So, I’ve just gotten done with Guilty Crown 16, after just recently starting the series. At the moment, can we just accept this was a 12 episode series and ignore the 2nd season exists?

Now, it’s possible for this series to redeem itself (seriously), but you can’t go killing off the characters you like and leaving the ones you hate, alive. That’s just pissing off your audience.

This is quickly heading into Witch Hunter Robin territory, actually. WHR was a great series through episode 15, then completely lost the plot. This series might be doing that as well.

Now, the first 12 episodes and Shu’s development make a bit of sense. His memories might have actually been forcefully repressed by Mana, his mother or any other combination of government folks. He also progressed himself from “worthless Shinji” to “far more bland male protagonist”.

Side point: this is why you kill Mephistopheles when you first find him. This *always* happens. Anime characters really need to read their classics more. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faust Actually, umm… this might be a straight up “Faust in Japanese High School”, at least from ep 13 through 16.

Back on point, a “power corrupts” storyline is always a good place to go, really. You can do so much with it, but they’ve gotten really ham-fisted with it. Especially going so dramatic with Hare’s death.

    Which, btw, F U ANIPLEX! I want my fifth-wheel back. πŸ™

Hey, no dissing Witch Hunter Robin. It was a good show. As for Guilty Crown though, with so many people butchering it, I’m actually starting to feel depressed whenever I think about the fact that I’l watch it some day, in the distant future…

      • Still Quite Annoyed

I like WHR a lot. But that doesn’t change the fact the series had an epic 1-15 arc then simply couldn’t find its bearing after that. It didn’t really end badly, but that last story arc was kind of “from bad screen villains 101”.

If you haven’t seen Witch Hunter Robin, give it a watch though. It’s got a great soundtrack and has a supremely good first main story arc. It’s definitely a good series, just not a great one (due to the final arc).

Speaking of which, Guilty Crown is verging into .hack//Sign territory, where the visuals and audio are superb, but the story needed a whole lot of work.

  • Loki

I know some are butthurt about Hare, but come on. The title is Guilty Crown for a reason and not Whimsical Crown.I expected this to happen from the start and boy I can tell you that Aniplex didn’t disappoint. Now a bit more Yandere and self-destroying actions and we have a beautiful end of the series. As far as I’m concerned the ep1-13 are a nice chara-intro and plot-setting episodes but nothing worth all that praise. Now these last 2 ep where godtier. They rule do take the cake πŸ˜‰

    • Rokudaime

      Everybody else disagrees with you.

      • I certainly don’t. The series has been amazing so far. Especially because they’re not giving people what they want. The same thing happened with Gurren Lagann (kill off/disappear the likeable characters and leave the hateable ones), and that show ended beautifully.

I agree that Shu’s breakdown is a bit of an overreaction. Although I certainly don’t hate the fact that he was pushed to become an asshole and leave his kind, weak-willed self behind. But the catalyst fot it to happen was a bit meh execution-wise. I really liked Hare, but I feel her development into a relatable and lovable character was a bit rushed. It still made my heart ache, though.

Then again…one of the only series that has ever made me cry was Saikano and it was with the death of one of the secondary characters (won’t spoil it, but those who have watched it know who I mean: After the earthquake…bloodsoaked bandages). The second was Wolf’s Rain (again, won’t spoil. Those who watched it know: truck and ice breaking).

Also, the last frame in the episode is a promise for quite nice things to come πŸ™‚

        • Pawprint

The only reason Saikano had me anywhere close to crying was when I realized how much of my lfe I wasted watching it.

I will say, though, that it was the show that taught me what the phrase “gomen nasai” meant.

          • hahah totally! I didn’t mean to say I enjoyed Saikano. The plot repeats itself THREE TIMES through 13 episodes!

But that one scene got to me. Awesome work by the voice actors and everything about the scene was just too powerful. The rest of the show is totally “meh”.

