Notice: About DDLs

Unless you have been living under a rock in the last two weeks, it won’t have escaped your attention that Megaupload got pwned by the Feds, and as a result, file hosting services have been falling like dominoes all over the internet. Fileserve no longer pay, and our account on there have been disabled for violation of T&C (lol). Filesonic commited suicide by stopping their sharing services. Your files can only be accessed by yourself only, now.

So anyway, I will think about how to proceed from here. For a week or so, we will not have any DDLs.

We will either have to find another file hosting service, drop a server, use ads, or increase donations (which I don’t really want to do).

damn, what’ll happen if all other filehosts were all dead and also torrents, where and how we’ll be able to download? A Life without filehosts and torrents is completely… ughh, i dunno what to say..

    • Shoujo Q

They won’t be able to kill torrents. Therefore, people will still be able to get their anime via torrents.

    • Dys

If you’re saying there’s no DDL and the torrent for something is dead, learn to use XDCC in IRC.

      • Melon Bread

That is my preferred way of getting anime.

except your dl speed is slow and your ISP’s ping is very poor (just like me),IRC is seriously out of question (torrents is better by far than IRC, but worse by far than http using IDM). Not to mention, I have no idea why I couldn’t resume any IRC dl even though it’s “resume supported”. I’m no expert with IRC.

          • I get 4-6MB/s off XDCC.

          • Anon

lolwut, torrents are not ‘worse by far’ than http. I live in one of the worst countries as far as ISPs go (excluding the third world lol) and I max out my download speed with torrents; compared to most DDL sites which throttle downspeed to something pathetic like a meg a second, or even less. http is not a viable solution because the resources required all but necessitate centralization which costs a heck of a lot of money, and when you’re doing shady things, centralization is not what you want.

Torrents are as good as we’re gonna get.

As far as I know, torrents will never go down. They are perfectly legal. This is because torrents are just mediums where people share files. The torrents don’t possess the files physically. In other words, it’s like a highway, you can smuggle drugs in the highway, but you can’t fault the highway for being there.

Because of this loophole, no one has been able to shut down torrents. The best authorities can do is to track IP addresses of those who distribute and download them.

DDL sites like Megaupload are different as they actually have servers containing the files. So they can be faulted for possession and distribution of illegal materials.

      • nakhart

thanks for the info and explanation, the truth is, i don’t know that much about torrents so it’s good to know that torrents will never go down. so, torrents were like kami-sama! haha

      • kojika

Distributing copyrighted material via p2p is still illegal, and torrent sites have been targeted for ‘facilitating’ such activity. Thankfully, however, most of the attention has been focussed on music files and Hollywood films.

In fact, there is an ongoing case in the UK where a student is facing extradition to the US for running a website that did no more than provide links to other sites … much like certain well known search engines. He hosted neither files nor torrents, yet that excuse didn’t work for him!

  • Barry

I have a huge list of alternative uploading sites, if you would like. Someone uploaded it to a forum I belong to: http://forum.nihonomaru.com/tech-heads/285846-there-more-filesharing-options-not-everything-has-been-lost.html (I suggest Mediafire) There are over 30 in the list.

  • nakhart

ahh i see, so they won’t be able to kill torrents, that’s good. alright i’ll try to learn about XDCC, but still this is a Disaster!

  • Clannad_92

Its not that i care about DDL anyway, but this marks the new world without internet freedom…starting from file hosting site, and then it will gradually eat torrent too…thought thats only the prediction, i dont want it to happen…

hope that there is solution to this…
    Long live Doki!!

I was going to suggest why not sign up to the affliate programs Amazon and other websites do where you get a percent of each sale when someone clicks through a link on the website, but I dunno if that would work as I’m unsure how they stand on anime, they say you can’t sign up if you have material that could infringe copyright or something.

I only know of that and Play-asia that offer such a service, but they give up to 10 percent of each completed sale back when someone clicks through your referal link, and it seems easy enough =/

    • You mean like adf.ly?

      sounds good

      • Me

Nope, more website posts an Amazon link on their website, people click on it, and when they buy something, you get credited with up to 10 percent of the value of the item yourself that the person has bought upon completion of the sale.

However I have no idea how they stand on fansub websites signing up, so that was more a suggestion from me lol

      • Perl

I, for one, wouldn’t have any issue with Adfly (or similar).

At least as long as it doesn’t ask me for captchas every time I click something. πŸ™

As the minister of magic once said, “These are Dark Times, there is no denying. Our world has faced no greater threat than it does today.”

I’m assuming that quite a bit of funding came from Fileserve. Unfortunately, I doubt you’ll be able to find an viable alternative any time soon. For the moment, I guess we’re stuck with either torrent of XDCC, like back in the dark ages of fan subbing.

I really don’t like the thought of seeing ads on Doki, and like the thought of you guys losing a server even less. If you guys desperately need my poor college student monies, I am willing to hand some of it over.

