Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei – 04

Sorry for the delay, which was caused by the TLC being first wasted and then hungover.

In this episode, a fateful girl appears. How can all the girls in this show be so cute? And for those who are so inclined, this episode is aplenty with sibling love.

We also updated the ED lyrics to the official ones. Enjoy!

    Pardon my grammar.
Still – subs should explain smth that you can’t hear, so what’s the point in wasting space on screen with honorifics?
Name is more than enough, as I said – people are not deaf.

English mixed with japanese looks, oh well… silly.

    • Not exactly hard to read a few extra letters.

Honorifics add plenty of weight to a sentence, for example they can be used to impart a term of endearment, respect, or even sarcasm.

My personal opinion is that hearing an honorific and reading something else is annoying. There are plenty of Japanese words I’m totally fine with reading in subs, I don’t see why every single thing needs to be translated and expanded on. Making the subs more verbose with a crappy English localisation of a term doesn’t make for better subs. Kotatsu is a good example, the vast majority of people know what one is, why try to localise it? It is what it is.

How’d you translate and maintain the deeper meaning for Onii-chan, Onii-san, Onii-sama and Aniki and not only that but how the VA says it. Good luck.

Oh I can’t rag on this enough. I absolutely despise any type of sub/dub where they reorder names from the original spoken lines or when they replace the use of someone’s last name with their first name! Absolutely hate that shit. Royally pisses me off when I see it.

The other comment I’ll leave on this is this fail TL that a certain “official” company did: あそびにいくヨ! which literally translates to “We go to play!” or commonly refereed to as “We’ve come to play!” (could explain why, but won’t). Anyway, so, the US official release has this titled “Cat Planet Cuties!”. WTF?! How the?! I don’t even! And these are the “official” companies you are praising?

Funimation likes taking liberties because they can. As the biggest anime company in America that obviously feel they can change the title of an anime or mess with a translation because they simply can. Money talks and the Japanese studios don’t care because of $$$.

All for honorifics! It really adds to the genuinity (I don’t knw if that’s a legit word bt oh well)

Sorry for writing like a noob. What I meant was Doki does a fine job with subs. So small errors such as the ones in this episode just mar an otherwise fine release, and that just upsets me for some reason. Don’t mean to sound like a perfectionist snob, I really appreciate the hard work of this group. And a suggestion: perhaps you guys could put the subs for thoughts and musings in ITALICS? Would look quite good…

I don’t know what happened but my comment was a reply towards Clare and his/her bitching on taking away honorifics. I like honorifics so I do not understand the idiocy behind wanting to take them out.

  • Thank you, team Doki, for continuing to respect, and aiming to preserve the authenticity of, the original works.

I completely agree with keeping the honorifics. I can see how some people might not like that but many people do. In the end you can’t expect someone to do things the way you want it to be done, unless you’re paying for the service and you made an agreement with them. So basically if you don’t like something go somewhere else instead of whining. Or pay someone who is fluent in both Japanese and English to translate it just for you.
