • jMa

Really like to play visual novels.

Could help with the beta test if needed just send me an e-mail. ^^

    Thanks.
    jMa.

  • waleedtg

I was just thinking today where I can download this lol

Nice to see you picking up this project πŸ˜€

  • Nymphetamine2791

OMFG. You guys just made my entire week when I read this…

    lol <3

  • Saren

    Whoa.

Where the hell did this come from?

  • Rizlim

I would love to be a “tester” but what does the “testing” include? checking English grammar? or if the script overall has a nice ongoing flow?

  • Ryo K.

d^_^b two thumbs up for doki! (sorry I don’t have more thumbs)

  • Otakus

  • StuAlex

I’ve played a few VN in the past like Ever17. Thx for the time putting in VN and anime!

  • myfistus

When the time comes that you need a good tester, give me a shout!

  • Seitsuki

    Hm, was part of the BT team a coupla years back until lack of progress and the fact it seemed like noone else was doing anything made me lose heart ^^;;

If you guys are seriously committed to this project, I’d be glad to drop in and help where I can. Almost finished the FA Kiriha route (only one more script left yay) so if you don’t mind slow progress I’ll see what I can do πŸ˜€

  • Mkl

Can’t wait for this to be completed. Good luck Doki.

  • Me

So will this work on 64 bit Windows 7? Or am I left out the fun T.T

  • CJ

I look forward to It. Has anyone got the English patched versions of Clannad, Air and Kanon Visual novels? I got a virus last time I tried doenloading them myself.

  • Overlord

Words alone cannot convey what I am feeling right now. When the previous translation attempt of this game was dropped, I felt hopeless and epty inside but, now, I can once again dream of playing this game. I do not speak japanese, but I am more than willing to test this game once you release it.

Also, she’s my waifu, don’t steal.

  • Asian_InvAsian

Maybe you can ask permission to use BT’s translations? I think they’ve already translated most of the SEEN files and would be quite a lot faster than doing it from the start.

    • Taking in someone else’s translations would also need us to check out their work, style and consistency as well as adapting to their fonts and such.

This is a Doki project, from start to end, so we will start from scratch. Have faith in us.
