Clannad (Blu Ray)

Clannad (BD)

Update: The BDMV has been put on torrent, and I am downloading right now. It will take a week or so, as it is 173 GBs lol.

Like Kanon, I will release Clannad in 3 sizes: 1080p, 720p and 480p. The plan is:
1080p: h264 + FLAC 5.1 (~1 GB)
720p: h264 + AAC 5.1 (~400 MB)
480p: XviD + MP3 2.0 (~300 MB)

Ordered chapters: None. (Download Coalgirls if you want OC)
Softsubbed karaoke. (Identical to Kanon karaoke)

@djahandarie: you’re right, i did miss that post.
As i don’t use linux myself, i didn’t really look into it, but I don’t understand the reason to not put it into the official build.

Btw, i did compare CoalGirls vs Doki version – on first glance there is no difference, but Doki has cleaner video with less artifacts – if you know where to find them. Typical places are gradients from light to dark, though there are scenes where both versions were equally bad.

In the end I’d prefer to get your version with ordered chapt instead of getting CoalGirls’ version.

    Sorry for double posting

here is a small example of how much space you can save with ordered chapters:

size of the NCOP+ED@1080p by Doki – 276MB
    276×24 = 6624.

    That’s 6,4GB.
    6GB of wasted space. literally.

  • Screwball

It doesn’t matter whether one uses Windows, Mac, or Linux. Ordered chapters “work” on all. However, it is not a seamless transition. For that reason I contend that a no-compromise release must NOT use ordered chapters.

  • Philip

I don’t mind ordered chapters if you can do it correctly. For some reason, no matter what you do, ordered chapters never seem to work the way you want it to work. To eliminate any probability of epic FAIL, forget about ordered chapters

  • martinez

i will appreciate ur work, Doki with a Clannad Project!
since i didn’t watch Clannad, i will enjoy it in HD!…
owh…and please don’t forget with a special chapter in DVD version, too….^^b

    Yay for Eclipse subs!

I am so tempted, still, to import the BD set from Japan as well. If only it weren’t $500 (after discount at that). I might break down and do it for After Story though.

The JP BDs do come with subtitles, but I prefer Eclipse’s TL so even if I bought the BDs, I’d watch your 1080p releases for the Eclipse subs.

Also, forget ordered chapters. I can run them, but pbft, 6gb extra is nothing. Just keep the ep complete, no chance of messing anything up.

    Oh also, on karaoke:

    SOFTSUBBED.

    ABSOLUTELY.

Producing a beautiful 1080p encode of this gorgeous show and then hardsubbing karaoke onto it would be a *sin*.

Karaoke is all flash, no purpose. Please just do softsubs. For everything. It’s 2010, nothing should ever be hardsubbed anymore. Karaoke is just a flashy children’s toy.

  • Will be happy as long as NC OP/ED are offered in separate files, for purposes of uncluttered watching and taking screenshots.

    1080p: FLAC
    720p: lossy audio
    480p: get a new PC
If one wants quality like 1080p they would probably go all the way desiring FLAC as well, and vice versa. Since 720p is a compromise already why step it up with FLAC?

Thanks for FLAC though.. those of us with good sound setups / audiophile headphones do appreciate it.

I have to admit, the closer you get with Kanon the more excited I get about Clannad.

I don’t care how you do it, I’m just grateful you’re doing it!

  • Soukyuu

@Screwball: never saw a non-seamless transition between ordered chapters files. Care to explain what you mean? If you have a delay while changing between ordered chapters, then it’s time to a) defrag your HDD b) check your player/splitter settings.

  • Again please don’t use ordered chapter. I don’t mind waste my HDD space for Clannad anyway.

Oh just want to ask. I just realized you also provide DDL for Kanon. So… will Clannad also get DDL? Rarely check your site. Get most of torrent link from tokyotosho (-_-).

  • Invisiblemoose

@Soukyuu: On a Samsung F1 1TB HDD (non-OS), with a Q6600@3ghz, 9800GTX, and 8GB RAM, using CCCP and CoreAVC, I’ve seen the transition stutter between chapters for 1080P encodes. Are there any specific settings that help?

Also, for what it’s worth, the 1080P release is about no compromise — a few extra gigs for non-ordered chapters is nothing. If somebody doesn’t think it’s worth the space, they can get the 720P version, which I figure can be ordered-chapters and lossy audio.

  • Perfect Chaos

So technically, the Clannad blu-ray set is officially out! =D
Now it’s a matter of waiting for the ISO……..

