Pokémon: The Origin

Chibi Devi didn’t air last week and I needed to keep myself busy somehow.

Pokémon: The Origin is a four episode OVA anime adaptation of the original Pokémon Red game. For the most part it’s very faithful to the source material and it really hit quite a few nostalgia buttons for me. This would have been out sooner but we waited until BSJ aired it as this source has fewer ads covering the video and is generally better quality than alternatives.

All four episodes aired back-to-back – so you can either choose to watch it as a single feature length film, or you can break it up an episode at a time. There is no real OP to speak of and only the last episode had an ED/credits.

There are two subtitle tracks, one liberal TL based on the game (default), one literal TL (weeaboo).

The first is faithful to the Pokémon Red we all played growing up – as that’s the only reason we did this. It uses the English localised names for the trainers, gym leaders, towns, Pokémon, moves, items and any iconic dialogue we spotted. No honorifics as the game didn’t have any. Pokémon Dollars rather than Japanese Yen.

The second is what you’re more accustomed to coming from Doki. It uses the official Japanese romanisation of trainers, gym leaders, towns, Pokémon, moves and items. It has all honorifics. Some parts are more literally translated, rather than using localised script from the game. Japanese Yen rather than Pokémon Dollars.

We had a poll of staff members working on the show and none of them wanted to watch a literal script. We’re not that happy with the literal script we created so we’ll revisit it for the BDs if we do them.

<&Termascur> “green’s blastoise ain’t got shit on my blastoise”

<&Zdm321> “Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition”

<&TheThing|mac> Hey, teg, when you actually release this, can you keep me off the credits? I don’t want ixlone to know I’ve been stalling his shit to sneak and do Pokemon instead.

“Working on this show was such a blast from the past. A short one, sadly, but one that really hit back home to a journey that started 15 years ago for some of us. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.” – Lucidity
