Clannad (Blu Ray)

Clannad (BD)

Update: The BDMV has been put on torrent, and I am downloading right now. It will take a week or so, as it is 173 GBs lol.

Like Kanon, I will release Clannad in 3 sizes: 1080p, 720p and 480p. The plan is:
1080p: h264 + FLAC 5.1 (~1 GB)
720p: h264 + AAC 5.1 (~400 MB)
480p: XviD + MP3 2.0 (~300 MB)

Ordered chapters: None. (Download Coalgirls if you want OC)
Softsubbed karaoke. (Identical to Kanon karaoke)

well even if that particular ending is different it doesnt mean they cant do ordered chapters. they just play that episode all the way through and that’ll be that, just a little bit larger filesize on 17.
not that im saying doki needs to do that, just an option. whatever you do doki, i’ll be good with it. although ordered chapters would help me with hdd space ^^

  • Heppy

oh and flac most definitely for the 1080p release please.

Why not stick with the studio 640kbit AC3 which is already on the bluray. It’s already encoded and will be fine for most in the 720p version.

    Also compatibility with 5.1 AAC/Vorbis isn’t great on stand-alone players(WDTV, Asus O!Play, etc)

In my opinion 640kbit AC3 is plenty!

  • Anon

    How about this:

    Choice 1:
    1080p ~932MB mkv+h.264+FLAC or 640kbit studio AC3 and increase video bitrate
    720p ~466MB mkv+h.264+640kbit studio AC3(direct from the disc)
    480p ~233MB avi+xvid+mp3 or mkv+h.264+AAC(should give better results than avi+xvid+mp3, guaranteed)

    Choice 2:
    1080p ~700MB mkv+h.264+640kbit studio AC3
    720p ~350MB mkv+h.264+640kbit studio AC3
    480p ~175MB mkv+h.264+AAC

Sizes sound reasonable, I bet H.264 can shine at all those target bit-rates.

    @Anon:
    Holo has said this:
Actually, on the BD there are 3 audio formats. ALL of them are lossless.

    1. PCM 5.1
    2. DTS-HDMA 5.1
    3. PCM 2.0

There is no studio AC3, but since all of them are lossless, AC3 is totally doable.

Please, please, please NO ordered chapters. I’m downloading your Kanon over Coalgirls specifically because they use ordered chapters. Coalgirls will be using ordered chapters for their Clannad release. I want mine without.

And definitely 5.1 FLAC for the 1080p.

  • makimura

Please don’t use karaoke, it’s distracting and difficult to “skim” while focusing on the anime’s artwork.
Just a translation with an easy to skim font is good.

  • Hey Holo, which audio codec do you think will give the best sound quality between AAC and AC3?

  • Oso

Great news 😀 I’ll be snatching the 720 one.

  • iya

AAC 2.0 is transparent with 192kbps -> should be used for 480p
    AC3 5.1 is a good choice for the 720p
    FLAC for the 1080p

  • Holo

I’ve been told AC3 is a shit codec.

  • You’ve been told right. Avoid it, it’s actually worse than MP3 in listening tests.

AAC is MUCH better than AC3, even on 5.1. Vorbis is equally good to AAC on 2.0, but not as efficient for 5.1 as it doesn’t do lossy channel coupling yet (I don’t think).

    My suggestion:

    480p: x264+AAC 2.0 ~192kbps (vbr)
    720p: x264+AAC 5.1 ~256kbps (vbr)
    1080p: x264+FLAC 5.1

Softsub it all. Don’t be afraid to use /k as you did with Kanon, that works just fine (and degrades gracefully).

Please do not use Ordered Chapters. This is why I got Doki over Coalgirls on Kanon (Kanon isn’t even suitable for Ordered Chapters, as there is at least one episode—end of the ‘fox’ arc—where the ED is seamlessly mixed in, which of course you did perfectly and Coalgirls hiccuped).

Good luck. I really look forward to the results!

Oh, while I’m thinking of it. Is there any chance at all of you doing the Air BD as well?

Not looked at the planned projects section?

  • Invisiblemoose

HOLY HELL — I never noticed that little menu above the banner.

I pretty much am going to die of happiness — Air is my favorite anime. And you’ve done such a gorgeous job on Kanon…

    Oh I’m so excited.

    > I’d be great if you DIDN’T use ordered chapters. Many players do not support them, and I have yet to find a player on Linux that does.

There is a thread on animesuki about ordered chapters and mentions that uau’s repo supports them. It’s quite easy to transcode such rips for smth like ipod. Besides, a lot hardware players will not support matroska anyway, so there is not much loss with ordered chapters.

  • None

    Softsubbed Karaoke.
    Ordered Chapters.

    Please.

  • Invisiblemoose

The 1080P release is about no compromise — ordered chapters shouldn’t even be in the cards.

  • Piecake

Hardsub + NCOP and NCED. Ordered Chapters.

    1080p – FLAC
    720p – 320 AAC
    480p – MP3 V0

  • ffs

sorry but ac3 isnt shit no matter what some tools say. yes its an older compression so its not as good as aac. thus you would need to use a higher bitrate for similar results. aac is the way to go for HD releases.

  • ooleksander

please, anything but not a hardsub. onegai~! and chapters will be good if it’s possible ^^

  • Soukyuu

    > ordered chapters not working in linux
Epic fail. The oh so great and mighty open source OS’ community doesn’t have a program to play ordered chapters implemented by an open format? I guess the implementation is still as half-assed as FLAC’s (there is still no player which plays FLAC+embedded cue files)
Just another reason for me to not use linux.

  • Stephan

I think FLAC costs too much filesize for the little of gain in quality it may give.
AAC prefered for all versions, 2.0 for 480p, 5.1 for the other ones

AC3 is only an option, if it’s the original from the disc.

  • hm360

Whatever you do don’t use AC3. It is utter rubbish. I would prefer to use FLAC for the 720p, but I wonder if it’s worth the increased filesize so I guess a high bitrate AAC would be fine too, providing it’s done correctly.

I loved the original’s karaoke, but I’m not as fond of it in general nowadays. I would like it better if you just left the OP/ED on their own. There would be less distraction. If you do opt for kara, my comp struggles with softsubbed despite being able to to 720p no problem. That’s my only niggle, so go for hardsubbed.

  • djahandarie

I think Soukyuu missed the post a few above his about how uau’s (a mplayer developer) repo has them. Only reason a lot of the changes haven’t made it in the main branch is internal politics, and stuff.

  • xeron

After reading the past comments going back and forth about hardsubbing vs. softsubbing and not altering the original video and purism— I have found an ultimate solution…

Don’t sub it at all. Simple… Softsub “Purists” will be happy, and the “hardsub fans” will be content at best.

If it were left up to me, I’d grab the karaoke files SS-Eclipse used and scale them to 720p/1080p… They complimented to OP/ED sequences so well, it would be a shame to lose it to softsubs.

But if we can’t come to a consensus, I say “to hell with it.”
