Tonari no Totoro (Blu-Ray)

Tonari no Totoro

A friend once told me, “If you don’t smile to Totoro, you’re emotionally dead inside!”. I have to agree, Totoro is easily one of the best movies Ghibli have made. A very delightful movie. Watch it. Also, the end song is epic.

Yes, I have included a 10bit and 8bit 692p for people who want HD in either profile. The 1038p version will be 10bit only.

English dub is included as 2nd track. I actually quite like the dub for this (not enough to make it the primary track mind you), Dakota Fanning and her imouto Elle actually pull it off quite nicely. The only downside is that the person doing the mum is fucking useless.

Wow! Thanks a lot! By the way, is Princess Mononoke is also made by Studio Ghibli?

  • Ghost

Good to see a oldie making a comeback. BTW, did you guys drop Jinrui?

  • Rokudaime

(TーT) Thank you! I’ve been a bit depressed lately due to some trouble at work, and the weather sucking for weeks (during my vacation…), and this cheered me up. Time to re-watch this great movie. Though I’ll wait for the 1080p. I already have it in 720p.

  • Rawr

Sorry to hear, hope things improve for you soon 🙂

  • toshin

Thank you for releasing!! Could you please include or upload the cantonese track, too???
It’s so nostalgic, I were watching this movie in cantonese when I was a kid back then.

I would be very grateful to you 🙂

  • LunarCrusade

Wow, I’m glad that you picked up this BD version
Can you release the other movies by Ghibli? (if you have time, of course)

  • Aaron

Thank you so much for making this! A while back, I was thinking “If you ever put one more Ghibli movie on here, make it Totoro!” And then i saw this and I was like O_O
I have just finished downloading the 10bit 720p one, so it should be interesting to see it in this quality. I haven’t seen this since the mid-90s, so I’m exited to see it!

  • Discotech

I still miss the old fox dubs. Look! Gollywallypods!

    ありがとうございます。

  • Rokudaime

Aww, no 1038p until next week? Darn… (,_,)

  • Marcos

I couldn’t open the file, neither in KMPlayer nor VLC . What I might have done wrong?

  • Right

    Soon?

    Late ….

  • Rokudaime

Ix, I’m just asking, but is there any chance you’ll be able to release the 1038p before the end of Monday? I’m leaving for a vacation to Rome on Tuesday, that’s why I’m wondering. kinda wanted to watch this one first. ^_^’

    • No. 32.3% atm, 40 hours to go still.

    • Rawr

Rome? Lucky, hope you have fun Rokudaime.

Was wondering why there wasn’t any posts from you here in a few days lol.

      • Rokudaime

Managed to get online at last today, after paying for an internet line at my hotel (it costs 10 Euros for a day, so I probably won’t be going online again in several days after this lol. ┐( ̄ー ̄)┌ ). Sure seems a lot has happened in the few days I’ve been gone. ; ) Anyway, Rome is beautiful and amazing, but damn, it’s so godamn hot here! Phew! (‘ ̄ー ̄) It’s like 35-40 degrees I think. I’m from the cold northern part of Norway. I’m not made for this. (‘^_^) I’m drinking several liters of water a day.

  • Thora

Thoranime released the 1038p version, and they did an immaculate job of it. Why not forgo your version and use theirs?

  • dingbat

    is audio 6ch or 2ch?

  • elmaton04

    @Thora

Go ahead and download their over bloated version. I knew Doki would release a better version which a much better compression.

  • spfleet

really nice file size for a BD release. too bad there’s no cantonese track or else i’d have gotten this one.
It’s just that it’s nostalgic for me to listen to the cantonese track when i watch this movie; thus, i prefer thora’s for that language track that i can listen to.

What’s more, i can relax my eyes off the screen a bit too. watch too much subs –> make my eyes tired ^.^

  • Rokudaime

Hmm, video in this one was excellent, but there were a few small things left untranslated in the subs, as well as a few minor mistakes. I ought to try being a QC lol. :p That said, still a great release, but I liked niizk’s old subs better. I might have to check out THORA’s version to see how they compare.

    • Minor mistakes?

      Left untranslated?

      • Rokudaime

Well…I could list them, but I’d have to watch the movie again as I don’t remember them by heart, and I just finished watching it, so I don’t wanna do that now, right away.

