Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu (BD) - 01-02

Haruka 01

This is the secret project that we have been working for a little while. I’ve actually started this project back when it was aired in 2008 at Cherry-NiceBoat, and it has since been transferred to Sekai-NiceBoat, Chihiro, and now Doki-Chihiro. This marks a very happy day for me and Blazewardog. For me, it is because the scripts that I have prepared for three years are now finally used. For Blaze, it is because he finally has a chance to reunite with his waifu, and able to grace her with 10-bit video, as a test run for both groups.

I would like to point out that we currently only have the first Blu-Ray disc of this series. Blaze and I will be selling “chocolates” later in order to fund money for both the second disc and T.P. Sakura volume 2.

Since this is the first 10-bit video we are releasing (and the first ordered chapter release for Doki), here is a list of software that can play it in order of usefulness:

  1. mplayer2 : Windows builds can be found here , A git repo for building it on linux is located here
  2. CCCP: Grab the most recent version on this page. Any version later than 2011-07-30 supports 10-bit.
  3. MplayerX: I hear this has it for Mac users but i have no idea where, maybe your app store for your “desktop” has it
  4. VLC : No one should want to use this but a build that should support it is located here

Edit: A v2 to fix the problem with the ED has been released.  It is currently located in the fileserve folders linked below.

Maybe i’m blind but i don’t really see difference in quality between 10 and 8 bit version.

  • Ordered Chapters aside… It’s the best that Doki won’t adopt that standard anymore, because it’s just sucks.
    It’s like what ♦Tenshi♦ said:
“1) Interoperability SUCKS big time. OCs for me have had a mixed bag of working i say 50% they don’t work for unknown reasons.
    2) The HDD space savings is insignificant for the amount of headache.
    3) If one looks around, I say 75% of the time ppl have issues with playback its due to OC.”

  • Yup… Sadly, I will have to agree with the many haters of ordered chapters that have already commented… Inconvenient, hard to manage and space saving isn’t really an issue nowadays.

Regarding the 10-bit thingy, I actually already did a complete overhaul of my video watching programs just to prepare for the inevitable 10-bit wave.

Basically, for me, I went with MPCHC + madVR and have had absolutely no problems with any form of media, new or old. If fact, after doing this overhaul, any lags that I had with certain 1080p videos completely disappeared. Not bad, highly recommended anyone give this a try.

There is an awesome guide here for anyone who is interested:

Great release, I didn’t see this release coming, Im actually happy to see this release, how will Doki be spacing the episode releases, weekly, monthly???

  • Kanade

Imma cry now. I didnt get any credit >_<

  • NJMANGA

Just viewed the entire download, you can definitely see the difference not only the obvious file size but I do see relative sharpness of the images, not much but there is a difference in 10 bit encoding I can definitely see the difference. To doki which 10bit compression software did you use, because the quality of this 10 bit compression is cleaner than other 10 bit compression tools.

  • NJMANGA

Everything looks sharper compared to the 8 bit compression I think the overall benefit is the smaller file size, but the image quality is slightly sharper when compared to the 8 bit, just wondering what 10 bit compression tool did you use because I tested other I found but nothing I was impressed with.

  • Crim

Well, I’m really glad for Blaze, finally seeing his honey in improved quality. 🙂

I think it’s to early for this format. I’m running a 64bit ubuntu disto and first i tried compiling mplayer2 from source. That wasn’t possible since there seem to be a lot of problems with the source. So i installed via ppa. I got it running now but only in x11 mode if i try to use vdpau (Hardware accelleration for nvidia cards in linux) the mplayer crashes. But without hardware acceleration it’s impossible to view 1080P content on my laptop aka 2,0ghz dual / 4gb ddr 4 ram. And my mediacenter pc which i use to watch anime runs xbmc which is not compactible with mplayer2 and even if it where without hardware accelleration it would be useless.

    Re: Ordered Chapters

Now, I know there are issues with ordered chapters, even myself have experienced it in the past but that’s because I didn’t configure Haali Media Splitter correctly.

Since I archive a lot of the animes I do download, because you have to keep both the OP and ED files in the same directory of the main video files, I know it is an extra hassle and extra step. However, because I archive them, the space saved with ordered chapters allows me to keep more anime shows on the same drive.

By the way, not everyone is going to spend an extra $50, $130, or so on for an extra hard drive. When money is tight in this economy, $50 to $130 for a hard drive can be spent for something else more important. Trust me. Also, I would not be surprised most wouldn’t know how to install it in the first place. Installing a video player software is easier than installing a hard drive for the majority of people out there.

    Re: 10-bit encoding

There is a difference between 8-bit and 10-bit and it’s been mentioned many times before. Most important are two things– lesser banding and especially smaller file size.

It is going to be the way forward, and I would not be surprised it’ll be adopted by bluray manufacturers in the future.

If you are complaining that you cannot play it then you have not updated your video player software yet. Therefore, you have no justification to complain.

If you can’t play 10-bit (Hi10p), then dpo either one of two things:
    – Update your player software and codec pack
    – OR get the 8-bit version and stop complaining!

Just be happy that Doki even bothered to do dual releases in 10- and 8-bit encodes.