  • Still Quite Annoyed

Actually, it was either Hare or Inori that was going to need to die in the end. Yeah, the “Guilty Crown” name gives away the fact this isn’t going to be the happiest of series.

But there’s a difference between killing off Hare (with a nice scene, really) and sending Shu into Hilter-level mode. (Between the arm bands, the ranks and the dictatorial mindset, yeah, this series Godwin’d itself) The exposition obviously is that they’re trying to drive Shu insane/into his power… oh, geez, that means Segai is actually controlling Yahiro. Well, okay, that makes a whole lot more sense. Still doesn’t mean they really knew what they were doing with the 2nd half of this series.

I think the problem is that they finally viewed this as a “end of the world” type series, so, obviously, it has to take place in a school. That’s where it got lazy and what really bugs you.

It also really bugs me I started watching this the day before 16 came out, so I was hooked in and now want to know how it ends. With only 5 episodes left, I’ll hang out until the end, but this might have been one of those series to watch on batches for. Still, having the “heroes” kill off 2 named characters in the same episode is a tad much.

Oh, for someone that mentioned Code Geass and the sister bit… the sister, in this one, wants to “marry” (read “screw”) her younger brother. Yeah, it’s not as far away from that work as some might like.

At this point, I’m hoping Shu has to sacrifice himself to “end the Virus” and Gai gets to ride off into the sunset. Or Shu develops the power of resurrection. We need some more twists. You know this series is ending on a Deus Ex Machina.

Forgot to mention, thanks for the good work, Doki! You’ve done good work on the series. It isn’t your fault the screenwriters could have used a slap upside the head.

Also, I really do wish writers when, dealing with a story like this, would do a little actual research on how people react in societal break downs. It’s a little different than they’ve shown.

Oh, and has anyone pointed out the massive plot problem of the fact you could swim to a functional part of the city? If drug gangs can make real, make-shift submarines, given a few weeks, you should be able to come up with something and smuggle people out. >_<

  • Still Quite Annoyed

If you can’t guess, this series has really irked me. Mostly because it was “so close, yet so far” type of frustration.

The undercurrent of this series is, apparently, the interplay between Power and its limits. The balance between “what needs to be done” and “what is too far”. Which goes to the entire name “Guilty Crown”, but they really ignored most of this concept for a very long time, pretty much most of the series. Now, they’re trying to shoehorn it back into being the driving force of the series. It really doesn’t work and the entire series suffers for it.

I should also point out that Shu has taken a Heel-turn. He’s probably not coming back to the good side and he’ll die for the “cause” (speculation). If they were “exploring the limits and uses of power”, Shu’s actions would have resulted in Hare’s death. Then, you’d have the realization of the damage & corruption the power has done to him. Then we could have gotten more angst and/or mass destruction scenes. If Shu was going to be redeemed in any way we could relate to. But he can’t except by deus ex machina or horri-bad plot convenience.

Oh, another speculation. They’re “pushing” part of Mana onto Inori, from a distance. That’s why she’s gone into stone-cold killer mode a few times and she’s pushing Shu that way as well. There’s hints of it, especially at the end of 16, which is probably the means by which they’ll attempt to redeem Shu. But, well, it’s not going to work well.

To finish for tonight, seriously, this has an all-time great soundtrack. Too bad the storyline couldn’t have held up.

  • Cryto

Well what can we say. Haters gonna hate.
I personally like the series. I bet there are others who also feel the same way.

    • Still Quite Annoyed

It’s not hating on the series. If you’re 16 episodes in, you’re pretty bought in. That’s kind of the issue. This anime was on a nice course for a “buy”, when available in the States, at least for me. If I was less controlled and had just bought the series, the discs might have gotten broken after that episode.

But it’s also possible that the series will be salvaged, albeit not the most cleanly. (Bringing Gai back actually makes some sense in the logic of the world, as strange as that sounds) And, on thinking about that, I just realized that Shu could progress to the ability to resurrect those killed by the Virus. Yeah, it’s probably going there. It would bring make the whole “Guilty Crown” motif into a Messiah point. Where’s Sato Dai when you need someone to actually competently handle deep philosophical content in an anime.

