Notice: About DDLs

Unless you have been living under a rock in the last two weeks, it won’t have escaped your attention that Megaupload got pwned by the Feds, and as a result, file hosting services have been falling like dominoes all over the internet. Fileserve no longer pay, and our account on there have been disabled for violation of T&C (lol). Filesonic commited suicide by stopping their sharing services. Your files can only be accessed by yourself only, now.

So anyway, I will think about how to proceed from here. For a week or so, we will not have any DDLs.

We will either have to find another file hosting service, drop a server, use ads, or increase donations (which I don’t really want to do).

  • Use UploadStation, Doki Fansubs, they pay the downloads. 😀

There’s some other way of distribution: Perfect Dark. Currently it’s mostly for the japanese content, but it seems to be anonymous and secure enough.

    • Me

Secure enough that several Japanese people have been arrested using it, at least according to some articles.

Wiki specifies 3 known cases, all of them – in Japan more than year ago.
Compare it to the multitude of cases against torrent/DDL users all over the world.
Certainly one has to take in concideration the quantuty of users in the system (and for PD it will be much less), but even then PD looks better than usual file-distributing systems =)

It appears that depositfiles.com still has a working affiliate program … for the moment. I have no idea how long it will last after reading Alexy’s link above.

how about using wupload or mediafire(not sure but might work)

  • storrm

some are switching over to http://x7.to/ thay still have a rewards program.

Holo etc, here’s one untried approach, as far as I know: A web browser based front end for xdcc transfers. On the user’s side of the screen, they come to Doki (or separate site) and identify a file they want from a list. On the other side, xdcc commands are issued and bots do their thing. No logging onto IRC required for the user, hence no blocking by ISP. And no files are kept on site, for certain reasons. It’s a new type of links system, and link providers are in a much better position legally than file holders.

That’s the concept. The question is how automated could such a thing be made to be? No one wants to manually update lists every hour, but there is no central location where updates flow down in the muck that is IRC. Perhaps leave it up to chosen fansub groups to add their listings as they post fresh meat to xdcc. (How does Cerebrate do it, by the way?)

Anyways, this seems possible to me, but I’m just an ideas person. I leave it up to any inclined and able to try.

Meanwhile, Usenet keeps working away, out of the spotlight. All we need now is a free, anime-related newsgroup server … no torrents, no ratios to maintain and no IP addresses announced to the world. 😀

  • Magnets are pretty much the same as torrents. DL is my only choice as my uni cuts of whole blocks of networks if they detect torrenting, and IRC is blocked for some reason…

Just thought I’d post the “latest” news.
    MegaUpload – Closed.
FileServe – Closing does not sell premium.
FileJungle – Deleting files. Locked in the U.S.
UploadStation – Locked in the U.S.
FileSonic – The news is arbitrary (under FBI investigation).
VideoBB – Closed! would disappear soon.
Uploaded – Banned U.S. and the FBI went after the owners who are gone.
FilePost – Deleting all material (so will leave executables, pdfs, txts)
Videoz – closed and locked in the countries affiliated with the USA.
4shared – Deleting files with copyright and waits in line at the FBI.
MediaFire – Called to testify in the next 90 days and it will open doors pro FBI
Org torrent – could vanish with everything within 30 days “he is under criminal investigation”
Network Share mIRC – awaiting the decision of the case to continue or terminate Torrent everything.
Koshiki – operating 100% Japan will not join the SOPA / PIPA.
Shienko Box – 100% working china / korea will not join the SOPA / PIPA
ShareX BR – group UOL / BOL / iG say they will join the SOPA / PIPA

Japan, China and Korea have a say NO to the FBI and that even if laws are passed in the USA will not have any value within the sovereignty of their countries!

P/S: mediafire has start deleting copyright protected files. Only left is the personal files.

  • Use ads. It’s not like it matters to anyone.

  • I don’t think that uploaded.to and wupload.com pay the downloads, but i think that they’re the best option for now.

  • Rokudaime

Lol, are all filesharing sites American or something? Aren’t there any that are situated somewhere where the FBI has no control over, that can be used? Glad I only use torrents anyway though…

    • alf

Using torrents doesn’t really matter if the subber’s primary income for the site is through affiliate programs from DDL sites

      • Rokudaime

That is true. And it does worry me. Losing a server, or being filled with adds….I’d hate to see Doki forced to go in that direction, but…what must be done must be done, if it comes to that…

        • I don’t think having ads is necessarily a bad thing. It’s not like one is forced to click on them. Even if one does click, there’s no compulsion to buy anything. Cookies and stuff can be taken care of by using Opera’s/Chrome’s porn mode.

