So if I’m understanding it correctly, Aoba is the lead designer, but Yagami will be getting all the credit? Pretty shitty them for them to do if that’s the case.
Imagine, ay, the Persona team decided to make an entirely original game. They have a completely unheard of person with no work history doing the character designs, with Soejima acting as an advisor for the art. You can bet the ads would be pushing Soejima’s involvement as an advisor over the guy no one’s ever heard of that is doing the actual designs.
That’s basically what’s happening. They aren’t changing the credits, and any promotional material listing main staff will have Aoba as lead character design. They’re just emphasizing the involvement of famous names.
And having key visuals and promotional materials be done by someone that isn’t the lead designer is not uncommon at all.
From a marketing perspective, having the team that created a successful game being the ones behind a new game will draw in the fans of the previous game—instant fan base.
From a moral perspective, it’s a crappy thing to do.
Personally, if I were on the marketing team, I’d point out that everyone that was on the team that created the Fairies series also created the new game. And while some would look to see who the character designer was, most aren’t going to pay it as much attention.
In any case, there are times when business decisions just plain suck. “Welcome to The Real World” I guess.

I can’t help but think that this decision by the publisher would do more harm to the game than good.
