Yep, it’s 26 episodes (27 if you want to count the Episode 0 OVA). KyoAni has announced 13 BDs for the series, with two episodes plus a short bonus episode on each disc. Rest assured, there is PLENTY of Nichijou still to come!
“Natsu” was written in katakana, “ナツ”. Since Natsu (summer) sounds like the [atsu] part of Atsui (Hot), and the i(い) at the end was sort of to denote that it is an adjective. So Natsui(ナツい) probably does not make any sense, but it sounds like Atsui.

Halfway point? MAL has this listed for 26 episodes, not 24. I’m not sure if that’s accurate. But that’s what it says.