How about Doki? Get some ads? Nearly every website I go to, I’m bombarded by OtakuShop ads anyway, so it’s no biggie, really. xD

  • Anon

Solution: don’t bother with DDLs. They’ve always seemed so antiquated. If anyone is behind a firewall that blocks torrents, try a proxy. Because there are tons that work.

  • KOKORO

wupload might be a good option or http://filejungle.com/ and than there is Depositfiles :: Uploaded :: Uploading :: Sendmyway turbobit | refile | filevelocity | filepost | unibytes rapidshare mediafire HOTFILE 4SHARED ZSHARE uploadking uploadhere Multiupload http://www.crocko.com/ http://www.filefactory.com/ http://www.zomgupload.com/ http://letitbit.net ETC… and here is some information~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_hosting_services

  • Midnightcoast

The problem with torrents is that you might get identified and served with a Copyright Infringement Notice. If I get hit with 3 of those in one year period my ISP will cut off my internet, which I really can not afford.

    • AnonJohn

Only if you’re stupid and download something that’s being watched and or have a unencrypted utorrent, yeah, but the same can happen with DDLs, so…

      • Jackstick

        How do you encrypt utorrent?

        • AnonJohn

Options > Preferences > BitTorrent > Protocol Encryption > Outgoing: Forced

          • As far as I know Protocol Encryption just makes it so your ISP can’t identify your traffic as P2P for bandwidth limitations, it doesn’t actually hide your activity/identity from people in the swarm, you are still broadcasting your IP.

It’s worth installing PeerBlock which will stop certain companies, people, governments, etc from making a connection with your computer.

          • “Enabling Protocol Encryption

Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) actively interfere with P2P activities in order to reduce their bandwidth requirements. This causes µTorrent and other file sharing download speeds to become slow. To avoid this, µTorrent and other clients have introduced an encryption protocol to prevent ISPs from identifying BitTorrent traffic.

Go to Options > Preferences > BitTorrent. Set Outgoing under Protocol Encryption to Enable, check “Allow incoming legacy connections”.

Some ISPs have extremely aggressive throttling methods and for those users it might be necessary to set outgoing to Forced; however this will greatly reduce the number of peers you can connect to. Enabled is sufficient for most users.

            Yeah, that.

        • AnonJohn

Uncheck “Allow incoming legacy connections” if you’re afraid of your ISP searching for unencrypted incoming connections.

      • kojika

Encryption may help avoid ISP traffic shaping, but it does not provide anonymity.

      • Midnightcoast

How do you know if a torrent is being “watched”?

  • nagato

DDL sites will be back soon (MU already has a placeholder domain up) once they all move their servers away from the World Police.

  • Wuntvor

    Something to think about.

MegaUpload Dangerous Secrets affect YOU, Mike Mozart JeepersMedia ACTA / PIPA / SOPA

And be sure to watch his other videos.
Come back here and tell me what you think.

My apologies to Doki Fansubs for the 50 pages of responses to this link ahead of time.

  • noctis lucis

i hope torrent sites will stay if DDL are all dead.

  • Animesetsuna

    The end of DDL

  • Our files are no longer safe on the web……
*Goes to retrieve his files from Mediafire.

That aside, any filehosts residing in the U.S is a no go then. Are there any RELIABLE ones overseas where U.S. doesn’t have influence?

  • Nae

My group moved over to Zomgupload… they’re in the Netherlands. I haven’t heard anything about them in the news, and we’re hoping that’s a good omen.

  • Kel

    Several things:

You guys are incredibly transparent about donations, the amounts received, and the costs, so I don’t think that building up a small bank to store for future needs would be seen as excessive. Increase the amount of donations requested per month from $85 to around $100, to build up a bank to store for future needs. You can also promote donating by publishing the monthly results and expenses on the front page, instead of merely the donations page. Promoting donations and full transparency might increase the monthly giving. I’ll be honest, I’ve forgotten about donating because it’s out of sight very often, and I visit this website almost every day.

In addition, you can try advertisements, but I suspect like me many here use adblockers and I don’t know if it’d help you if many of your readers use those. But it’s worth a shot.

I doubt any DDL affiliate programs will exist in the foreseeable future, so any DDL host would merely be another way to transfer the files. It seems that all of them are going nuts deleting files, so it’d be hard to keep your files on a DDL service anyway. It might be more effort than it’s worth to try using them again, at least for the foreseeable future.

tl;dr – Try for more donations by prominently displaying expenses and donators on the front page, and build up a large enough bank to ensure that things won’t get bumpy.

  • Now it will be difficult to retrieve certain old anime anymore. 🙁
    This is really crazy though.
