You’re thinking of the verb; to “breathe” (and subsequently that it should be conjugated into “breathes”, to match the other verbs used before it, i.e “starts”, “gets”, and “changes”) but actually, what is used here is the noun “breath”. They’re very similar, but they’re actually two separate words with slightly different meanings:
