We shall see, the guy arrested did upload a lot of our stuff. Hopefully someone jumps in to fill his place. But that may not happen for a while, due to the fear factor.
That’s a shame, that said the Japanese police seem to be really cracking down on that stuff in Japan. Where as in America/UK, anime isn’t seen as a huge deal.
I guess as anime is more embedded in Japanese society that its understandable.
I’m not an expert on the Japanese social system, but I don’t think it makes much of a difference in which country you live, if you upload tons of commercial content, even though I suppose anime is over all more valuated in Japan than it is in the States.

Authorites in the United States and the United Kingdom amongst other countries are less likely to be looking on file sharing websites for copyright infringement as anime piracy is less important to them(They are more interested in movies, music and in some ways TV shows).
Where as in Japan, I’m sure the police are ontop of this and have people looking on sharing websites for infringers, judging by the amount of people arrested for uploading manga/anime.
I personally haven’t heard of any cases on TV/Newspapers in England about someone being arrested for downloading/sharing anime/manga before.
Which is mostly my point. The only cases that would likely come to light outside of Japan would involve these licensing companies speanding money(Which most don’t have) to bring people to justice. Which is why at most websites get cease and decease orders from some shows from Funimation, but downloaders, well they’re okay.

It’s not even that unlikely that companies outside of Japan are suing people due to licensing violations e.g. the Funimation case a few month ago (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-01-25/funimation-sues-1337-bittorrent-users-over-one-piece), which is not the only public case recently. Ya, this is a policy of deterrence measure, but oh well, the upload case in Japan is too.
It’s not just about anime. I seem to hear more about Japan arresting people for pirating than I hear about America arresting people for pirating blockbusters.

The Funimation case didn’t come to anything and was thrown out by the Judge, as Funimations claim wasn’t valid, and the Judge ordered them to re submit the claim against 1337 individuals personally not as a whole.
Funimation doesn’t have the funding to sue 1337 individuals.
I don’t think anything else ‘big’ has happened since then right? They’re just sticking to sending Cease and decease scare tactic orders to websites, no one individual within the past 12 months has felt the wrath of the law in US/Europe due to downloading anime right?
Of course, no one actually gives a shit if a bunch of people download anime. However, if you are by far the biggest uploader of expensive BDs and even live in Japan it’s obviously a different story. In some way it’s like the shutdown of MU, a huge drumbeat followed by a rather long silence.

I would love to see anime sold in my area. No one seems to stock it offline, be it Morrisons, Tesco, Blockbuster etc.
Either way Japan are really cracking down on piracy in regards to anime, that said you can kinda see why, what with the amount they charge for DVDs/Blu Rays there. The cost for one disc is more than the entire series of said show when released outside of Japan lol
Example being Madoka, you can pick up for Β£20 here on DVD, I would imagine the DVDs would set someone back a few hundred pounds if imported from Japan.

Indeed. I can only assume that some people who buy these releases go without essentials like a decent quality of living to be able to afford 80 dollars a Blu Ray disc 2 episodes, or live with family and thus have no rent/bills to pay.
That said, I think it also has something to do with anime appealing to a lot of older adults in Japan too holding down decent jobs, thus they can drop the money on these releases.
Because honestly, if those prices were introduced outside of Japan to anime in general worldwide, the industry would collapse and Funimation/Section 23 etc would go broke.
I would never pay those prices, if I was born Japanese I would download my anime because its simply too expensive in Japan lol

Back then, when they sold their dvd cheap, there were one community that always bought their stuff, so they tried to increase dvd sales with cheap price. But, it didn’t work
So now they increase the price as high as they like. But it looked like japanese otaku will try to buy it no matter how ridiculous the price is.

I don’t think there was a time where Japanese anime dvds/blu rays were ever cheap though Index. I thought in some ways they’re super expensive because they need to recoup the cost of producing the show and not having to rely on American companies licensing.
I can kinda see where they’re coming from though, there’s no guarantee more people will buy a show if its 30 dollars(If the show isnt as popular).

I think the anime industry would and should still be able to run even if the consumers were to demande fairer prices. The production companies are just greedy, I don’t think thy need that much. Also, if the consumers were more picky and demanding, then the producers would have to work harder, and we would get even better anime. π
That said, no wonder Japanese otaku hate us western otaku for pirating all their anime when they (many of them anyway) pay so much money for it. π

As was stated in previous release posts:
The show airs on a satellite pay-for station called AT-X on Fridays. We do not have caps for the AT-X airing, so we just use pre-encoded 8bit raws that others upload.
The show airs on Tuesdays on a free, OTA station called Tokyo MX. We do have caps for the Tokyo MX airing, so we encode 10bit from Tokyo MX.