      • I like your “resurrect the people who died because of the virus” theory.

If it’s wishful thinking for Hare to come back, I don’t think Hare and crossbow-chick will be coming back. They didn’t exactly die of the virus. They died because their hearts were destroyed. I don’t think theere will be a way to fix that. And if there is…that’s gonna be a bit disappointing and convenient.

The only way I would accept EVERYONE coming back to life, is if Shu gets the power to resurrect people but he has to sacrifice himself in the process because it has something to do with the Power of Kings’ genome coming out of his body and that gets to restore Voids somehow.

      • Still Quite Annoyed

I don’t have a structural problem, story wise, with killing Hare. (Actually, since she had the Deus Ex Machina “Void power”, it was probably a given at that point) *SPOILERS FOR OTHER SERIES ALERT* Much like Hughes from FMA, Kamina in Gurren Lagann or the entire world in a few series, it can actually serve a very good story telling line/motivation. I don’t have a story telling problem with that, at all. They gave Hare a good send off, really.

That’s not the problem. The problem is that it went “kill off Hare”, mourn for 30s, “make Shu into Hitler”. There’s a problem with this progression. So, until the very last scene of ep 16, we’re left with exactly 1 “likeable” character, and he’s the secondary villain of the show (that being Segai). This is not where you want your show going into your final story arc. (It’s not a great way to convince people to buy DVDs/BluRays)

Still, you can read the end of ep 16 as the writers going “ah, damn! we need Gai back to save this series”. Which just makes the Messianic bits a tad funnier.

But they can save this series, they just probably won’t. How they lead up to & responded to Hare’s death trapped them badly, story telling wise. Making your protagonist drop to a level of vile below the series antagonists isn’t exactly easy to dig yourself out of. Especially when you completely botch your core narrative in the process. Which probably means we’re going to get a “they put something in the water/food” explanation for the horrible actions. It won’t really help, but they will try something. (If they’re really desperate, we’ll get Inori & Tsugumi naked while performing some purification ritual)

My thinking on the Resurrection power is a few fold. 1) Inori’s song in 12 was able to bring back people who were completely crystal. 2) Gai just got resurrected, so his “heart” being inside Mana’s void is enough to bring him back directly. 3) Hare’s Void was destroyed, she crystallized then shattered, which fits with what happened in ep 12. 4) the “Guilty Crown” concept is going to have a full effect in here somewhere, and given the whole “Power of Kings” & new messianic implications, we should get a whole Christ motif.

But, following #4 through means this will end a bit like Mawaru Penguindrum, though less happy. (Unless you count killing Shu as being as a happy aspect, which, at this point, I might enjoy)

Also, I’m really conflicted on Evil Inori. I kind of like it, but killing off the former student council president was a tad over the top. Still, Evil Inori…

        • ugh! stupid captcha bugged out on me and my whole post was deleted!!!

Anyway, in summary of what I said:

1)WTF with Evil Inori? Is it like Mana’s insanity due to the virus or is it something else?

2)They didn’t really show Arisa dead and Argo’s void being destroyed. So they may still be alive.

3)I do hate the fact that they made Shu overreact into Hitler-status. He could’ve just become less tolerant of weak, impulsive people and stayed all punchy and hateful.

Although, I think Argo said it best: he is trying to become Gai, but he is not even close to it. Something broke inside him with the whole Hare dying thing and he went overboard. Because he CAN be Gai…I mean..Gai wanted to become Shu initially. So there may still be some hope left.

          4) I hate you for pointing out the things I unconsciously decided to ignore about the show. Now I’m not liking it so much…
          (β•―Β°β–‘Β°οΌ‰β•―οΈ΅ ┻━┻

        • Pawprint

(If they’re really desperate, we’ll get Inori & Tsugumi naked while performing some purification ritual)

I am now praying that this show gets much, much worse and they fall into utter despair. Zetsubo shita!

