In case anyone’s interested (don’t flame me if you don’t care), according to the Oxford English Dictionary, “Maelstrom” is a originally Dutch word that is used mostly in Scandinavian languages these days, and it means the following: “A powerful whirlpool, originally (usu. Maelstrom) one in the Arctic Ocean off the west coast of Norway, which was formerly supposed to suck in and destroy all vessels within a wide radius”. Its first recorded use was in 1659.
I just found it interesting, since, for one thing, I’m Norwegian, and second, Norway still DOES have the world’s most powerful maelstrom, even today. ; ) it’s called “Saltstraumen” ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saltstraumen ) ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QifgPL–pG8 ), (literally, “Salt Current”) and is located close to where I live. It’s a popular tourist attraction. It’s not nearly as big and powerful as Verner claimed in the old days, and it does not swallow big ships. It also doesn’t create the largest whirlpools in the world by a longshot, it’s just the world’s strongest tidal wave. It does form alot of whirlpools/vortexes though, and when the current is at its strongest, those whirlpools can reach a diameter of 10 meters (33ft), and a depth of 5 meters (16ft). You won’t be coming back alive if you fall into that shit. The current has been around for approximately 3000 years.