    • Me

Hey fistus, yup quite a bit of money came from fileserve if you see here
      http://doki.co/support/donations/

Such a huge amount that covered such a great system Doki has going with the servers and stuff, it’d be a shame to see that downsized, just if you look almost Β£70 a month came from fileserve each month for a few months :O

    • Rokudaime

“For the moment, I guess we’re stuck with either torrent of XDCC, like back in the dark ages of fan subbing”. Ummm, there are more people using torrents than there are people using filesharing sites, and it’s really not a problem to use torrents, AT ALL, unless they’re old and/or unpopular, which doesn’t matter, since many filesharing sites remove stuff that has been there for a while instead, which I DO believe is worse. Don’t speak of torrents as belonging in “the dark ages of fansubbing (it’s one word btw)”. I have always used torrents, and vastly prefer them over filesharing. The loss of funds and imposing threat of ads and a server less here, however, is a problem…

  • Tylrgamster14

I used to ddl all my anime but then torrents came into my life (lol)
but still there is some anime you can’t get with torrents since it depends on seeders. A few anime that i have i could not find an active torrent to get them and thats were dll starts. I don’t like XDCC that much but if the time comes to use it i will.

  • > http://bitshare.com/

    ohh, they still online.

Maybe you didn’t like about they changing ur filename. But maybe u consider this one :/

  • It is a sad day indeed.:( All the fileserve links for all old releases are useless. Therefore i can’t download any of the old series. (Really was hoping to get Dragon Crisis here…)
Oh well. I hope Doki will still manage to function in this new age of the internet world.
Best of luck and hope for the better. πŸ™‚
—>p.s. I think it better to just switch to another filehost since hosting your own server might be costly.

  • Meneldal

Looks like Fileserve committed suicide too. I got a nice
” FileServe can only be used to download and retrieve files that you have uploaded personally. ”
I guess we will have to use torrents for most anime now. Too bad it doesn’t work that well with the connection my college gives me. But i think we’ll see many new site that provide the same services.

  • Sword of Retribution

These are sad news for people that can’t use P2P programs (like me) due to restrictions.
I can’t either use IRC or XDCC, by the way (restrictions again).

    • time to find some torrent downloader.

    • Virtual BS

read my comment (further down) if you get desperate.

    • Meneldal

A good vpn can work too. When i’m at college I’m supposedly forbidden from using almost all ports (which blocks games and torrents) but with a vpn it works fine and i can ignore the limit they set up (it’s supposed to prevent you from getting more than 350kB/s). I think it’s the best way now, especially for me in France with all their (insert any bad comment here) laws about internet.

  • YUME

    i reccomend you http://cramit.in/ i think they might be a good option~

  • YUME

i recommend you http://cramit.in/ they might be a good option ~

  • Virtual BS

There are services that download torrents for you and provide you with a ddl to retrieve the files.
    For Example:
    http://torrific.com/
But it may involve quite a long wait for free users downloading large torrents.

  • ranmachua

I’m starting to fear this is the beginning of the end for anime as we know…

  • ClariNerd

I would use XDCC if it weren’t for the fact that my ISP (the college I go to) has blocked all access to rizon.

  • What about MediaFire? I use it all the time since it’s free, allows multiple downloads, with no CAPTCHA verification needed

  • Sonicfan1997

Mediafire was issued a warning by an FBI to shut down and give all their profits to the children’s society. All filesharing websites are probably at risk.

  • wuxian1001

What about Wupload or Uploadstation or Filejudge?
I prefer host server than XDCC, because XDCC has a very bad speed in my country China.

  • Elvin21

Its hard times or the time has come for hosting services… unless they can find a loophole on the law so they can continue…

  • Anon

If these sites are are saying you can only up/download your own stuff, why not make an open account. It does kind of rely on the honour system and maybe donations would need go up but I’m sure something could be done.

    • This is unlikely to work, since most of the filesharing sites can suspend your account at will, if they notice irregular usage of that account. E.g. if they suspect your account to contain illegal material. Just look at the terms and conditions.

  • LionEdlean

FBI cannot control Russia and China, so why not consider DDLs there? Then the problem would become how to understand Russian or Chinese. Japanese is similar with Chinese, maybe Chinese will be OK for you. lol~

    • a_sh

You can count Russia out, there’s similar belt-tightening now (or at least it’s going that way). Russia just joined WTO, and russian authorities have to show them they are loyal =)

      • Me

To be fair, Russia has been one of few superpowers that doesn’t bow to anyone, interesting to see how they handle this, I suspect they will stick with their own laws in regards to any russians who break the law etc. Websites hosted there should be safe from being shut down by the feds imo.

  • RickyRicardo

How do I use XDCC? It says to copy and paste on a irc client. Can someone explain this stuff to me since I only used DDL before.

    • LEJ27

You need to download an irc client such as mirc. If you want to download something from Doki you need to first connect to the rizon server. Once you are connected it will ask you for a channel so type in #doki. Once you are connected all you have to do is paste the code given to you form Doki’s site that told you to enter it into an irc client. Your irc client may block the download so just add *.mkv to the exceptions list. That I was I did to get it to work. If you don’t use mirc as your client then these steps may not work. Good luck.