(I will blame you personally if this doesn’t come to pass.)

        • Still Quite Annoyed

Firefox & Chrome have extensions to save your typed inputs. I finally installed them after I lost a really important 3000 word message. That hurt.

I do apologize to Pawprint, as I don’t expect that to happen, as the bath scene with Hare, Ayase & Tsugumi is probably the fanservice we’ll get in this 1/2 of the show. (Like with Arise in the shower in ep 5) But, there’s always BluRay extras, right?

          @NeoTsunami:

1: I think they’re “pushing Mana through Inori” is the best current explanation. I think their fallback plan was always to have Shu… umm… “mate” with Mana, if all else failed. Would explain the vocal changes in the last scene.

2: Maybe, but I really doubt it. Unless they had someone else die in Arisa’s place. Arugo might live, though.

3: The two problems with “Hitler-mode” are: 1) He needed to descend before Hare’s death. There’s now no clarifying story way of bringing him out without a Deus Ex Machina (which I expect) or it’s really pathetic return to his “senses”. 2) They’ve made him ideologically worse than his enemies. That’s a huge problem. If they hadn’t gone the Void Ranks route, it wouldn’t have the stench of Nazi-like genetics look. There’s also a weird lack of honesty, in the desire for power. He’s not being evil to be evil/selfish, he’s being evil to perform some “good”. That’s generally considered worse, for a lot of reasons.

4: I rarely spend this amount of analysis energy on Anime series. I like to enjoy my shows. But this one really, really bugged me. Bad.

  • GhostAutonomy

Love each and every episode. Thanks Doki for the awesome quality. πŸ˜€

  • BloodyFart

    So, main characters dying rapidly.
Is it too late to hope for an excruciatingly painful death ivolving Ayase and the cat-eared annoyance (tsugumi she was called I believe)?

God this show is such a trainwreck and it has been since the third episode.

  • Xectz

Found it more interesting watching water boil in a kettle while waiting for Doki to release the rest of the P4 eps than bearing the burden of obligatory viewing since I started this series from the beginning… *Sigh… πŸ™

Redemption may not be the answer… Perhaps an apocalyptic end would do this series greater good…
And then the creators can give birth to the end of century savior… πŸ˜‰

  • Student

Yes, thank you for providing my weekly fix. *_* Can you say glass case of emotion for the last two episodes?? I can’t wait to see how the story plays out. I’ll just save this episode for the end of the week… where I’ll either rage or cry…

    • Still Quite Annoyed

This is one of those situations where saving ep 16, if you haven’t watched it, is probably a good idea. Maybe 17 will change things, but, yeah, this one hurt a good bit.

  • Awesome work as always Doki! I hadn’t been hooked on a series for so long. You have provided an awesome addiction for me this season. THANKS!

  • Pariah

Haters gonna hate. Personally, I Love this anime. Thanks Doki! Can’t wait for the next episode!

  • Ryudake

    Kakakakaka

I love this anime. This is how kingdoms are forged mofos! Not that idealistic tree hugging crap. You’re all just democratic hippies expecting and demanding happy endings because deep down inside, you secretly wanted to believe that the good guys should always win. The perfect ending would be Shu’s enemy’s heads are mounted on spikes and humanity being purged in massive genocide camps for having useless voids. I don’t want Shu to redeem himself, he should fall further into the depths of despair until he becomes a true Void King, empty inside and out of emotion culminating in him slaying his traitorous mom(blabla misguided) and gutting Gai from groin to neck as he represents the manifestation of Shu’s conscience etcetc.

About time Hare did something useful and died like the little useless cur she was to awaken a king. FINALLY Inori and Shu can get along without the third wheel.

    • Derpar

Weren’t there two other wheels remaining…?

