The DVDs were notoriously terrible on CLANNAD. If you’ve ever seen them, you’ll know that whether this is an upscale doesn’t matter, the point is the master doesn’t suck like that did. 🙂
Even the 480p XviD is going to look a million times better than the DVDs did. The difference between the 720p and the 1080p is going to be filesize, lossless audio (5.1 48KHz FLAC – not that AAC is in any way bad!), and the 1080p might be slightly sharper. 720p is a good balance – the 1080p is here for those of us who want the best we can get.
It’s up to you. They’ll all look better than we’ve ever seen it before…
The source was 173 GB. The 1080p batch will be 24 GB, give or take.

@tony-san: H.264 CABAC is a lot more efficient than the VC-1 or MPEG-2 used in Blu-ray. You can get very good quality using 4Mb/s for 1080p video or half of that for 720p video. That’s compared to 16+Mb/s with the Blu-ray codecs.
