I hear this episode had epic TS. So epic we had two TSers working together for several hours on it all.
But anyway, this episode has a couple things that were too complicated to fit into TL notes, so I decided to write an essay explaining them completely for the newspost. (There’s a much abbreviated TL note in the subtitles, so people who don’t read the blog still get an explanation, just not a complete one.)
Now, on the origin of Ryuuguu Komachi’s name. It’s a pretty convoluted and complex reference. “Ryuuguu” is the “Palace of the Dragon King” out of the fable of Urashima Tarou. It is the home of the dragon god of the sea, Ryuujin. The name “Ryuuguu Komachi” literally means “The Beauties of the Palace of the Dragon King”. However, that is only the first part of the reference. You see, there is a Chinese character somehow relating to water in the family names of each of the Ryuuguu Komachi members: The “mi” in Futami (Ami) is the character for “sea” (which can also be read “umi”). The “Mina” in “Minase” (Iori) is the character for “water” (which can also be read “mizu”). The “ura” in “Miura” (Azusa) is the character for “bay”. As to Haruka’s later comment, the “mi” in “Amami” is also the character for “sea”, just like Futami’s “mi”.
Second, to anyone complaining that “the insert song doesn’t make sense!”: in Japanese, the song lyrics are rife with word plays, aphorisms, parodies of aphorisms, and stream of consciousness. So it’s fairly nonsensical in Japanese, and made much more so in English by numerous things that are impossible to translate.

Thanks for the explanation. One thing I have discovered, much to my chagrin, is that translating a pun is almost worthless. Sure, it can be done, but is rendered useless (and quite unfunny) by the very act of translation itself.
I learned that in my German class. It actually made me sad because I love puns. *snif* Just more distance between us and other civilizations.
Well, you need to learn the language/culture to enjoy their puns. One more incentive to learn another language.
I still appreciate the translation and explanation of stuff. A lot of it you can kind of understand if you watch enough anime and know enough Japanese history, but it’s cool when a TL or anyone on the team throws in stuff, either on screen, during the credits, or just along with the release. Better to assume people don’t know, and provide them with the info so they can understand the ep as if they did “get” it. Even if it makes an initial pun fall flat, sometimes that kind of stuff will help you get the later ones, or at least have other stuff make sense. Sometimes even in other anime.

Actually I’d rather have this than TL notes in the script itself. I’d like to see more release posts with extended TL notes/translator thoughts.
I know the song translation problem, our (Pretty Cure Splash Subs’) Translator & Head Man, Zalis, had great fun trying to TL a song of the series’ idol, which we managed together to make some sense out of (relying heavily on a thesaurus and word organisation) but it wasn’t 100% sucessful
Not all songs are so bad. This one in particular seems to have many combinations of words thrown together not so much for meaning but because they created a neat rhythm (“ototoi oide”, for one example).