  • Soukyuu

I don’t know about specific settings, but i have exact the same delay with ordered chapters and non-ordered chapters on a Phenom II x4 965 4GB ram and 8600GT. Since you’re using CCCP i can only suggest getting the latest beta and test with that one (if you aren’t using it already)

  • tubefreq

@Invisiblemoose: Try increasing the input buffer size in Haali splitter. The default is 8192. I changed mine to 32768. I have no problems with the transitions of ordered chapters on my laptop (2.5 GHz MBP w/Win7 Pro x64). You might also experiment with the “merge all segments” setting.

  • nighttraveler - nt

@Soukyuu: If you’re having delays with non-ordered chapters, you’re doing it wrong.

I have an Athlon X2 @3.0Ghz and a Radeon HD4650 on W7x64 and can play ordered chapters seamlessly.

And, since CoalGirls is already doing ordered chapters I honestly don’t see the reason why Doki should too. People can choose which to download if ordered chapters are that great of a deal.

On another note, Holo please never again even think of using AC3 :P, it IS a shit codec as you’ve heard. High-bitrate AAC will suffice. FLAC is overkill.

  • Gyzome

    My advice:

1080p: FLAC + Softsub *fancy* karaoke
720p: High-bitrate AAC + Hardsub *fancy* karaoke (rest is softsub)
480p: DivX/Xvid + MP3 (for those of us who like to play it on DVD players; so all hardsubbed)

No ordered chapters, get Coalgirls’s if you like OC that much. This way, people who get the 1080p version will absolutely get the very best they can, 720p users get good stuff at light compromises and the 480p guys will have no trouble w/ their media player of choice.

I’d say that’s a pretty well balanced variety of choices ppl get.

  • osewaninaru

To those who have non-seamless ordered chapters: This may be a bug of CoreAVC, try using ffdshow (at least for testing).

Concerning FLAC: In my opinion it’s a waste of bitrate. I agree with the others that you should go for lossy audio (AAC or Vorbis are fine, just use a decent encoder like NeroAAC) – at least for the 720p version.

  • Soukyuu

@nighttraveler: i am _not_ getting any special delays with ordered chapters, they are the same as with files without ordered chapters. It’s Invisiblemoose who says he has the delays.

Also, the reason i want Doki to do ordered chapters is because their video quality is better than Coalgirls’, at least when it comes to Kanon.

But meh, since it doesn’t look like i will be able to convince anyone, i’m just going to get the version that has OC and doesn’t waste space.

Just because HDDs are dirt cheap doesn’t mean everyone can afford wasting space. I’m leeching anime because i have no money to spare in the first place.

  • Blah

To be honest, I don’t care about hard/softsubbed karaoke; either is fine. I think that 600 MB for 720p is overkill though; Frostii’s K-On BDs were ~350 MB, and Clannad seems to have as much, if not less, motion than K-On. Something around maybe 400 MB would be nice.

As for ordered chapters, I don’t really care either.

  • Holo

    Frostii’s K-On BDs prolly didn’t use FLAC.

I’ll most likely use 6Ch AAC, an ep should be around 400 MB.

  • OoP

“Epic fail. The oh so great and mighty open source OS’ community doesn’t have a program to play ordered chapters implemented by an open format? I guess the implementation is still as half-assed as FLAC’s (there is still no player which plays FLAC+embedded cue files)
Just another reason for me to not use linux.”

Not easily. Someone earlier pointed out an addition to MPlayer that you can compile on to add support, but I personally don’t think I want to screw with it at the moment.

And, when you’re dealing with a massive amounts of data like I am, Linux is definitely the OS of choice, for its vastly superior stability.

  • Screwball

    @Soukyuu:
Get Kanon episode 10 or 24 from Coalgirls. The audio is supposed to segue into the ED but not with ordered chapters. That’s what prompted someone (not me) to post on their site claiming “atomic rage”. Another with the exact same issue is To Aru Kagaku no Railgun episode 4 from Chihiro.

There is also the matter of hitting exactly the right spot when returning to the main file. With some it gets the last bit of what came before the OP or ED. And since I know you’re going to ask: I don’t recall any examples off the top of my head and quick random check didn’t find any.

  • Master Shadow

I’ll throw my vote in for the “fancy” hardsubbed karaoke. For all those who want softsub so they can watch the OP/ED w/out the subs, just release a clean OP/ED. Everyones happy.

Clannad gets the karaoke it deserves and people can still watch it w/out if they choose.

  • Frostii

    @Hologfx: Frostii’s K-On BDs used 2Ch AAC.

    Audio
    ID : 2
    Format : AAC
    Format/Info : Advanced Audio Codec
    Format version : Version 4
    Format profile : LC
    Format settings, SBR : No
    Codec ID : A_AAC
    Duration : 24mn 11s
    Channel(s) : 2 channels
    Channel positions : Front: L R
    Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
    Title : Audio (AAC LC)
    Language : Japanese

    I suggest 2Ch AAC for 720p and 5.1Ch FLAC for 1080p.
