You have my sympathy. Thankfully the days of hitting kids with canes are gone in most countries. I’m an English teacher myself (or hopefully I will be in about a month from now anyway, once I’ve passed my exams).
I’m going back a bit and things were different in the late-60s and early-70s. Mind you, it didn’t really do us any harm, and I dare say we deserved the odd whack now and again. We still respected the masters, albeit tinged with a little fear, and soon learned not to misbehave. 😀