Also, until 10-bit video decoding can be accelerated on GPUs (supposedly it’s difficult due to its complexity from what I read), I recommend at least 2.5 GHz CPU preferably dual or quad core. A friend with a 2.0 GHz CPU can do it as well but his are dual dual-core Xeons. So realistically, most likely a 2.0 GHz quad core should be the bare minimum and faster than 2.0 GHz if it’s dual core.

    That’s for 720p.

For 1080p, it’s doable with 2.5 GHz CPU but I would recommend something faster like closer to 3.0 GHz at best. It is more demanding on the CPU when playing back 1080p videos. I can do it on my CPU since it’s a Phenom II X4 2.5 GHz CPU, quad core but the CPU has little room to do anything else that requires the CPU’s attention. It’s at roughly 20 to 30% CPU usage during 1080p 10-bit playback. So, closer to 3.0 GHz or faster is recommended.

That should give you a general idea on what’s needed at minimum to play back 10-bit video. It’s just best to consider upgrading your computers especially if they are 3 years or older. Computer technology updates very fast every 6 months to 1 year. A computer you buy today will be mediocre in a year and outdated in two or three years. (More or less.)

So far the two players I’ve tried and worked the best is Daum’s PotPlayer with LAV filters/splitter, and Media Player Classic HC with madVR. I don’t know but I can’t get it to work in SMPlayer and I just don’t like VLC.

This is a good guide for configuring
    PotPlayer.

There’s another guide for madVR with MPC-HC from Coalgirls here: http://coalgirls.wakku.to/?page_id=4611

Regarding GPU acceleration, I believe the next version of CoreAVC will support 10-bit and is hardware accelerated. It’s supposed to be out within the month so I’ll upgrade, try some 10-bit content and let you know how it goes.

    • Bladeking

I wouldn’t go so far as to say you need over 3.0ghz.
ATM i’m running a zbox system with 2gb ddr2 ram and a 1.8Ghz dualcore. It’s running all 1080P bluerayrips total smooth. Even my smartphone which only has a 1,2ghz dualcore runs 1080P content.Give it a thought. And a bigger cpu and maybe a new video card consumes a lot of space. Recently i held a geforce 580 gtx in my hand. Man this think is HUGE! I don’t want to have a big pc tower next to my tv. Hell we are living in the year 2011 does this things have to be this huge? I think it would even run 10bit encoded files. It is all about the hardware acceleration. If that would be running and xbmc released an updated version which supports 10bit encoded files there would me no problem at all. But i think i takes just quite some time till 10bit is fully implented so i said it’s to early now. But i’m talking about linux i think a windows system indeed needs more cpu power.

    • Shi

I play 10-bit video in my laptop with 1.86GHz DualCore and 2GB DDR2 memory. 720p and 1080p both work great and I don’t see much difference between 8-bit and 10-bit regarding the CPU load, 27% with 8-bit and 30% with 10-bit using the Windows Media Player in Windows 7. But I usualy stream the videos to my PS3 using PMS.

  • Gaoushomb

10 bit works for me on windows medea player on win7. but my media player is always glitching graphics at random anyway .

im going to try to use these new codecs u suggested.

love you guys and thanks for the upload

  • Zerowalker

What settings do you guys use for 8bit and 10bit for this release for example;O?

  • Kurausuki

Well, tried the 10-bit, worked well. No lag or anything. As I get closer to the max of my 1TB external, and plan for my next External of hopefully 2-3TB in size, it’ll be nice with the reduced file sizes later on.

I don’t know if anyone mentioned it before, but on Episode 2, around 05:34-05:37 there is a bit of picture distortion for me when the scene pans up from her legs. Just a couple frames in there where it looks like the image just got eaten in the encode or something.

  • Shadowakumu

i kinda get an Virus (Trojan) detection if i try to open the mplayer2 exe~

  • Pod

Daisy: thanks for the mplayer os x extension binaries for 10bit. Works great but on my elephant gun of a computer it should work great (Corei7 2.8 ghz, 16 gigs of DDR3 1333, etc). No problems at all in watching it and it looks fine. Can we try something in higher res 1920×1080?

And thanks to Doki for being brave – this makes a hell of a lot more sense. Especially since I’ve got a 1.5 TB drive just doing nothing but storing anime.

  • NaCl

Tried it on my Macbook, only works on mplayerX that you get from the app store, got blocks all over with mplayer os x extended rev 14 and mplayer2 2.2.0.

Nice vibrant colour. No banding noticed. Never compared it with other sources though.

Have not tried mplayer-git-2011-07-29. This one seems to have an installer… pretty weird for Mac OSX. My god why are there so many versions!!?!!

    • NaCl

OK, on second watch, maybe there is still some banding.

Can’t tell if the colour are due to the codec or the show being just that colourful, long time since I have seen those episodes – never was a big fan but watched the first few.

  • NaCl

Oh ya, don’t suppose you guys could release a 10 bit version of iDOLM@STER ep 7, quite a bit of banding in some scenes there. Would make nice comparison material.

  • Kitsune

Hey ty for Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu, can you one Version by op/ed without Effects to provide? I’d really appreciate that.

  • It’s really sound sad that for BD, only 1080p is Hi10P. So 720p & 480p is h264.

  • MinaseShien

Are you guys gonna re do this? The video quality is horrible

  • (~o_o)~

Is Doki going to do second season also?

  • sandoe41

Had to download 6 codec packs to play YOUR Hi10p video, only needed current VLC to play other Hi10p videos from another site