      Totally agree! πŸ˜€

Everything should fall into place and the thrash must be sorted… out… heh heh πŸ™‚

      A true is tyrant…! Nothing more…
Anything else is worse than an idiotic figurehead who isn’t worthy of lordship at all…

ALL HAIL this grand Kingdom…! πŸ˜‰
Where living creatures only have two choices…

      To die… Or to obey… :p

      • s'HoW

        Two other wheels… Do you mean Ayase’s wheelchair…? πŸ˜‰

        Kidding aside…
Shuu should just ruin things and leave it that way…

A cry of pain as Shuu entered this world… (go figure)

A chorus of screams as he leaves…

Yeah all other characters that were oppressed and discriminated will be screaming that this self proclaimed king should rot in the afterlife…!

    • Pawprint

      I could live with this.

    • Still Quite Annoyed

The problem is that Shu isn’t an interesting enough of a character to pull that move off. He’s never shown any desire for that type of power. It also doesn’t fit his character that’s been developed in the story. So, the narrative resolution would be non-existent. That badly screwed up of a story would cost most of the main production staff future jobs, as no one would trust them to complete a story. You can’t make a Griffith without having hinted at it.

Also, he’s been shown to be extremely powerful, but he isn’t unkillable. This is still an Anime, they’ll nuke him if he becomes too big a problem. πŸ™‚ Now, if he gains the ability to survive that, then he’ll be a problem. πŸ™‚

      • Rokudaime

        1. You have to be like the mother of all “writing long walls-of-text” people…seriously…
        2. I wish you hadn’t like, you know, spoiled the WHOLE SHOW (or everything up until episode 16 anyway) for me…I was already not looking forward to watching this show what with so many people saying it sucks, but now that I know what’s going to happen as well, I have absolutely nothing left to look forward too…thanks…

    • Rokudaime

You don’t sound quite stable dude…

  • Kepran

    Don’t watch episode 17, don’t do it.

    You have been warned.

  • KarL

    Damn, Wikipedia = spoilers.

  • S42

I’m still hopeful for this series. I think it still has the potential to be great. Shu’s struggle with being super powered may just be a step along the way to make the audience say “Geez, what a bitch” and then something cool to wrap it all up nicely can happen. I’ve heard GC is only 22 eps, so we should find out soon. Waiting for Doki’s Ep. 17 ^^

  • Doreiku

I don’t see what all the fuss is about…

  • asdf

so where is gc-17? delayed as usual…

  • Asakura

I’ve just seen Episode 18. It gets better, luckily x_x

  • Maurice

Just wanting to ask if GC episode 17 and 18 are Delayed or not. thanks for all your hard work.

  • Mr.B

Same as the others, wondering were ep17 & 18 are, Doki subs are the best (easy to read fonts, timing, language, interp etc), so thanks, and I really don’t want to have to switch a little over half way in…especially to commie or hadena (its like their story and jargon is for a slightly different series…) THX

  • Mr.B

Sorry, also thanks for keeping it 8bit, after reading all the shenanigan tech issues on the CCCP forum, (and it not being supported on WDTV), I’d like to not switch and buy a new hard drive in a year (if size matters), then start fussing over new encoding issues, not even 90% ironed out or standardized, for smoother backgrounds and gradations.

  • Halfbeerd

Love your subs, really do, must take quite some time but, as others asked, when will you be posting the next eps?

On a different note, only thing bad i have to say about this series is that it was kinda of too fast paced on the first 12 episodes, i mean everything happened too fast, with no real setting up for the plot. (that or i have been watching too many 100 eps series :P)

Keep up the good work and pleeeease give us the next eps.

  • Maurice

Really like doki fansubs the best for all there way with all the series they do. thanks for all your hard work ad please release GC 18 soon thanks.

  • Maurice

Sorry should have been epsiodes 17 and 18 soon please and keep up the very hard work and best wishes.

  • No delays

As you can see up the top, Guilty Crown is still “On Schedule”. πŸ™‚
