Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (BD) – TV Version Special ED

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu - TV Version Special ED

This should indicate the quality you can expect on season 1’s episodes. Season 2 are much much better.

Karaoke is soft-subbed and turned off by default, you know the drill by now 🙂

This comparison should show you how poor the source was, and I can only do so much to improve it. I cannot magic detail into the video that has been destroyed by KyoAni’s upscaling process from 480p.

Season 2’s quality is similar to Kanon/Clannad 1080p, so at least you can enjoy Endless Eight without eyecancer.

Doki vs Source (FOR Special ED ONLY)

It turns out that actual episode ED has different filters to the special ED filters. Basically, KyoAni were lazy and did not filter their Special ED.

Actual episode comparison:

Delicious 720p vs Doki 720p

Delicious 480p vs Doki 480p

1080p not available yet.

The episode screenshots comparison show Doki having better quality (see the background), but that is probably due to higher bitrate and so filesize.

  • Well, too bad we all know there’s never going to happen a thing like an encode with’s filters and Doki’s colourspace :/

    • Holo

I am beginning to suspect that Delicious’s ED was spiced in from elsewhere. I cropped nothing, yet their video looks even more uncropped than mine. Maybe it was a upscale from the DVD.

      • That would be God-Tier encoding, to be able to pull of something like that.

…hmmm, you should run a test, methinks. Manually upscale the DVD’s to 1080p, put it over the BD source at 50% opacity, align both images, fine-tune the opacity on both sources, run it through your encoding script.

Use a short sample from the actual episodes to achieve the best result.

P.S.: To align the images and fine-tune the opacity, you could use screencaps in Photoshop/GIMP and then use the acquired values in the .avs script.

        • Holo

I am beginning think paying this much attention to the ED is counter productive, after all, it’s how the episodes are encoded that counts lol. And if Delicious episodes are coded differently, then all this focus on the ED is kinda pointless.

  • People. The reason is simple.
After nicely asking their opinion of the reason of all of this, I found out it’s because they used another source. How simple can it get.

The ED’s in the episodes themselves were presumably remade by KyoAni in true 1080p, but the NCED (or Special ED as Holo calls it) was not.

That’s why Holo’s version still looks a lot like the crappy upscale it’ll never cease to be, and’s version looks like a decent 1080p, like the source should warrant.

I would love to know what program(s) you use for your video work. I have tried a bit of vid work but cant find anything to do a good job. Very frustrating! Maybe I should write to your direct for guidance from the pros.

I ll definitely go for Doki after seeing this comparison since quality of Doki is better than of Delicious.

Ya what will matter is comparison between the actual episodes! I’m just curious on how Doki will compare to Coalgirl at least for S1. Money is on Doki but we shall see.

Except for the flashy colors, did a bit better filtering job. Mainly, they got rid of the ringing/halos, which is the main flaw on this BD. They also did a good job on sharpening. Although they have made the lines a bit too much thin to my taste. And their is remaining aliasing here and there (for instance, on the Haruhi’s left ribbon knot, on the right of the picture).
