Continuing on the theme of genders: It’s common for girl’s names in Japan to end in ‘ko’, hence the principal says “Besides, it’s a boy…” in response to Rai-chan asking to name the pet Noriko.

It’s a trap!
Surely “Besides, that’s a girl’s name…” instead of “Besides, it’s a boy…” be a better translation, capturing the gendered names without the audience needing to necessarily know that aspect of Japanese culture?
I did play with the idea of that structure, but I thought it wasn’t as funny as “Besides, it’s a boy…”. Years of watching Chinese cartoons means I think stupid ‘in-jokes’ like that are good fun.
I see your point though, if other people voice similar gripes I’ll consider changing it for the batches.
