no 480p? too bad… if mine were not a notebook but a fine laptop. :'(
My 4y.o. notebook can play 720p hi10p without any problems.
it depend what notebook it is, i can ensure my notebook has the worst processor.
My Pentium 4 1.8ghz can play 720 just fine and it’s over 10 years old…
Well… consider your Pentuim 4 is lot better than my 1.6Ghz Intel Atom. :'(
Even with an Atom, you can still reencode in 480p. It doesn’t take that long (less than 1 hour per episode with x264 and veryfast) so you can make your laptop encode when you’re doing something else and then watch it.
I’ve made 720p run on at atom before, just use CoreAVC.

No. 1.6 GHz is more than enough to play 720p.
but AMD C-50 1.0 GHz, yeah. that one won’t capable to play it without flaw
But trust me i had try many way in every combinations but it seems both RAM and CPU usage still reaching maximum and making notebook itself been force shutdown. I pleased and thank everyone gave me nice idea thought but couldn’t solve my problem. :/
When was the last time you blew down the vent or cleaned out the dust?

This is how I manage to watch h.264/Hi10P on a four-year-old laptop with a 1.6GHz dual core and 768 MB of RAM using SiS 3 Mirage Graphics.
Subs disappear during heavy typesetting (E.g. Commie’s Acchi Kocchi or FFF’s 8bit Medaka Box during the PV), so I have to pause just to understand what’s being said some of the time. (This is pretty rare, though. And I think it’s ’cause I have a small amount of RAM.)
I forgot to mention:
1. I watch 720p only.
2. I have no GPU.
3. If it’s possible to lower my CPU usage even further, let me know.
4. There was another point, but I forgot what it was. But I thought I’d mention the fact there was another point.
don’t use CoreAVC. trust me.

believe me, my E5300 98% can play even 1080p flawlessly
The reason you use CoreAVC is to skip deblocking. LAV still lags on my netbook, but CoreAVC works.

Sounds like my netbook, but I had only one core.
It had an Intel Atom as well, but I was able to watch things in 720p just fine, for the most part. Just do the following:
>Download CoreAVC 3.0.1 w/serial code (hint: http://rs.4chan.org/)
>in the CoreAVC settings, set “Deblocking” to “Skip always”
>Download CCCP
>In CCCP settings, set CoreAVC as the alternative x264 decoder
>download xy-vsfilter (this helps with subtitle lag)
>drop the VSfilter.dll in the “Filters” folder in the CCCP folder and replace the other the one that came with CCCP.
>open up the CCCP settings and re-register all files (this is the easy way to register xy-vsfiler)
Ta-da~ Your toaster can now play Hi10p, and 720p for that matter.
If you can get 4GB RAM in a netbook with an atom and install a 64-bit windows and use 64-bit filters it should much better. You can get much more performance with 64-bit filters.But you shouldn’t install 64-bit windows if you don’t have at least 2GB RAM and most netbooks have only 1GB but you can still change it (less than $25 for 4GB if it’s DDR3, much more for DDR2).
If you don’t mind some glitches with the subtitles, the default vs-filter buffered subtitles don’t take that much CPU (and they work in 64-bit)

But i still think it’s somehow useless to buy 4GB RAM for netbook. In the first place, netbook isn’t for entertainment purpose.

Audio kept playing, though.
I can’t say it will run smoothly because it depends on which atom you have and it also depends on the video. You can’t expect to play smoothly high bitrate UTW’s or THORA’s releases. With over 8Mb bitrate in 8-bit (for OP/ED) i dont think it would work well on a netbook. It also depends on other encoding setting. I’ve never much tried 10-bit on my netbook because i reencode in 1024*600 on my computer before putting videos on it. The FLAC decoding may also take some processing power. Upgrading from 1GB to 2GB will always be useful but it may not be enough on all videos.
As for the RAM in my netbook, I didn’t buy memory for my netbook, I just putted the bad memory Dell put in their laptops (2*2GB 1333MHz) because I upgraded with 2*4GB@1866MHz (really useful for x264 btw). I don’t know how you can use a netbook with 1GB memory anyway because it’s really slow, you can’t have 10 websites opened at the same time and do something else at the same time. 2GB is a minimum to get a not too slow computer.
And I don’t know if you have more than 4GB on your computers, but once you have 8GB you really see the difference (you can have your ~30 websites opened, one game in fullscreen and x264 (or the two at the same time) in background tasks. (memory use would be about system 1.5GB, firefox 1.5GB, game 2GB, x264 1.5GB)
It’s really easy to use 8GB and you can hardly go back to 4GB. So buying memory is really a good idea and it’s really cheap, not like a few years ago.

To be honest, if you can’t handle playing 720… it’s time to upgrade as my phone can play 720p (tho, not 10bit as it doesn’t have a decoder for that).

I must admit that 480p 8bit will be great.
My computer can’t handle anything bigger than 480p 8bit.
And I’m don’t upgrading it because I need an older computer to test software backward compatability for my work. And now I do a stupid things like upload videos to server and reencode to 480p 8bit. And it takes about one and a half hour for each episode (Intel dual core CPU) with latest x264.exe.
And I’m use this reencoded episodes for archives, due to acceptable quality/size ratio. I can’t imagine what kind of ears you must have to notice difference between high level AAC and FLAC. Or 480p and 1920p since I watch movies from distance.
In the end – you’ll forced to buy modern computer to watch anime and a lot of CD/DVD/BD (or larger HDD) disks to store it. When I think about all this… well… that makes me a sad panda.
It’s just my IMHO, and I don’t want to be rude or something. I’m just tell how the thing goes here.
And I clearly understand that “joints with other groups don’t always follow our conventions”.
P.S. BTW, I agree with iNEET – Chihiro die for me too since they stop releasing 480p.
P.P.S. Some fansub groups do a .mp4 version of their shows, but I need softsub, because English is not my native language and I want to keep English subtitles too just in case of the bad translation in my native language.
I agree with most of what you said, and it makes sense, except one thing:
If you can’t see the difference between 480p and 1920p (it’s called 1080p, actually, but that’s beside the point), then that’s because you watch stuff on that computer of yours. Whether you watch from a distance or not, if you use a proper monitor, or as in my case, a 40″ HDTV, the difference is so massive you’ll easily see it right away.

I like my 19″ LCD monitor (4×3 aspect ratio).
Maximum resolution are 1280×1024 (1024×768 my working) – so 1080p doesn’t even fit on the screen. 😛
