The iDOLM@STER - 07

OP updated to official lyrics.

Holo wanted me to say something, like the translators for the other two shows did. But you don’t really care what I think of this show, do you? So instead, I made him give you Hibiki on a tricycle.

For those who didn’t know: Playing each week’s Idolmaster episode backwards gives you a rough version that week’s Nichijou episode. Enjoy!

  • Omega

She’s one of the girls a like.
    Thanks!

  • endLezly

Is only for me Hibiki looks exactly like Sakura Kyoko from Madoka with different hair colour?

  • LeviathanX

  • Mayochan

That picture’s so cute gonna start watching iDOLM@STER now. Thanks Blick!

It isn’t Yayoi-chi on 4:52, it’s Yoyoi-n-chi (it stands for Yayoi no uchi), so it translates to “How is it with your family?” or something along this line…

    • Blick

I don’t know where the hell that -chi came from, because that is not how I translated it. So I am inclined to blame the editor for being a overzealous in trying to add/fix names. I shall yell at him for it.

    • massi4h

I’m just learning Japanese but I think she says Yayoi no uchi wa donna da? Which would translate to “What’s it like at your place” Just the -chi added on was unnecessary, my assumption woulda been the editor thinking they heard -chi and then adding it on or something.

      • Blick

You are correct. The line got changed at some point later in the process without double-checking with a TL. Apologies for the mistake. I will make a note to have it fixed for BD releases.

There seems to be something wrong with the file when I download it from fileserve. The website states the proper file size. However, when I click the link to download it says the file is 100MB less than what it’s supposed to be and the finished file only plays for around 15 minutes. Could you fix this?

  • tenshin

thanks again guys for a speedy release once again :).

But one translation mistake though :
もやし is Bean sprouts isn’t it?

Thank you very much for the release. Wonderful as always. The quality is incredible, especially considering how quickly you release it.

    Only one question:

In the anime (and games) Miki always speaks in third person and is her most distinctive verbal tic, together with her “na no” endings. That helps to set up her childish and carefree personality.
Then, why in the translation that is changed to first person sentences? Is there any particular reason?

    • Blick

In general, speaking in third person does not give the same impression in English as it does in Japanese. It sounds childish in Japanese, but it tends to just sound stupid in English. So our general standard is to change to first person.

      • Rokudaime

I think you should stick to the way the character speaks as a principle, in all anime. If they speak in first person, then translate in first person. If they speak in third person, translate it in third person. Otherwise, in my oppinion, something semi-important is lost in the translation. After all, even if you don’t really know japanese, anyone who’s watched anime for a considerable amount of time, like me, can clearly HEAR the character refering to themselves in third person, in which case it will irk me slightly each time I hear one thing and read another. Kinda like when fansub groups translate names in western name order even when the characters are using eastern name order (I’m looking at you gg. Stop pulling that shit! ΰ² _ΰ²  ). ‘Course it’s far from being as annoying as that, but you get my point.

        • Blick

That can only be taken to a certain extend, though, before it just starts being stupid. I’ve seen subtitles that try to leave in characters’ speech-isms, adding “-de arimasu” or something after everything they say.

Anyway, the basic point is that sometimes things have different connotations in Japanese than they do in English, so preserving them exactly actually gives English-speakers an incorrect meaning. For another example, the use of English words in Japanese sentences.

        • Third person sounds normal and is accepted in Japanese. It does not however sound normal in English, have you ever heard someone talk like that in English?

          Oh~

        • Akashic

As Blick says. Referring to yourself in the third person in Japanese does not carry the same connotations as in English.

In Japanese it’s one of those cute verbal tics, In English, as Blick said, it looks rather ridiculous. Akashic thinks that talking about himself in the third person makes him look like a retard.

There are certain precedents that we will and won’t follow with regards to how to translate verbal tics, and if we should translate them at all. You’ll find most of our translators would agree on this point.

          • Rokudaime

Alright. Now that I think about it, I guess you’re right. Thought about it while playing a visual novel just now, and indeed, it would get pretty ridicilous. So i take it back.

          • Rokudaime

A visual novel with voices. Sorry, forgot to say. Tired.

  • γͺし

At 6:50 I think Yayoi says “today is Thursday…” but the subs say Tuesday.

  • Wesley

The official lyrics are “Are you ready? I’m lady!”? That makes no sense whatsoever. Oh you Japanese people and your English.