        • Rokudaime

Right, I watched the movie again, and wrote down stuff I noticed. Here’s what I got:
          – Satsuki uses a cutesy nickname/honorific for her friend, and calls her Micchan, but the subs say “Michiko”, even though her name is never mentioned anywhere in the movie. So how do you guys know her name is Michiko? :-/ Leaving it as Micchan would have been better I think.
          – After Satsuki shouts to Mei: “Mei! Come back!”, at 37:54, she follows up with “Hey! Mei!” (Mei-tara!) or something, but this is not subbed.
          – Consistency error: At 42:23 The teacher uses the honorific -san when addressing Satsuki, which is left out in the subs. This is fine, but then afterwards when she explains Satsuki’s situation to the class at 43:17, she uses “Satsuki-san” as well, and this time it appears as such in the subs.
          – At 49:15, Satsuki calls Mei by her name, but it is left out of the subs.
          – At 54:40, when Mei says: “With big eyes like these!”, both she and Satsuki shout “Kowai!” right after, but this is left out in the subs. Ought to be something like “It was scary!” or something like that, right?
          – At 01:03:23, Granny says “soukai” (if I’m not mistaken, it means “really?” or “I see”, depending on the context, right?) immediately before she says: “The sun blessed these, so they’re really good for you”. This is left out of the subs. I think it ought to be “Is that so? The sun blessed these, so they’re really good for you”, or something like that. Then again immediately after at 01:03:42, the same thing happens. She says “I see” before she says “At last. That’s wonderful”, but this is left out. Then finally, immediately after at 01:03:52 she says “I see” again, and this time it’s correctly translated in the subs.
          – At 01:06:32 when Satsuki says “Is there anything wrong with mom?”, she also says “what should I/we do Dad?”, but
this is left out in the subs.
          – At 01:20:50, Satsuki shouts “Mei!” in the distance, but this is left out in the subs.
          – Consistency error: Following the previous point, at 01:20:55 Mei then responds by shouting “Onee-chan!”, which is subbed as “Satsuki”, just like it has been in all instances so far in the movie when Mei adresses Satsuki, which is fine. But then immediately
after in two instances at 01:21:00 and 01:21:13, “Onee-chan” is used in the subs as well (personally I think leaving it as “Onee-chan” everywhere would have been a better choice, but that’s a matter of taste. But at least stick to one: “Satsuki” or “Onee-chan”. Not both).

That’s what I noticed. Yes, I am picky. Other than that, I think your translation is a bit too liberal rather than literal at times, but I guess that’s a matter of choice/taste. One compliment: You translated “makkuro kurosuke” to “dust bunnies”, which I think is good, and which I really liked. ; ) I remember niizk’s old release left this one untranslated.

          • Kind of wish i didn’t ask 😡

          • Rokudaime

            @Ix
You probably didn’t read my wall of text anyway. ; )

          • I did:p

I agree it is a bit to liberal in places. It’s the official English subs for the movie… We did change some stuff, as you noticed.

Honourifics… not really fussed if a couple slipped by, if you like honourifics you will catch them yourself anyway, as you did :p

I’m not really that impressed with the people who TL’d this for Ghibli. Quite a few lines are dumbed down as you noticed… They kind of Funimation’d it really. You can always alter you own copy to add in what you want though 😀

Either way, it’s still a great movie.

          • Rokudaime

Indeed it is. ; ) I’ve watched it many times. One of my favourite Ghibli movies. I like Princess Mononoke the most though. Followed by Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away. Also, I really liked Arrietty, which I did not expect since it was not made by Hayao.

Altering my copy and adding in what I want sounds nice, but I don’t know how to do that. ┐( ̄ー ̄)┌

    • Rokudaime

This release is vastly superior in terms of filesize though, but I guess THORA’s version is so big because of all the different audio tracks, which I don’t really need.

      • Anonymous

Muxing shit out is the easiest thing there is. Just download mkvtoolnix, run mmg, open the movie, check out the bloat, and mux into a new file.

        • Rokudaime

You lost me on the 4th step. I have no idea what you mean by “check out the bloat”, and I don’t know how to mux into a new file, and even if I did, I don’t know how to alter the script in the first place. Wouldn’t it also need to be timed properly anyway? I don’t know how to do that either. Easiest thing in the world…ye…sure…If it was that easy, anyone could do encoding, timing etc, now couldn’t they? Except many of us can’t, because it’s not as easy as you people who know how to do it always make it out to be. Just because you find it easy doesn’t mean others do. I haven’t got the faintest idea how to do what you’re telling me to do, especially with such a short and inadequate explanation. (‘¬_¬)

  • Rokudaime

Just found out Princess Mononoke is getting a Bluray release (no specified date though)! Please, please tell me you guys will do it when it gets here Ix! 😀 Mononoke is the best Ghibli movie ever imo. Seems to me every single Ghibli movie will have a BD release eventually, it’s just a matter of time and us waiting. Grave of the Fireflies just got a BD release recently as well ( I don’t much like that one though).

On a different note, I just watched THORA’s version of Totoro, and I have to say Doki’s version is vastly superior in terms of translation. While there are areas in Doki’s version I’m not happy with as mentioned above, THORA’s version is definitely much sloppier imo. There are a few places where I like their translation better, but those are few. And their release has grainy video, which is bad…

  • Rokudaime

Only Yesterday and Kiki’s Delivery Service are getting Blurays on the 5th of December. Any chance you guys will be doing Kiki’s Delivery Service? I really like that one.

Currently downloading From Up on Poppy Hill from THORA. I’ve missed the fact that it’s been out for a while. Can’t wait to watch it! ^^

  • Rokudaime

Where’s From Up on Poppy Hill Ixlone? The wait is killing me! 😛 I wish you had never told me about it being in the works, then I wouldn’t be anticipating it…

  • name

What have you done to animation ? ? ?
    It looks like watercolor 🙁

    • Aaron

Yes, I noticed this too, the picture is VERY low contrast, which is either the movie itself, or the restoration, I guess. It just doesn’t look like I remember it back when I saw the Fox dub on VHS many years ago, and on a 20′ 1985 Quasar, which was superb for VHS. I miss that dub, it had the best Totoro roar, lol.

  • Bluergost

Is it disney dub or fox dub.

  • Takeshi18

Can you guys do rest of ghibli movies?
